The Music Industry - What's to Come?

Post by Justin »

I've been researching and asking people around the net about the future of the record industry lately, and wanted to get more perspectives. It's obvious that with the internet and mp3s, old ways of doing things in the record industry simply won't work anymore. This has been reflected by plummeting cd sales and increases in mp3 players.

So the question:

In what direction do you see the future of the music industry going and what changes do you think artists and labels will need to make? And I'm thinking in all aspects of the industry: independent musicians, indy labels, major labels, venues, cd stores etc.

I understand this is a large question and hard to answer in a single topic. If this kind of topic interests you, I offer you to check out these discussions on my site: http://www.oursongs.org/forum/114 I'm trying to find ways to help musicians utilize the new potentials that computers and the internet have brought for us.

Maybe instead of tackling the whole question, maybe focus on a portion of it at a time.

Why do I have the image of an ant being asked what brand of shoe he'd like to be squished by?
