That is cool Ken. And like Andrew said, I think drummers would feel less of a problem doing that. I have no problem with studio production, in fact I love it, as long as the band can do the same thing live.

I picked up an Ibanez SRX500 Bass at Axe Music. I got the transparent black colour, just in case you wanted to know this, and I got it at a great price. List price is $640, I got it for $275 on clearance.

The amp I got is just a crappy little peavey - for now I'll just be recording line in anyways. I don't have the equipment, space or cash to deal with a beefy, huge bass amp right now. But either way - at least I can hear myself through the peavey. I'll post a link to some low-bitrate sound clips of basslines I'm already jamming on later tonight. Next step ... room treatment!!!

That's a perdee one Andrew. I play an Ibanez bass, too. For recording, I personally think it's better to go direct with the bass. That way you can EQ and add FX until the cows come home. It's just a matter of how you like to dial in the neck and bridge pickups. I play with a pick, so too much bridge pickup gets to picky.....if you will.

I can't imagine myself playing this with a pick - it would just seem wrong. (no offense to your style, of course - picking a bass just isn't my thing). Yeah, I'll probably be doing the line-in. Maybe once I record another song I could get some advice on bass tone (which I know nothing about about). I'm just looking forward to messing around on it for now.

Well, I have found that it's easier to add high tones to a bass track than realistic low tones. So I'd say go heavy on the neck pickup. I personally have a harder time taking out high tone that I don't like, as opposed to adding them in. But I can never get the sweet low tone that the bass does naturally. So I go heavy neck P/U. That just me, of course. But I have had good comments on my bass tracks.

No worries, and thanks for your comment! - I like that song, but it hasn't quite reached its full potential yet. I'm reworking it (and writing a buttload of other songs), and it should be on my next album.

ps - Thanks paco - I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun. At least my songs won't all sound like they're being played through headphones anymore (hopefully).

Hey guys!

So, I've been effing around with my new equipment (pop guard, reaper, bass, computer/speakers), and I decided to try remixing Sleepwalking. I recorded a bass line for it, redid the vocals (trying to find a sweet spot where there was more range of frequencies ... to no avail), and processed the whole thing with all kinds of awesome plugins that I found in Ken's thread. I think it sounds way beefier, and much less like it was recorded in my room. Tell me what you think!

Thanks Lunk. The advice in this thread (particularly Adam's) was really helpful. I feel like it might be excessively trebly on one side, but I guess I'll listen again in a day or so to see how the mix sounds then.

Good idea to approach with fresh ears. Also try it in your car, for example, while driving and while stopped. And other systems. It's challenging to find the best sound on a variety of systems.
