FWIW, I can highly recommend NI's Akoustik Piano hooked up to a Roland A80.

(Although I'm more of a Bosendorfer man myself :) ).

Hm, just listened to the samples. Nice damper noise, and it sounds like the sustain pedal actually models string reverberation rather than just sustaining the notes longer. They're definitely a step up from the pianos which came with Logic Studio, at least (NI was nice enough to provide the original MIDI files so I could even do a side-by-side comparison... I wish more softsynth vendors would do that).

Also, Garritan doesn't have a sample of the pianos alone (so far as I can find on their site anyway)

Actually, I really like the sound of the NI Bechstein. Hm! I believe I shall be picking this up after all. Thanks!

the best software piano Ive heard is the free gigastudio/sampler gvi one from tascam. gigapiano??

Its awesome, the link is in the free plugins thread..

It sounds great and the price is outstanding

Gigastudio is nice but the last time I checked it was Windows-only (and that appears to still be the case).
