Here's the story: Last year a local bar asked if I could play a St. Patrick's Day show, and I said yes. I told them I knew a couple Irish songs, and I'd learn a couple more to mix in with my regular set. They agreed.

The following week an ad ran in the local paper advertising 'Four Hours of Celtic Music by Jim Tyrrell'. Umm, okay. So I learned as many traditionals as I could, but I also tried to write some drinking songs that I'd be able to pass off. I ended up with a six-song CD that sold quite well at that show and a few others. And it's generated some interest from Irish-ish pubs in the area, so this St. Patrick's Day is a busy time for me.

So anyway, I'm doing a new album. The results so far can be seen at my RPM Challenge page. My brogue is pretty bad, and my instrumentation is far from traditional. But I'm writing about drinking, so I think my demographic will be pretty forgiving (or forgetful).

Inexplicably, I managed to conceive, write and record a song for "Tomato" this morning within the span of an hour, including my children in the vocals, and hit the deadline. I have no idea how that happened.

I've uploaded artwork for both fights, just in case the FMs are itchin' to get them posted... but hopefully somebody can come up with something better for the HE/HF fight...

And just for the record, I'm not going to submit songs for any more fights until I've managed to REVIEW a couple...

I am in for Tomato, with a song that neither refers to tomatoes, nor indeed has anything to do with tomatoes whatsoever.

It was however inspired by the title "Tomato". Two pertinent facts support this:

1) Phar Lap was a New Zealand bred stayer that won the 1930 Melbourne Cup. He died under suspicious circumstances in the USA in 1932. His heart was returned to Australia and is now on display in the National Museum in Canberra. It is very large, even for a horse. To have a "heart as big as Phar Lap" is a commonly used cliche. More importantly, Phar Lap is a dead horse. "Dead horse" is rhyming slang for tomato sauce. I believe Americans call it ketchup.

2) Grosse Lisse is a common cultivar of tomato. Until I googled it 2 minutes ago - I thought it was spelt "grosse Lizzy". In the early 90s, I lived in the centre of a large city and would regularly see an obese woman, possibly homeless, who would sit in the gutter eating ice-cream out of a 4 litre tub. It was pretty gross. I don't know what her name was - but I don't see any reason why it couldn't have been Lizzy. Or Lisse.

Just wanted to mention that I didn't notice it before, but in the middle of my song you can hear my daughter get close to the microphone and tell my son that they "have to be quiet."

Not that it stopped them from shouting "Tomato!" at more or less the right places.

Well, you *did* say "pick a side" was an optional challenge, and put a slash in the middle of a title. You were kinda asking for two of those.

Seriously though... I was unsure how to abbreviate this. Would jimtyrrell_hehf.mp3 have been a better answer? Or was I to pick a side, such as jimtyrrell_he.mp3? I did give this thought, and I guess I went with the safe answer instead of the right one.

Edit: Perhaps in the prefight thread you create every week (or so), you can say:

SEND THIS: <yourname>_hehf.mp3

if that's what you want to get. I can't promise it'll clear up all the mistakes, but I promise it'll clear up mine.

half full_half empty.mp3
- no band name, no underscore between band name and title, title not abbreviated correctly

mintyhandy_t.mp3
- one word titles get spelled out in lowercase

Mr. Tomato.mp3
- no band name, no underscore between band name and title, incorrect title, title not abbreviated correctly

CapitalistYouth+HEHF.mp3
-band name contains uppercase letters, + instead of underscore between band name and song title, song title in uppercase

dyinglight_he.mp3
-the optional challenge was pick a side, so this looks right, unless the band name is not Dying Light, The Dying Light, or A Dying Light. if you still need to include the whole title even if you pick a side, then the song title would be abbreviated wrong

jimtyrell_halfemptyhalffull.mp3
- artist spelled his name wrong, title not abbreviated

caravanray_t.mp3
- one word titles get spelled out in lowercase

baker&lsares_t.mp3
- for "and" in artist names, use "+", and one word titles get spelled out in lowercase

Melvin_he.mp3
- band name has uppercase letters and again the optional challenge would lead one to abbreviate the title this way, but if you need to abbreviate the whole title, then there is an error here too

Tomato.mp3
- no artist name, no underscore between artist name and song name, song title has uppercase letter (and i'm sure that having the one word title spelled out because it was a one word title was not intentional)

PQ_half_full_off_pleasure.mp3
- uppercase letters in band name, if the band name is still PQ Band, then incorrect band name, wrong title that is not abbreviated correctly and probably spelled wrong (off?, shouldn't be of?)

that's all i can see. i think dying light has a ligitimate arguement that the submission was correct (unless, again, the band name was somehow wrong). melvin would have the same arguement if he hadn't capitalized his name.

In addition to the things TWS noted above, aren't spaces in mp3 file names considered a no-no? I see at least one of those names that includes blank spaces...
