Please pardon me if I'm wrong but I suspect you might have missed Heather's post... I mean, speaking of charts:

Oh! Drr. Oops. That chart is a much cooler, graphically interesting version of the same data. Edward Tufte would applaud, I'm sure.

Erik is right, you have to know the last name. Call me a damn hippy as well, sporto! I like the idea of waiting to see the kid and then going hmmm...looks like a...(No, not a monkey)...Melany.

One use for tools like this is... let's say I was trying to write a song (story, play, whatever) about a bunch of high school age kids in 1965. The list of most popular names for 1950 would give me some ideas for what names those kids would have had...

Jon: Virginia/Ginger is far too long, and who has a slash in their name? Weirdo!

Once my cousin dated a girl named January, nickname Jan, I thought that was cool. My wife says we can't pick any names with more than two syllables because my last name is too long (not to mention "William" has three). Anastasia or Alexandra are cool. Anti-M's tool is easiest for finding the top names, especially so that you don't name your kid the same thing as everybody else (although the names are delayed a bit).

Snowball H. Mostess.

We have a short list on the fridge now, mostly with names that the 3 year old and 4 year old like. The elder likes "Little Einsteins," so she's rooting for June. The younger likes "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe," so she's rooting for Lucy.

If history is any judge, we'll toss the list immediately after the birth and name her whatever seems to suit her best. But it's soooo much fun to think about what to name a person. Probably the most power I'll ever have over the future of mankind.

Snowball is now on my private list. I think my wife might veto it, though.
