It seems like were seriously lacking a forum to discuss pertinent sporting matters.

Let me get the ball rolling:

USA = LOSERS!!!!

As I'm sure you all knew, all-conquering Kangaroos trounced the USA Tomahawks yesterday 36-24 in a historic one-off Rugby League Test Match at Franklin Field, Philadelphia.

Call yourselves a Superpower? Ha! Forget your nancy-boy, helmet-wearing, tight-trousered, hug-fest you call "football" - when it comes to the noble art of Rugby League, the proud boys in green and gold have dragged your entire nation to it's knees and shown you up to be nothing more than a bunch of hopeless jokes.

http://www.nrl.com.au/news.cfm?id=10277

... and just on the off-chance that there may be any New Zealanders reading:

2-NIL - losers. Call yourselves cricketers?!? There's not one of you fit to wipe Shane Warne's arse. Go home, give the sheep a rest and don't come back until you learn which way around to hold the bat.

Actually I'm watching the game right now through the magic of TiVo, and it's really disappointing to see the Australians play so poorly. I mean, y'all are World Champions, and I didn't think you could find thirteen people who even knew how to play rugby league in America. Come on. It should have been thirty-six hundred to nil. Also, Matt Peterson cut his hair, which is sad because he used to have the best hair in rugby league (worst hair: Tulsen Tollett). So, to summarize, what Generic said.

Yes, it was pretty pathetic really. I can only assume that the boys have been in party mode for the last week or so after a long season. Still, we'll take a victory over USA in whatever we can. Hell, we're still celebrating the America's Cup from 1983.

I'm surprised to see a Bostonian so up on Rugby League hairstyles! Tulsen Tollett - what an obscure name to dredge up! I can vaguely remember him as a fairly unremarkable Pom or a Kiwi maybe? who ran around with the Parramatta Eels back in the mid-90's. Don't remember his hair though

Invented at Rugby School (north of England) sometime in the nineteenth century, It's another of those games that uses an inflated pig's bladder. This time with 2 teams of fifteen crazed people, and generally very muddy.

You're talking about Union, they're talking about League.

League was invented because Union was not 'exciting' enough for television. League bears unpleasant similarities to American Football and therefore should be destroyed. Union doesn't bear any resemblance to anything but should also be destroyed.

Rugby is not my favourite sport :)

i saw a girls rugby game once. my sister's friend was playing. i think they kicked the ball a few times. the thing i remember most is that they would stick the ball on the ground and then form a big mass and push each other around for a few minutes. i had not the faintest idea what was happening. it's tough to cheer for a team when you don't know if they're doing well.

It's a scrum. Ball gets put in the middle - folks fight to get the ball back to their own team. A scrum is usually given for a minor infringement, with the awardee's team getting the adantge of putting the ball in.

Or a ruck. Un-official version of the above. Player with ball gets leaped upon. As long as the ruck doesn't collapse the ball is in play until it comes out or gets decided by the referee that it's not coming out.

Yep, I hate rugby.

Lies. All lies. The greatest sport is obvious: hockey. It has it all. You gotta have skill to play hockey. Anyone can run, not anyone can skate. You gotta be able to see through traffic, the high transition of play is like no other. No team sport moves as fast, with as much action as hockey. You gotta have heart to play hockey. Any weiner can play baseball... good god, most pitchers are fatter than Boss Hogg.... Rugby? Pluuueeaaaaazzzzzeeeee...Cricket...does this game even have any rules that make any sense at all? Football.... boring in American, worse in Canadian, down right snooze fest European style. OH!! OH!! Let's watch a nil nil English soccer game...oooohhhh.... excitement. Oh!! American Football....givin a 100%...my ass. Take another 'roid Mr. "wide" receiver...and now they got GOLF TEAMS???What??

Hockey.

Kicks ass.

Every time I've seen rugby I've thought "Wow, this looks like it would be pretty exciting if I knew what was going on". Coming from the perspective of American football, it's sort of hilarious watching rugby if you imagine it as American football gone terribly wrong, with guys running all over and kicking the ball seemingly indiscrimiately in the middle of a run, I was watching it with a friend once and he said, "Imagine you were watching guys trying to play American football who didn't really understand the game" and from that standpoint it's a laugh riot.

I find bowling, golf, surfing, and World's Strongest Man all more exciting to watch than hockey. I've heard that it's significantly better to watch live, and I enjoy playing it, but I just can't stand it on television.

Now curling, there's a sport.

From this standpoint, Aussie Rules football is just ridiculously awesome. It is like a fumble has happened and they spend the next hour trying to recover it, and also to punch players on the other team when they think nobody is looking.

I'm just an american with insomnia and a cable tv package that includes Fox Sports World; it's mostly soccer from around the world but they do show a couple of rugby games a week, in season. When the Super-12 starts they'll even have one game a week live, usually at about 3:30 AM. Depends which country they're playing in. One of the best parts is that they have local announcers, and it is groovie to listen to distinguished-sounding old men discussing the game at hand. (Especially the South Africans- their accent is swell.)

Anyway, they were showing one game a week from the NRL last season, just rebroadcasting it from Sky, and T. Tollett was one of the analysts doing pre/post game chatter. I could never decide if he was wearing a terrible toupee or his blind grandmum had combed his hair for him this morning, or both. On the other hand, if you can play league professionally, you've got to be pretty tough, so you deserve at least some respect. Look! I found a picture!

Curling???

HAve you seen that typically canadian flick, "Men with Brooms"? That oughta fullfill your curling fetish...

I've never understood curling...I've watched a couple Brier tourneys, still makes no sense... although cricket is the most confusing, foreign sport to me... anyone care to explain wtf that's all about???
