A new way of digging into the archives...
Instead of listening to old fight after old fight does anyone here ever download a prolific songfighter's entire catalog?
This would get the artists' songs away from comparison with all different artists, and would (when listened to chronologically), allow for examination of the growth of the artist over time.
There was discussion in the Cute Boots prefight thread about standards and quality and improvement, so it got me thinking that I'd like to take some artists who interest me and see the standards, quality, and improvement that they show/have shown.
Maybe songfight could promote an Artist of the Month, and have a thread for discussion on that one artist's catalog. It would generate interest in artistic growth and vision.
Just my thoughts.

I've done this a couple times, where there was a particular artist I didn't quite "get" and I wanted to hear their overall sound. I can't exactly say any of them became a big fave or anything, but I've done it.
If SF was going to feature something like this (they do already have by-artist pages, but that's not quite the same as TWS's suggestion of an Artist of the Month), it would be nice to include a podcast .rss file so that one could download all the artist's songs as a group.
Something of this nature could be set up offsite by an interested party, though you'd have to figure out the trick of getting around the "no deep linking" rule. But it's dom3uable (actually, I think a podcast .rss file gets you around the limitation).

I will say that I do check out the "five years ago this week" bands on the front page every time a new one is posted. I always check their whole archive.
Also, I just started one of those phpBB forums for shits and giggles. If anyone wants to be a mod and run a section showcasing SF bands each week, let me know. Of course this is only if it gets the blessing of the SF owners.
My idea on this forum is to give anyone that wants to be apart of it, run a section geared towards something of interest to them (no hardcore porn). I was thinking, it might be a good way to create more traffic to a site that would normally get very little. An off topic type site run by a community. Just an experimental thing that has probably been done eleventy thousand times before, but something I personally need to get out of my system.
I'm also looking for someone to run a local artist section to showcase and promote their sites.
Sorry for the hijack, Weakest.
.....back to you, Jane.

I have a complete copy of all of Song Fight on my hard drive and various scripts to keep said copy up-to-date and nicely tagged and stuff. I don't generally listen to an artist's catalog though... I just listen to fights when they come up, and sometimes when reviewing a fight I'll be all 'hey that song reminds me of that one Grovy Coleslaw song from 6 years ago' and listen to it.

I know a few artists who developed significantly over time. I may qualify, myself. It's kind of amazing, sometimes. Look at the Sober Irishman over the years. He was really rough around the edges when he was a newbie. Listen to his more recent work. Wow. Fluffy is another big example.
