"So Kind Stacey" by Hostess Mostess. What a great song. Really good lyrics, eg "Don't think a fall is over just cause you've hit the ground".

Probably the most successful lyric I've written. I had no idea at the time. The lyrics are practically meaningless---I had no coherent story in mind when I wrote it, just the notion of a best-case scenario painful breakup. I like to think she cheated just to give him an easy out. But that came after I wrote it.

Anyone else surprised when people resonate to their lyrics? I can never tell what works. I'm no poet, I guess.

And we should definitely dust off the old clarinet more often.

"Respectable Street" by XTC. Damn I love this Black Sea album. Brings back lots of memories from when it came out, too.

Hoblit was known for a while to occasionally refer to my "The Blue Signal," a while after even I'd forgotten it... something about the line "To her, it's all inconsequential" was indescribably catchy to him; I was just killing time till the next line.

And my "Bullseye Girl" made it onto more people's short-lists that week than I thought it deserved to.

What can you say, though? How can we know good music if we're the ones making it?

In other news... I'm currently digging on Rilo Kiley's latest, Under the Blacklight. Fun, catchy music; it has a sort of retro feel, like Tom Petty or Fleetwood Mac, and sounds completely effortless.

I hadn't listened to any of these bands until now, and I'm really impressed. Opeth's surprisingly versatile ... Muse isn't quite what I expected, but still really good. Stratovarius is really talented, and I really like their arrangements. Iron Maiden is just cool, and I haven't listened to Rage yet.

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Sonata Arctica - Winterheart's Guild
Sonata Arctica - Reckoning Night

Help is pretty fun to listen to. I own nearly every Genesis album now, which is quite an accomplishment. I really love Phil Collins' drumming on SEBTP ... really inspiring. Winterheart's Guild has a lot of great guitar, and some interesting folk-inspired stuff fused with the metal (not too heavily folk-influenced, but in a few of the chord progressions it's pretty obvious).

Out of my Christmas albums, I most heartily recommend Selling England By The Pound and Winterheart's Guild. I'm sure you've all listened to Help anyways.

ha, that was i believe me on bass, jim of seattle (who sort of organized it all) on all sorts of stuff, motherfunker on guitar, and roy castle like you said singing it. i love that tune. an early big collab. i might have left someone else out but i know what i mentioned is right. i wish roy castle would songfight again.

hey thanks for digging through the archives like you've been doing sam. i've missed alot of good stuff but am re-discovering thanks to you.

Real Frogs! They had a couple of good Weezer ripoff songs that they entered back in April 2002, both of which won. I wonder who they were and what happened to them?

I have been listening to this a lot, I don't really want to listen to anything else at the moment. It is very much reflected in my entry for 'They control the weather'. I discovered it through their Tiny Cities album which is also lovely.

Got me there. To be honest, I only bought Duke and We Can't Dance at pawn shops. Some of the older ones are a bit tough to find (I didn't find a copy of Selling England By The Pound until it came under the christmas tree ... Trespass was a toughie as well)

If you're the downloading type, you should go download Sonata Arctica's "White Pearl, Black Oceans" from the album Reckoning Night right now. It's amazing. Don't even second guess yourself and ask "why am I downloading Sonata Arctica??". It's worth it.

Early Queen, specifically: Sheer Heart Attack, an amazing album. I know it's cliche to say it, but they just don't make records like this anymore. "In The Lap of the Gods (Revisited)" has been stuck in my head for 4 days straight.

Oddly enough, the song "Sheer Heart Attack" (from News of the World) has also been stuck in my head.

Yeah - I'm on a bit of a prog kick, but I've been more about SA lately, and less about Genesis. Sonata's got me right now - not just because they've got prog influences ... it's really emotional music. I love it.
