Scribbles and Whatnot

Post by EmbersOfAutumn »

Hey, what does your 'creative process' look like? Sheets of music, lyrics and chords, etc. Just a look into the mind of the person writing the music--how they get to where they get to.

Most of what I do is in my head. I'm finding that this particular system isn't working very good anymore. My lyrics are always hand written with arrows going back and forth, scribbled out words and lines. Pretty messy. The only time I type the lyrics is when I add them to the archive.

I'd like to see some of your hand written, arrow-directed examples.

That's kind of what this thread is about. My first example was typed because, if i did the lyrics before the music, they're typed out and the Chord Prog and/or tabs are added in by hand. If music comes first, it usually ends up like the second example.

Ummm... there is a thread about this already, buried somewhere. In Help & How To? It's too early & I'm too damned lazy right now to dredge it up.

Pretty simple really.

1. I spend half an hour or so in Fuity Loops making a beat.

2. I write lyrics to fit the beat in notepad.

3. I open the beat in Goldwave and record the vocals and then mix those two together.

4. Submit to the Fightmaster.

5. Get 1 or 2 votes.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style. :D

I never write down the chords, since it's too much effort. I should probably do that sometime though ... I might regret it later. The lyrics for just about every song I've ever written are in a single notebook, which is completely full now. I guess I'll just have to start anew.

I believe it's his home and work votes actually. Even Momz has limits to her support of futility.

Check it out though, this week Rone decided to simplify things even further. He completely skipped step # 2, which cut step # 3 completely in half. Unfortunately, he decided to stick with step # 4 which means step # 5 will remain in play as he votes for himself from home and work........again.

Come on now, Rone has a song covered by a very famous Canadian that is in a Hollywood production by a Canadian. I for one will stand up a cheer when I see it on the big screen. I be loven me some Rone.

But there's a fair amount of this as well:

I usually write lyrics straight to the "Ye Olds Lyrics" thread - then edit them later if necessary.
When finished I print out and sing.

This is because my handwriting is atrocious and by posting them early - it gives me extra incentive to finish the song.

I never write down chords. But I only know about 3 of them - so that isn't a great problem

Here's part of the lyric original for "Kick Start" -

Image

I create the drum parts in Band In a Box, and as part of that process, I wind up with a chord chart like this:

Image

(the chord chart is cropped, it is actually about twice that wide, and includes bars 3-4, etc.)

What's especially cool about the chord chart is that while the song is playing to record the drum part (I record on an external standalone recorder, not on the computer), the cursor follows the chords so it's really easy to lay down that first rhythm guitar and know that I've got all the chords where they go. I wouldn't necessarily need to plug in all the chords just to create the drum part, but I like listening to the guitar, keyboard, etc. parts while I'm working out the song structure, and then I just mute everything but the drums when I actually record the drum tracks tot he AW16.
