Logic Pro 8

Post by roymond »

So, they finally completely reworked the interface to Logicand it's got that single-window interface thing going (ala Traktion, etc.) and it's rather brilliant. I have to order online after playing around with it on Prince Street since the stores don't have the upgrade in stock :(

If you run Logic and haven't upgraded, you're insane. Do it today! It makes the whole process of templating studio set ups so easy, getting in and recording happens immediately. Making changes throughout is spontaneous, and I bet much of this is catch-up to other systems, but they really nailed it here. Plus, they got rid of the hardware key. Finally.

I am even considering going back to a 15" laptop when I upgrade (I have a 17" G4) since the single screen interface is so nice the extra screen room isn't really needed.

They slashed the price, so Logic Studio is $500 now, which is packed with lots of sounds and loops and other thingies as well. If you run something other on a Mac and you're thinking of upgrading, you might want to check it out.

No really, it sucks. Stay away!

The upgrade is like $200. Well worth it, too.

Oh yeah, it also finally has decent multiple-take management, which is something I really need to learn how to use. (I still use the Logic 6/7 approach of creating a new track mapped to the same output and muting the old track, which makes my projects very hard to manage.)

Indeed. To be sure, there are a few little bugs and such, but so far "new track with duplicate settings" and copy and paste track settings alone are worth $200.

7 also had copy-paste of track settings, though it was slightly hidden (in the CST dropdown).

One thing I wonder about it is why they bothered to include a token for free iTMS downloads of the songs that they included master tracks for, when supposedly they're the original master tracks and mix environments... you'd think they'd just expect the Logic owners to, I dunno, bounce it themselves and not be subject to DRM?

(Maybe it's so that you can get that one song without the profanities cropped out? It's funny how thorough they were in removing it, too - they didn't just crop the region, they bothered to split the regions off into separate audio segments and completely removed the word. Which means obviously it's not the real original mix environment.)

the multiple takes thing was never really an issue for me(but i can definitely see where it will make life much easier), but there were other little things like only allowing one output device (without doing some rerouting in the audio/midi setup).
