tonight i'm interviewing dan savage, editorial director for The Stranger, contributor to This American Life, author, and advice columnist for Savage Love, syndicated across the nation. he's giving a couple talks at my university and I'm going to interview him for my radio station's news department.

I'm supposed to be in my office, reviewing music and answering phone calls, but I'm at home. I couldn't sleep so I went to the radio station at 3 am, played both sides of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/House-Apples-Eyeb ... 7HXY">this album</a>, did my <a href="http://www.sub.uidaho.edu/kuoi/library/ ... 60">weekly top 30 chart</a>, then slept in the lobby and in my office for a few hours. the 6-9 AM DJ called in sick, and we don't have any guys working the 2-6 AM slots right now, so I was alone. I slept in the lobby for a few hours.

daily roll call: what's your most recent purchase of an LP? that is, vinyl. that is, a phonograph.

Roll Call: Working. I've got the night off, so I might get to finish off a couple more drinking songs. In other news, my show schedule for 2008 is getting stupid busy. It's got me thinking about whether I can ever say goodbye to the day job. Sure would be nice. Although I do really like my day job, too.

QotD: Oh goodness. It'd probably be 20 years ago. I bought a Picture Disc of an interview with Andy Partridge from XTC on it. I've still got it, but I never really listened to the whole thing because the recording quality was terrible.

Strangely, I was just thinking about the last vinyl I bought, and will now have to go play it for sure. It was "Nothing Exists" by Copernicus, I got it online about a year ago. One gonzo dude.

What? Kids don't rip and share vinyl? I just met with a DRM panel, including the RIAA SVP of Technology, who seems convinced that the hands of most "kids" must be severed, due to simple association with the music sharing mind set.

Mine are all in VT in some shelf in the barn, but I think my last LP was something that wasn't expected out on CD for a while, like Dizzy G and Louis Armstrong live. Certainly by 1986 I was buying CDs only, I think. That's about when CD compression got to the point of good enough for the long haul. Portable music was high on my list of must-haves, I was an early Aiwa walk-man advocate and I had one of the early portable CD players as well, so it didn't take much to give up on vinyl. I know I had Thriller on vinyl, and Synchronicity. Not sure what the most recent pop album I have on vinyl is.

Also, since the CD came out in 82, and I graduated college in 84, I may of had a certain amount of disposable income up to 84 (I worked through school and also got some social security benefits as a student because my dad was already retired...I still don't understand it). But it quickly disappeared after graduation and reality dictated I had to get a lot of mileage out of my music collection, which at that time was many many vinyl LPs and a much smaller more slowly growing CD set. So the transition hit right when funds dried out for a while.

DRC: I'm sick...but feeling a little better right now. I think if I could sleep in until noon every day, I'd not only feel better but I'd also be a happier person.

At least I ate today.

QOTD: I'd have to say Christian Death's Only Theater of Pain although I didn't buy it at age 9 the year it came out. A bunch of years later I couldn't find it on tape (and it was still before everything had gone to CD) and Wax N' Fax in Atlanta had it on vinyl. <b>EDIT: I'm downloading it in mp3 format now</b>

I am, of course, still looking for a copy of the Jimmy & Kristy McNichol album which, for some reason, was never re-released on CD... but then, at this point, I wouldn't bother buying an LP version of anything that can be had on CD...

QOTD: Oh! 40 Years Then Death by TISM. Got it off ebay about a year ago. Unfortunately its just the record in a clear plastic sleeve. I would like to get my hands on the original packaged one. The sleeve was entirely blank, and all the sides were glued shut.

drc: I think I'm coming down with the same sickness that'sb een going aroudn the office. tired, dizzy,s ore all over, slightly sore throat. i'm supposed to interview someone tomorrow but i might just have to call in sick. (fortunately there's lots ofother people interviewing him too)

I like buying LPs, because it makes me feel like I really own it. when I buy CDs I throw it on my iPod and then never look at the CD again, except to maybe lend someone or something. I like LPs because they're big and beautiful. When I went and saw Rilo Kiley last September, they had their new album on LP for $10 and on CD for the same price. However, the LP came with a free copy of the CD inside the jacket, in a paper sleeve. And it was a gatefold LP! So... anyone who bought the CD is a sucker, imo.

Phew, I know how you feel... Friday and Saturday I had an intestinal issue, and barely got out of bed or the couch all days. Sunday was a little better, I stood up a bit. I am wondering if the antibiotic I took to fix my ear infection killed off my intestinal flora and made my digestive issues worse. Anyway today I feel great. So that's good news. Get well soon, Mr. Hoblit.

I totally don't remember what was the last LP. It was some years ago. I have been digitizing some of my old rare LPs.

I have "Whipped Cream and Other Delights" on CD. And also a CD by a band called that, it's very interesting but the cover is nowhere near as nice.

Last vinyl I purchased was Men Without Hats' "Rhythm of Youth" a couple of years back. It replace the same album I had previously owned on vinyl, but forgotten to whom I had lent it.
