Well you obviously WERENT observant enough to notice the "suck my cock" comment was a joke...(see: "since im pretending to be a gangsta this week").jack shite wrote:pigpen, it's not that we aren't very observant, it's that we ARE very observant. things that you might not deem important to being integral to a "good song" we may find to be very important. you seem very defensive over your entry. obviously a number of folks have shown a dislike for it, but try to take the criticism here with a grain of salt. everything you read here is just an opinion so try to keep that in mind before you start tossing around personal insults directed towards people you don't know. glenn's criticisms were about your song, not you. yet you responded with a personal attack. keep in mind that glenn is also one of the best rappers here, and he rarely gives feedback period, so it wouldn't hurt to try to gain some insight from his feedback instead of instantly dismissing it with a "suck my cock" comment.
you know, sometimes the songs that get the worst feedback in the forum actually win. just ask the iron clef
Glenn being the best rapper here says alot about you. Myself being a big fan of (and obvious partaker in) rap can see that Glenn is obviously not a rapper and i didnt review him on that merit. Seems to me 'Def Author' was more a producer/dj song with the lyrics just filling as vocals. Just my opinion though right? ^_^
Also i dont give a toss whatchu think of my stuff. Tis certainly nowhere near my best work what with their being a week time frame and i having little other choice then to use my home mic (teh uber crap). I just doin this for fun. So its either this or some battle forum...dissing gets tiresome fast so i rather the title thing. Much cooler.
Also i dont mind throwing back and forth insults...also alot more fun here then in some battle forum where everything is regimented. Feels so much more natrual.
(comment that threatens your manhood here)

The best thing about it is, whats good and whats not good all depends on who's listening. Fried, I gotta agree with this 100%:
I gotta go with Fried again on the Johnsonic review...but I really dig the heavy verses...but hey Johnsonic? Was that vocal inspired by Guns and Roses' "It's so Easy", or Stone Temple Pilots first hit (I forget the name). I keep thinking "I see yer sister in a Sunday dress.."
I'm still listening. I'd have to say the top three so far are the Deshead, Johnsonic, and the Hell Yeahs. Pigpen and Def Author take the cake when it comes to humor though...
Man why participate if songfight if yer not ready to FIGHT? Dukes up...I loved Pigpen's tune in a highly comedic way...like watching the American Idol tryouts. Same goes for the Rusty Red Riders tune.fried wrote:Kapitano This has a Bowie meets Neil Young feel.

You should note that if you do do a beef song, everything you say in it is 100% true. ie: If you say "shut up glenn or i'll steal your cat", people would call the police and instruct glenn to keep an eye on his cat and hate you forever because you plan on stealing glenn's cat.PiGPEN wrote:Personal Note: Why do i get the feeling people are trying to get me to do stereotypical beef songs?
ps glenn is the best rapper here.

1. he is rapping, is he not? that makes him a rapper, does it not? i mean, his style is vastly different from yours but that doesn't mean less good necessarily. furthermore, while i don't know your age, i would be willing to wager actual money (like a quarter maybe) that glenn has been rapping longer than you have been alive.PiGPEN wrote:1. 2. isn't that what lyrics are for??? otherwise, i am not understanding this statement at all.
3. bullshit; you seem to be taking negative opinions WAY WAY too personally.

1a. No tis not rap...rap-ish but not rap. If youre just taking into account lyrics that rhyme and isnt singing then their is a hell of alot of 'Rock' that fits that category.tviyh wrote:1. he is rapping, is he not? that makes him a rapper, does it not? i mean, his style is vastly different from yours but that doesn't mean less good necessarily. furthermore, while i don't know your age, i would be willing to wager actual money (like a quarter maybe) that glenn has been rapping longer than you have been alive.

1b. Im 19 and have been rapping since i was a hostile 10 year old trying not to get my arse kicked in Houston ghettos. And age isnt an issue to me...i dont care what Geriatric Ward people reppin from.
2. No. There are lyrics as Lyrics and lyrics as Vocals.
3. 'Seems' being the keyword here. Another observant one you are.

This is a reviews.
by Phil Redmon
- First in todays calvacade of wonderment is Andy Balham & Kapitano. This has a neat sound, the odd vocal separation thing is pretty fun. I am reminded of... what's that band's name... British Sea Power. Not a lot, mind you, but enough to mention. I'm paerticularly fond of the drums, the nice snappy snare. Also enjoyed wuz th' guitar interplay, the quieter guitar on the one, and the louder skanks on on the two's n' such. The solo loses a couple of points, but over all, this is a polished, if not entirely memorable tune. Cool theme, lyrically, also, btw, etc. (A song you might already enjoy: Pink Cigarette, by some Mike Patton band.) You guys are a good team.
- Speaking of teams, Th' Bloody Hams - Hot shit, an interband! This sounds so good, it's like you're all in one room together. I like the sad-yet-menacing tone of this tune, even if the, er, meaning is a lil' lost on me. Man, I wish there was a guitar solo on this track! Right after the big flute build. I don't know how objective I can be about this song, I mean, it's a bunch of cool guys doing something cool! I am flagranty gurgling for more.
- Another smash-hit is Def Author's (aka SongFight champeen, Glenn Case) ol' school shootzin' jam. At first, I thought the hookity bit was a lil' too repetitiontive, but after getting all the way through the fight (and oof, there are some fuckin' stinkers dude) I wasn't bothered by it at all. I just remembered it as the chorus, and it didn't seem to as redundant is I am right now. (there are, thus far, 2 Homestar references in this paragraph.) Did you ever do the trick with turning the brightness all the way up? You could just aim at the T.V. and hit a duck every time? The impressed the hell out of some kid I knew that lived down on Gould St. Amazingly tight double-tracking, man. Uncanny. You have no canny. That can't be right. Is "uncanny"like "invaluable"? Huh. (great spoken "duck call guy" samplzors.)
- Ham Samwich have restructured, and now they maraud the m3u as Deshead, beacause they were tired of people being able to pronounce their name. Man alive, that was a purdy guitar solo. Anyways, this is a great sounding song. I mean, super harmonies on the "ol' familiar words" bit is real nice. I dunno. I hate to say it, but I liked this song a whole lot better before I heard your other two songs, which I now have. I mean, at first, I thought you were a rocker playin' soft, but, well, statistically speaking, you're a softie playin' rock. me no know. Chest hair.
- Do you smell New Wave? Then Edge of LA must be cookin'! I think I saw the second half of this video one time on... uh.. Night Flight. Fuckity-Jones, this song is four minutes long!?!?! Well, this is a cute jam and everything, and I can just picture my upstairs neighbor and the guy from Bronski Beat totally making-out to this song. Nice to meet you
- Gareth Duncan tries just the right amount. This has a good beat, and I can nod to it. Great feel, and nice second verse (where I think a song like this could fall apart) and (you know what I mean, right) another thing, great length. It makes me want to listen to it again, rather than saying "when is this over!?!" So yeah, nice sound, good seperation on the instruments, thoughtful panning. I like this. It has a nice gold sparkle plastic sound, also: a cartoon of a cowboy painting. Also: I didn't even notice that the chorus was the title until the 2nd listen!
- That means it's time for the motherfuckin' Hell Yeahs! I've heard this son a thousand times by now, and I still fucking love it.I know a lot of your fellow SongFighters don't know the sinister true story behind these lyrics, but I think they'd understand. Moo-hoo-hah! We should watch that Spider-man 2 dvd tonight, and everybody else should vote for the Hell Yeahs.
- Jon Sonic has gone mental for crazy cymbal panning! Man, this song is super long, and corny! Really repetitive, andthat is a totally half-assed riff. Constructively speaking: I suspect you are also Matty and his rusty Red Ryders. How many times did you stop the tape, and when did you decide to go for 4:20?
- Kamakura's song say me this: Was this song recorded is some chocks yard? I love how quiet the chorus vocals are. You are singing so quietly! "Fantastique!" Oh goodness, this was a gem. Whuzzat noise at the end?
- Pig Pen - Dude, do you like Big L? If not, you should listen to some. It's pretty danm raw, dude. Also, calling your self sexist and homophobic probably isn't going to do much for you in the way of votes on the ol' SongFight machine. Furthermore, why would you ever use the line "I wan't they asses blown?" God, this is horrible. Nice 50 impression, I guess. This is clearly a joke, and totally lame. also: way too long. by at least 2 verses. Horrible! Worth mentioning: I was infriated when Jay-z robbed the "Me an' my girlfriend" bit from 2-pac. Jay-Z brags about not writing down his rhymes, but it's easy to memorize someone elses.
- Triggernaut - Fuckin' A! You guys this is, like, a fucking MASTERPIECE of audio terror. Absolutely rediculous. Horrifying! That gurgle at the end... hilarious Quite a ride.
Wow, that was excrutiating! Reviews are for the birds!
No wonder!

At some point with my new broadband connection I shall write reviews for this little fight. But two comments so far
Hell Yeahs - over 2 minutes? It's prog-punk! There seems to be a link between this and your 'From this Day On' lyrically? Do a sniff a concept album in the offing? I am not that fond of the crammed in triple track vocals of the chorus but the 'you know I'd do the same for you' bit is great, and the way you phrase out 'All things must pass, but damn if that wasn't fast' makes it a line good enough for me to steal for something else!
Kapitano & Balham - great tune. Love the 'Oasis' solo and while the vocal style is a bit jarring at first, the contrast really works when the brain gets used to it. Some really nice fretwank going on, and the lyric is cute, and pleasantly self-aware of its inspiration. Bowie fronts Jet or somesuch. BUT the production is, well, not terrible, but really detracting from the quality of the song. The vocals are buried off to one side and sound like they've been top'n'tailed too heavily. The rhythym guitar is a notch or two too loud. There is a muddiness about it, overall, that spoils what would be a top-notch effort.
Rest to follow by the end of the week, but don't hold your breath. I haven't even installed the router yet, and I am buuussssyyyyy.

Actually, there are some lyrical references to 'Hold This For Me' (the Katie Spade line), but it does have a similar "crime feel" as 'From This Day On'. It also reminds me of Abominominous' 'Silent Pipe' thematically speaking.j$ wrote:

Andy Balham feat. Kapitano - The double tracked vocals kinda bugged me, You'd do better to just stand by one take rather than try to thicken up your voice that way. You have to be a really great singer to pull it off (think Elliott Smith), if you're not great with your pitch it'll actually make you sound worse.
The Blood Hams - I like this song. The backing vocals are nice and well executed, I like the recorder/flute solo too. Overall it's really pretty and listenable. Nice job.
The Def Author - Mmm sounds like Gameboy music. Oh cool a Nintendo reference. Oh, a whole lot of them. This is cool and made me laugh a fair few times. If you really put this whole thing together in a week then I'm really impressed, good job.
deshead - Nice riff and well programmed drums. This has a groove. Love the singing too, very stylish and listenable. Really pretty chorus too. Nice hooks. Great job.
Edge of LA - Bring the drums up in the mix, the hi hat is only vaguely heard, the bass drum and snare are completely cameos. I like the melodies and the vocals, very cool. The guitar is also very poppalicious which I dig. A little long though.
Gareth Duncan - I love this song. The singing melody is ace as are the backing vocals and the hookiness of the chorus. The strength of the song more than makes up for the slight vocal bum notes every now and then. Nice piano playing, it really augments the song. Top tune.
The Hell Yeahs - Rocky. Something about it just doesn't grab me though really. I don't know whether it's cause there's a lot going on (like the very busy kick drum) or whether there's just not much variation in the vocal melody when the chorus comes around, it's really just the two or three notes. Because the singing is so fast I guess. I dunno, didn't really do much for me. It's a shame because I can tell you're all proficient musicians, maybe this just isn't your finest vehicle.
HillBilly - This is recorded pretty quietly. Not really a lot going on to be honest and it didn't grab my attention.
Jon Sonic - Funky riff. This is kinda repetitive and I lost interest pretty quickly, nearly 2 mins is way too long before your first change in mood/backing. The entire song should be around 2-3 mins long! So overall just gets set in its ways for far too long.
Kamakura - I like the chorus a lot. Although it bears more than a passing resemblance to Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".
Matt etc. - Poorly played guitar and weirdness. This is wank.
Pigpen - "Toetagged and bagged it"?. I've heard that before. OK your rhymes get pretty lost at times. "I'm not some gay"? Dear god. Just no. Where you were trying to put a hook in you failed, sorry. All great rap tunes have a hook. Sorry.
Tiggernaut - The Texas MuppetSaw Massacre. I wish I was as messed up as you were when you made this.
A good fight, although it got a bit poxy towards the end there.
My favourites are: The Blood Hams, deshead, and Gareth Duncan
