Konnichiwa Songfighters,

I've declared this rock day at my office. The last two days I have been stuck sitting next to a horrible little twit who spends her days singing off-key to Amy Winehouse and Beyonce. It was funny at first hearing her caterwaul her way through Sinead O'Connor' "Nothing Compares 2 U" but by day 2, it was painful. Now my whole office will pay for that by having to deal with a whole day of very loud rock.

Lamb of God isn't good or anything, but they are pretty solid for pop death metal.

I'm pretty sure anything by Anal Cunt or similar bands will make everyone very upset. Or Mayhem. They all killed and ate each other.

Oh, and you need better Nine Inch Nails than the wuss-ass new shit. PLEASE PLAY SOMETHING OFF OF THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL. If you just want raw agression, Mr. Self Destruct is the way to go. Maybe even March of the Pigs. But really, if you just want disturbing, play The Becoming or Eraser. Hell, just play the whole album. It's nothing short of genius. The Fragile is really a much better album, on several levels, but it's just not as demented or aggressive. Boo.

If you want something that rocks hard and sounds good, there's Metallica, like from the sellout era, but I couldn't see someone with your lyrical sensitivity being able to even tolerate the words. That's why you should dig up The Call Of Ktulu.

Rage Against the Machine is the best and angriest band ever. Spin them, for the sake of radical leftists everywhere.

AND PLEASE, BY GOD. RED, BY KING CRIMSON. THERE'S NOT A POWER CHORD IN THE WHOLE THING, BUT IT'S THE HEAVIEST SONG EVER RECORDED...or if you have their more recent catalog, try Level Five or Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part IV.

I could go on...it's a real shame bad I don't have any of my own heavy music to plug. What have I been doing all this time? Actually, I've got some work done on a pretty violent instrumental for FAWM, but it doesn't have all the instruments recorded. Meh...have fun with rock day!

I've been enjoying the newer stuff from Gary Numan (he of 80's "Cars" fame)... his new stuff is more industrial in its sound. But definitely with guitars.
Oh, "Red" should be played, yeah! It's not new, but who cares.

Rage is a great band to listen to. I recommend Take The Power Back off their self-titled album. Wooden Pints by Korpiklaani is pretty awesome, as is Midnight Sunrise by Turisas. You could also try Guardians of Fate by Ensiferum.

qotd: I have never been in an office environment which tolerates either behavior, the exception being when I worked as a contractor for this one complete asshole who instilled his musical whims on everyone. The only time we didn't have to put up with his butt-rock was when his best friend came around and blasted heavy metal instead. Thankfully I didn't work there long.

At my current workplace we all just wear headphones. Some of us also have electric guitars in our cubes. Lately I've been noodling around on my typing breaks and since I have GarageBand on my work computer I've been collecting little snippets which might become songs eventually.

drc: We got our milestone build done, and now we're just running it randomly to 'test' it while our build engineer packages it up for distribution to other groups. We have Monday off because of President's Day or whatever.

Lately I think I've been having many symptoms of iodine deficiency and hypthyroidism (one side of my thyroid is a bit swollen which is applying pressure to my throat, and I've had muscle pain, trouble sleeping, weight fluctuations, inability to concentrate, fatigue, dizziness, and a few of the other <a href="http://www.drgarysnyder.com/iodine_test ... ymptoms</a> to a lesser extent. I need to start using regular table salt instead of being all uppity with kosher salt (or, better yet, just take a daily multivitamin). I also need to finally see a doctor and get a checkup, which is a lot more useful than just speculating about symptoms based on webmd.com and mayoclinic.com and random wacky websites, especially since there's lots of other things this could be and it could also be a thyroid nodule (although the amount of swelling fluctuates throughout the day, so probably not).

It's the wonders of being a fed. It makes them willing to put up with tons. Trust me, I have stories of the shit we have to tolerate. It makes my all-day rock out seem like a holiday at Epcot Center.

It is not the diabetus. I've been screened for it in the last year and I showed no signs of it. Plus I just had a thorough eye exam which found no hints of diabetic retinopathy.

I did have a cyst-type thyroid nodule when I was 13 so it's possible that this is a recurrence of that.

(basically this symptom complex is actually pretty vague and can be a lot of things, and the fact my thyroid is swollen - in a very particular way - is the only thing that really differentiates it from most of the other things)

i don't think those eye exams are worth much in normal cases. i had one right before i was diagnosed and one a couple months after, and neither showed any damage.

but i'm going blind anyways.

Well, the more important thing to note is I don't have any of the symptoms specific to diabetes.

Native Instruments' installation and registration process is the BIGGEST PIECE OF SHIT EVER.

However, once I got Akoustik working, it was very nice.

Well, there's a few places where it's lacking. They don't quite get the damper sound right (it's a lot better than other piano synths I've heard but it still just sounds like the string is magically losing its inertia rather than being damped by a physical object), and while they've made a huge amount of headway in modeling the internal resonance when the damper pedal is down (in that they model it at all), it still sounds like a reverb, rather than strings getting harmonically excited by the other strings' sound. Also releasing the damper pedal sounds similarly unconvincing.

It's definitely the most realistic software piano I've ever played but it's still no substitute for the real thing. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford a proper home and a real grand piano.
