Today's my son's 8th birthday. I got him a spy kit. We have the grandfolks here and the weather is miserable. If this was snow it would intense, but it's 34 degrees instead.

QotD: Did you like spys when you were young? What was your favorite spy thing, or favorite spy?

I loved Get Smart, but I think that was a little later than when I was 8 years old.

Spy stuff! Fun! My two older boys love spy stuff. They've never seen Get Smart though. They might like it. I wonder if they'd recognize Don Adams from their Tennessee Tuxedo DVD.

We're snowed in. But the power and the internet still work, so it's not so bad. Wish I'd thought to get some beer, though.

Oooo! What's in the spy kit? Diana Rigg as Emma Peel changed my life when I was a kid, although the Avengers was already in reruns. I do enjoy the James Bond stuff, mostly, and will always love the theme.

Strong winds are blowing the half a foot+ of snow we already have all over the place. It's supposed to start turning to freezing rain, which is not good. Yet I'm sure many a fool is driving to the Patriots game today. Have fun, mo-rons. I'm just hoping that we don't lose power, but not so I miss the game.

Edit: I'm sure you're getting pounded worse than we are, Jim. Good luck keeping your electricity flowing!

Pacos' Weekend Weather Update - Back in from shoveling, it had to be 8 or more inches and the light, but wind whipped rain was just coming down. This may not be enough snow to make a certain SF!-er from Buffalo named Bill (giggle) cringe, but a pretty good storm that's not done yet. Wheee!

Good, you east coast people can have all the snow. Here in my town, which is notorious for having horrible winters, we have maybe a couple inches of snow on the ground, and it's -8 celsius, which is a piece of piss compared to what it's usually like this time of year. It's lovely weather for a face ride in leather witCHOOO.

I tried to go xmas shopping yesterday, gave up. The malls/stores/shops are so packed with mindless consumers... I think I got a bit dumber yesterday, just being in their proximity. Also, looks like my darling daughter is *not* getting a Wii this year. I'm not prepared to seek out/bribe big-box employees for information on when they get some in, so I can camp outside the store the night before. She's got a birthday in March, maybe then. Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a loss again.

Good god. We have blizzard conditions in Cleveland. This is, oddly enough, my first blizzard. Yikes. Whiteout conditions, at least five inches of snow... I was supposed to go to the library to do some research today, but I guess that plan's out the window.

QotD: I loved watching Get Smart on Nick at Nite when I was little, but I don't remember ever being into Spy stuff as a general category. Culturally, we go through phases, and I definitely missed the Spy thing. But you know, westerns were popular for a long time, Zorro was in vogue for a while, superheroes were big for a long time and are now coming back, and when I was, like, eight years old, I remember the big cultural obsession being dinosaurs. There must have been a new special every week on dinosaurs, as well as those Land Before Time movies and the Jim Henson show Dinosaurs. I think kids still think dinosaurs are cool, but they're not in the same kind of cultural vogue they were in the late 80s-early 90s.

I loved spy stuff. I think there must be something that occurs developmentally that makes kids so gaga over spy stuff circa 6-8.

Our weather is at present pretty boring, but on Thursday I leave for Utah, and then on to Chicago... so things should get more interesting!

8 inches is respectable! but you got rain on top of the snow? that'll make it heavy as heck. we just got rain. lots of rain, which is probably good (we're still not caught up from the yearly summer drought) but snow is better. i miss snow. we got one nice storm, but no time off from work to enjoy it.

spies: i have had an interest in codes for a long time (see sig) and that drove some spy interest. but my sister and i were also big fans of the show scarecrow and mrs. king. oh, and i enjoyed "spies like us" haha.

When I was about 8 or 9 I had a 007 attache case just like this one.

It had a little plastic knife in the edge of the case that you could slip out and you could booby trap the latches with caps so that they would pop if you tried to open it without doing it right.

News: I was recording one of my entries for Purple Reign, and knocked my bass lead. It bent the end, and now I get a bunch of fuzz, static noise. Gonna have to go out and get a new lead. Terrific.

The weather in Boston over the weekend was insane. Snow in the 6-10 inch bracket, followed by rain. Shoveled around 11 a.m., before the rain completely soaked the snow, turning it into 5 times the weight, at least. Water dripping off of the roof in droves, means a bit of dampness in the basement...but still nice n' dry in my music attic where I rocked the drums for a solid 3 hours after shoveling.

QotD: I was not extremely into spy movies, but I watched a whole hell of a lot of sitcoms when I was a boy. Embarassed to say I watched my fair share of Rosanne and Punky Brewster. Yep.
