This has been a crazy day. I don't like it so far. But at least the meatloaf I'm having for lunch is excellent.

I got into work to find that the hard drive in my work laptop (which is all of 6 months old) died. Grr. This is going to be a huge pain in the ass.

Fortunately, I mostly just use it as a glorified terminal to a Linux system, so I didn't lose any actual work, but this means that at least for today I'm stuck using the Linux system, which isn't set up as nicely (there's a reason I brought a Mac to work instead of putting up with Linux).

Also, on the plus side, my hard drive was mostly backed up at home (although I don't know how complete the backup is and there could very well be a lot of important stuff missing). I wouldn't trust the backup to do a full system restore from, but it'll definitely be useful for recovering a lot of my installed software and settings and so on. Again, assuming the backup made it that far.

Still, not the best start to what is probably going to be a lousy day.

At least I already have a reservation at the Apple Store support desk, and the laptop is only about 6 months old so there shouldn't be any problem getting it serviced (and it's clearly the hard drive - when it spins it makes a rather loud KTHUNK noise). Of course this means I probably won't be getting a free upgrade to the much better model of MacBook which came out a couple weeks after I bought mine. Oh well.

qotd: the guitar solo in Frankie's version of my 120MPH is pretty great. I can't think of any other solos offhand.

QotD: the one that comes to mind right off is the "Intro" part to Sweet Jane on Lou Reed's "Rock 'n' Roll Animal." Jerry's stuff on the studio version of the Dead's Help-Slip-Franks is also right up there.

Today is water therapy class and lunch with my mom (who, in answer to a previous QotD, I see just about every day. My dad passed away in 1991). We didn't have an official instructor for the class today, people just came and walked laps in the pool, so I got to bring music... today I played my Bob Dorough jazz CD and nobody complained. Next Tuesday we may see how they feel about Hank Williams' Greatest Hits.

I've been fighting a cold / sore throat for the past week or so, and I think I've just about beaten it, though I wouldn't mind some extra time for sleep somewhere here...

This weekend, our animal rescue group is having a big fundraiser called "Beauty to the Rescue" - one of the local salons is donating a big chunk of every cut, perm, etc. to the group. On Saturday, they wanted a dog to appear on TV to help promote the event, and it looks like our current foster dog, Gwen, gets to be on TV!

Maybe not the dog I would have chosen first to promote an event called "Beauty to the RESCUE," but she's beautiful in her own way... I guess...

DRC: got a Credit Card fishing (phishing?) scam call today. Searched the number and turned up a couple of websites already discussing the number. So I call AT&T department after AT&T department to report what one of their customers up to.

Whenever you called the number back there was this obviously FAKE 'out of service' recording of a an 'out of service' recording. You can even hear two male voices in the background at the very first part of what must actually be voice mail. ( 954-535-9912 if you are at all curious - google search will bring up discussions on it too)

QOTD: Pink Floyd - David Gilmour - Comfortably Numb (there are two and they are both great, but the second one is one of the best solos EVER.)

I may chime back in with songfighter guitar solos but its taking me some time to think back. (I remember Frankie Big Face's band had a guitarist that pulled off a nice face contortor')

QOTD: Surprisingly, the most famous ripping guitar solos known to mankind, aren't my favs. I tend to lean towards more of the melody driven solos which are generally slow and soulful.

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Probably one of the best examples of a melody driven solo that I can think of right now. I just love it when the guitar picks up the vocals almost as a second vocalist, if you know what I mean.

But here are a few of the more famous ones that fit in my favorite list:
FreeBird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Still to this day I play it for inspiration.
Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. David Gilmour has always been a huge influence.
Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood and many more by SRV.
Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, and many more. Jimmy Page is incredible.

QOTD bonus:
Paco Del Stinko's Hit By A Train and many more PDS songs. I fucking love that song and I add it to everyone of mix CDs I make and many others. In fact, poker night was at my house last Wed. I generally have my Ipod plugged into my stereo set to random. One of Paco's songs came on, can't think of the name right now, but it's the one about bugs, and one of the guys asked what the fuck is this? I told him it's some freak from back east. They all looked at each other and said, dude, you have to burn me a copy of this shiz.

QotD: Wayyy too many to count, honestly. There's a song by John Petrucci And Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater (who do a whole album of keyboard-and-guitar songs) who have a song, can't think of the name (not that it matters if they're all instrumentals), track two on the album in question. I don't know if instrumentals really count or not, but there's a guitar part at about minute 8 of a 10 minute song where the guitar kicks in the overdrive for an awesome minute-and-a-half lick.

Also, if you like that, I recommend the guitar solo from Over the Rhine's "When I Go" - but the live version only from the CD "Changes Come" (I think) - saw that live and it was fantastic. That was by a guy named Paul Moak.

As for SF I comment pretty often on guitar solos in songs, but I don't remember which are my favorites... tho Starfinger's sea bass solo on my Fight the Sea is particularly great - that's a bass guitar, does it count?

That isn't on Youtube, so I'll link to the 2nd best guitar solo ever - Streets of Your Town by The Go-Betweens. Solo at around 2:10 was apparently played on a guitar bought for $10 at a garage sale, or something like that.

Funny, after I first read the QOTD my first though was Pink Floyd! No song in particular, just Pink Floyd.
You would think when someone mentions guitar solos, you would think of Steve vie, Joe Santrini, or Eddie Van Helen,
But their mostly just flashy player, making guitar solos memorable might be another acquire skill.

Sultans of swing by Dire straits has a great solo by Mark Knopler.

Mark Knopfler is a soulful guitar player and I like his style.

I mean the human eyes are a precious thing (just ask a blind man), so when they are screaming STOP! STOP! You just have to listen to them.
Now unless you have a 40+ inch monitor where each letter is as big as a finger nail, then it might make it easier.
But am telling you brother, reading long bold text in a shitty 17” LCD monitor at work is not for everyone. You need patients, determination, and time. I don’t have either of them. But if people can find it within them to reach the end of a long and boring post, god bless their soul.
We all know text can be boring to read, especially under harsh circumstances, so I give you props for always trying your best when posting, with the little funny animated icons and all.
Am pretty sure if we could embed flash and audio into this board, you probably be doing it all over the place, but hey at least you don’t spam like Glenn case, man can that guy spam.

Ops started to get side track their, should get back to the topic at hand. So Victoria Secret right, apparently they caught themselves becoming to sexy? Did I read that right, Victoria Secret is getting tire of being sexy. 1+1=2, sky=blue, and Victoria Secret= sexy.. Something’s just add up. Can the number two get tire of being next to a pair of number 1's and just go: “you know what fuck you! i'm moving up to the teens range…" no , it just doesn’t happen. But when is all said and done is just another day, full of work, numbers, and guitar solo's, so you know what. God bless you.

I share the David Gilmour love and Jimmy Page, especially when he was all fragile sounding on In Through The Out Door. I'm probably the only one, but maybe that's good. (Shhh! It's supposed to be a secret!)

One of the greatest has to be All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. The solo is like a little story within the song, full of color and landscapes.

Not sure. I don't think there is any precedent. We're probably the first Australian's to ever even consider it. The traffic across the Tasman Sea usually only flows exclusively westward. But there's so many kiwis in Brisbane and Sydney now - New Zealand itself is probably the best place to go to get away from them.

...and, as much as I hate to admit it - Steinlager is quite possibly the world's best beer.

I agree - less is more when it comes to guitar solos (the Go-B song "Part Company" I mentioned earlier is a bit on the wanky side - I think it uses 4 different notes)

drc: Well, I have come to the solid conclusion that Vista is the absolute worst platform on which to try and record multitrack audio. Period. Vista is killing my inner child. Every audio app I've tried today crashes after getting a couple tracks done. This is maddening. I have a hard drive kicking around with a fresh install of XP on it, and I am going to put it back in my 'puter and *sigh* re-install all my audio apps. Fuck Vista. Fuck it in it's stupid, bloated, "your favorite apps will crash on this, guaranteed" ass.

qotd: I have no idea. While I kind of roll my eyes at complete fretboard wankery, I have to admit there are some wankers who make interesting solos. I guess my favorite guitar solo is the first Black Sabbath album

In related news, I heard this band on the radio the other day... DRAGONFORCE. They are the *worst* crap I've ever heard in my entire life. My 10 year old daughter was even pulling faces and saying "What IS this stupid crap, dad?" I gave her a pat on the head and said "That's my girl"
