man it has been hotter than piss (literally) here the past few days. and i live on the coast, where it's cooler than the poor mofos living anywhere east of me. hopefully, we'll get some relief (fog) tomorrow. not that i like the fog much, but man, sometimes you can learn to appreciate the "natural air conditioning" this time of the year.

qotd: how do you stay cool on hotter than piss days?

my tips include hanging out at the mall, going to a movie, and spending as much time in the walk in as possible. the last one only applies to restaurant workers and rich folks lucky enough to own their own walk ins.

i've been cooped up this morning watching "Lost" on demand and getting caught up. i think i'm off to the beach to jump in the nice cool pacific ocean and watch dorky guys try to throw their wife/girlfriend/significantother/date/buddy/momordad/kid into the water. fun!

We put a ceiling fan in the kids' play room years ago and I totally regret not putting one in the bedrooms and the living room. Genius devices that use a fraction the energy of a/c. NYC sucks in the summer, it's laughable when people complain about the winters. We try to spend as much time in CT or VT where at least it's clean really hot air.

I prefer the fan over AC. Maybe this year I'll sleep in one of those fan-forts you make when you're a kid. If you didn't, here it is. Put the end of a sheet over the edge of your square window fan. Then pin the edges down with shoes, books, chair legs, I suppose even actual pins might work-duh. Turn on fan, climb in and sit in the noisy bubble. Wheee!

I just stay inside with the AC on. Unfortunately on the west coast of Florida, fans don't do a bit of good. During fall and spring they have the desired effect, but by May it's so humid all they do is push the moist air around. I mean really, you walk outside from being in the AC and you can feel condensation on your skin. You just feel sticky. I''ve gone to New Mexico the last few Septembers, and it felt cooler there, even though the actual air temp was higher. I told everyone I had to go to the desert to get some cool weather.

And there they run the swamp coolers to introduce moisture as a coolant. Go figure.

I try not to move.

Or I dump water on my head. Either or - they both work pretty well.

Yep - it is a lot nicer in when it is 45 degrees (113F) in Mt Isa (tropical desert) than it is when it's 35 degrees (95F) in Townsville (tropical coast)

What is a "swamp cooler". Do you mean an evaporative cooler (where you have a big chimney thing on the roof - and a big noisy fan box out the back blowing air over water)? I had one at Mt Isa. They are great. Much more pleasant than a/c - but they don't work in humid places like Brisbane.

Here.

Started the day at the "Orange County Young Authors' Fair" where my daughter was one of 10 from her school selected to have a story on display. Then we went to the school I work at, which was celebrating it's 50th year. Then home where I napped in the heat - we have no solution - it was 97 degrees and we just had our air ripped out as part of a home addition. This also involved removing a few walls and replacing them with plywood - so the cross-vent is not available. When I woke up I went out to record in our out-building which was 106 degreees (Nur Ein!)

I didn't stay cool today - I just powered through it.

Still here - barely.

Yes. They have a plasticy, woven pad in them the water trickles over and the fan does its blowing magic to. Very effective in the right climate, and useless where I live. I liked them when I lived in No Horse Town's shitty little state. :)

Yeah, air conditioning. Phoenix really couldn't exist without it, or without the big ol' nuclear power plant about 40 miles from downtown. And the pool is finally warm enough to go in (I am a total wuss, "warm enough to go in" means about 90). And I'm finally figuring out how to get the ice properly ground for margaritas and pina coladas. And thanks to the low humidity here, we don't really consider it "hot" until it gets over 105 or so.

I like ceiling fans, the Mrs. doesn't. We have 'em, but she turns them off whenever I turn them on.

DRC: Nur Ein song is in, I am secretly (?) pleased to note that I'm not the only one who is stressed out about how they did this week. I am not fighting a cold or sore throat or anything, although I did deliberately pitch the song a bit high for my voice, and there are a couple spots where you can tell... and this time I got to do three or four rounds of tracking the vocals, which meant I did a lot of lyric tweaking and figuring out how to phrase things so the lyrics fit the melody.

QOTD: Float around in the pool drinking a frozen cocktail with a tiny umbrella in it.

I've never made a fan tent, but I sure want to now. What if I use a window air conditioner AND a fan? Sounds like frosty fun. Anyone want to come over for some margaritas in my freezer tent?

:) You're so funny. It can get to about 40 degrees sometimes here. That's rare, but during the summer it's usually about 30-35 degrees C. During the winter, it can get as low as -40 ... this winter it got down to about -50 with windchill.
