Make My Ringtone

Post by jb »

I want to put a custom ringtone on my phone, and would like to invite anyone who wants to to audition for the position of "ringtone provider". Here's all you need to do:

Create a NON VBR Mp3, MIDI, or WAV file that is <1MB and < or = 20 seconds in length. Post a link to it here, email it to me if you know my address, or PM me and I'll let you know my email address. But preferably just post it here.

It doesn't need to be a new sound file, and it can just be Hoblit going "YOUR PHONE, is RINGING" a couple times in a row. If you have access to a Hoblit, that is, and can make him dance like a monkey on your leash. I hear it's a great way to lose weight, Hobs.

VBR = Variable Bit Rate. The encoding for these files adjusts the bit rate on the fly, so it can compress the song as much as possible without losing fidelity during the parts of songs that would show obvious compression artifacts at low bit rates.

So when you encode to mp3, make sure you have a constant bit rate like 160kbps or 192kbps instead of VBR.

What kind of board is that? It's got a very Korg sound to it.

Wow! You're some sort of genius ... it's a Korg X50. What sound tipped you off that it was a korg?

I tried this as my ringtone, but the first time I got a call was on the highway, and I fell asleep at the wheel and drove off a bridge taking a busload of kindergarteners with me. I'm writing this from the Afterlife right now, back from the grave to warn everybody away from Reist's literally DEADLY ringtone.

Maybe I should write a lullabye album. If that killed you, you might not want to hear my entry for 'The Last Year'.

I mean, it's cool that you went through Reist's post history to dig that up, but I assure you I did not.

What tipped me off was the string patch and the reverb. Korg has used the same string patches and reverb for the last 5 years on a huge part of their catalogue. Even the Triton has some pretty aged stuff.

For me to ID a board, I usually need to hear: Drums, strings, piano, and effects. Obviously it's not an exact science, since everyone is sampling everyone else nowadays, but the big 3 (yamaha, korg, and roland) have somewhat distinct sounds. Nord is ultra easy to spot, as is Kurtzweil.

Nothing special, just experience. Just like any experienced guitarist can tell you the pickup configuration (and maybe the exact guitar, based on that) being used on any recording.

Nahh, I just listen to his first recording with his new Korg, just moments before I read your post. But I must say, that's pretty damn impressive that you could tell by the reverb and strings.

<strike>Sorry, I believe this thread was posted while I was taking a vacation from the internet, civilization.</strike> As it turns out, I just missed this thread somehow. I was totally back by the 4th.

EDIT: <strike>crap, I'll encode it... I missed the 1 meg requirement.</strike> Encoded to (non VBR) mp3.

EDIT II: Hey thanks ya'll... I didn't realize it would go over so well. So here is <a href="http://www.breadboxstudios.net/sound/Ho ... >Hoblitone in 44100 / Stereo / .wav</a> in case somebody wants it for their phone but needs to encode it to different specs.

I think it depends on the phone. Assuming your phone has the capability to play mp3 as ring tone, you would need to get a cable that allows you to upload it via your computer to phone. Some folks have the ability to email it to their phone and save it to their ring tone gallery from there. If you can get text messages then your phone probably has an email address... usually its something like ##########@your.phone.company.com
