Yeah and what PC do you have I may have an old no longer used copy of cubasis that you could use if your PC can handle it?

Personally speaking I like the content and effort put into your song structures and melodies and feel you are being held back by equipment.

Anyone want to help the guy with an old sound card or could we put a paypal collection together to get him a USB audio interface? I'd happily put in $10 it being the season of giving. Thoughts?

Listened to all the tunes yesterday while working...was gonna post reviews... but my much vaunted "high speed" internet was down!!! CAble too!!! Fuckers.... see, start paying for cable after ten years and all of a sudden service interuptions... (yeah yeah stealing cable is a crime... so is watching "Friends") ... anyway, mayhap tonight, mayhap not... King, I love your tune!!! The lyrics are sick!

I love a clever twist on the title....

15-16...I wanna add bass and drums to your track...might do that if you want... sounds cool as is, but the track was begging me to do it... maybe I can whip that together on Saturday, unless you are diametrically opposed to it!

So, I spent last night listening to Uptown Ruler with Dana and getting wasted together... we had fun. Stared at the christmas tree.... flaking out to cool jazz...ahhhhh.....

Oh yeah, that 62 track? kick ass. Sometimes I do a sf tune, and just don't like the end result, but I dug this one! Puce, you asked about a "scale" or somesuch thing... I can only say, it's probably just me your recognizing...same drums, gear, etc, same mind. I use all different tonal centres...although I tend to use chromatism alot... and psuedo-jazzy/metal phrasings on my solos...funny thing about the solo, I listened to all my old tracks two days ago, and I regurgiate the same licks ...I must be subconsciously attempting to perfect that same damn idea!!! ...gonna have to really try and go somewhere else with my next one! ...that solo is dedicated to C hack by the way... don't know why he hasn't thanked me yet!!

Assuming your not offended, if you email me with your postal address I have a copy of Cubasis VST that should run on it. Hoepfully other charitable souls like Fried will come forward with suggestions and donation.

Keep at it dude.

so i accidentally downloaded both fights into the same folder, and i'm too lazy to separate them so -- sorry but you've got a longer list to scan through to find your name. deal.

15-16 puzzle - the recording and mixing both sound rather well-done here. vocals are nicely upfront and sound pretty good, and the guitar is pleasantly almost-in-tune. the second vocal part and the scat solo thingy are really cool. a nice start to the fights.

andy balham f. kapitano - the vocals here are way mufflier... music starts out pretty good -- probably some mixing issues marring total enjoyment of this but all the parts sound like they are pretty well-done. i wish the lyrics were a little clearer, and the song kind of ends just when i'm really starting to get into it.

big matt hyatt & rusty red ryders - hm, the electronic chicken noises are kind of frightening. vocals aren't really bad, but not very good either, and they don't seem to have been recorded terribly well. funny that you say "to make a long story short" when three minutes of the song remain. and, as this goes on, the vocals seem to get kind of worse. having trouble following the lyrics, which is a shame because they seem to be telling some kind of story that would probably add some kind of interest to the song.

creep - the "blister in the sun" sounding bassline and the tinkly glockenspiel thing are pretty cute. vocals could stand to be a bit clearer, but overall this is a nice little happy tune.

deshead - nice and loud. the shouty vocals are pretty cool too. sorry i don't really have more to say, but i'm realising that it's midnight and i've still got twenty more songs to go and i'm probably going to get tired of reviewing long before then. guitar solo is appropriately rockin'.

edge of la - kind of poppy and bouncy sounding, but then the reverby backing vocals and stuff make it just a little bit strange enough to still sound fresh and interesting. lyrics are pretty repetitive, but even at four minutes, it doesn't seem overly long.

gareth duncan - the guitar playing is pretty decent, but seems a little bit louder than it needs to be in comparison to the singing. more repetitiveness at the end here.

hillbilly - some tasty guitar-pickin', nicely subdued and understated. here again, vox are a tad on the quiet side, but fairly well-done. nice lil mellow tune going on, good job.

johnsonic - wait a minute, aren't you the dude that was complaining about the lack of high-end in the hell yeahs' song? this is like bass city! not that i'm complaining, though. i usually love me some stoner rock and this is a pretty decent approximation.

kamakura - i like the sound of the vocals but it seems like you're singing really quietly, and this would probably sound much better if you were really belting it out. were the drums played live? it seems like there are some timing issues somewhere, and i want to blame the drums but if they were programmed it must be something else.

king arthur - you always seem to take these titles in creative directions that nobody else thinks of, and this was no exception. i'm just not sure how the carribbean feel with the steel drums and stuff fits with the ice-skating theme? apart from that, the guitars and everything else sound pretty good, and the playful manner you're using to deliver the story works pretty well at poking fun at the amount of serious attention the story got in the news at the time. (assuming that's your intent, based on the "presidential debates" comment).

leaf 62 - musically this is pretty great, especially the drumming, and i'm digging the bassline a bunch. i just wish the singing was a little bit ballsier to match the music a little more.

loose laces - some typically awesome mob01d singing, fantastic lyrics, and better-than-normal music (i like the blend of distorty spooky noises with the cute synthy stuff a whole lot!).

mediteraniem - i like the guitar leads here, and the rest of the music is pretty engaging too, really drawing my attention. which is a good thing because the singing itself isn't very notable. the occasional backing vocal bits are kinda decent, but for the most part, the vocals are mediocre at best.

pigpen - the samples you use could be kind of cool if it was put together better, and also this is way way way way way too repetitive -- it's like the same five seconds of music a zillion times in a row. the flow of the rapping is, well, rather lacking. hard to believe this is the same person who did "shaving in the dark" which i liked quite a bit. there really isn't much to like here.

pipe fist - kind of cool and creepy... although this is another case where it sounds like you're telling a story that would be interesting if i could hear it clearly enough to really follow what is being said. the switch from verse to chorus is a little strange, rhythmically, like it just doesn't quite work. but besides that, i like the music here a lot, and the vocals sound like they're rather good if only they were more distinct in the mix.

poor june - i think i already reviewed this song for you in IRC... that seems like so long ago, though. anyway my opinion probably hasn't changed much -- the piano playing is really good but i wish the tinkly, moving right-hand part was louder relative to the comparatively plodding left-hand part. and the singing is nice and sounds better (recording-wise) than some of your stuff i've heard in the past, but nevertheless, i'd really like to see what you'd be capable of with a real mic and recording setup.

sugarpot gamelan - sounds like something i'd expect to hear on the "oldies" station -- kind of dave clark five-ish. except the vocals which are practically inaudible over the music. as far as i can tell, you're a pretty good singer, but i can't really be sure because i am just barely hearing you!

test tube steak - oh man, why would someone take such a great cello-and-tinklebell intro, and ruin it with such garbage synth-vocals? the music here is delightful, but the vocals make me want to vomit. seriously.

the bloody hams - i'm not so sure about the backing vocals in some places, but the lead vox sound pretty great, and all the music is wonderful, i love the blend of acoustic guitar and tremoloey synth goodness. good stuff all around.

the def author - oh man, so hilarious. this is really good stuff, even by def author standards.

the hell yeahs - the vocals get a little bit buried here sometimes simply because there is so much happening in this song, particularly during the choruses. but busy-ness aside, it's sounding pretty cool.

the likely lads - the singing is rather nice, and pretty clear compared to most of the songs here. that's all i got, sorry.

tiggernaut - you scared my cat away!

wreckdom - organ is a bit too loud... the recording and mixing in general is not too great here -- lots of overloading and kind of painful on the ears. but beyond that, this kind of resembles octothorpe in a way :)

alrighty, so that's that. i'm also too lazy to do separate top five lists so here's an overall top ten. the order is somewhat random though.
edge of la, andy balham f. kapitano, creep, hillbilly, the hell yeahs, deshead, 15-16 puzzle, the def author, the bloody hams, loose laces.

1: mediteraniem, looselaces, leaf, kingarthur, poorjune, wreckdom
2: likely lads, sugarpot, creep, 1516, pipefist

wreckdom reminds me of tom waits this week, in his more awkward bluesy moments. that's actually pretty cool.

i'm gonna vote for king arthur, 'cause his was the most fun track.

ps hmm, test tube steak was missing from my original set. however, i really didn't like it much. sorry.

my vote was between
<b>Pipe fist-</b> is this chack? sure has the blues feel to it. the best part of the song is when the electric guitar come in... sounds sinister. man even
the songwriting sounds like something chack would write. eitherway is a decent song.

<B>Poor june -</b> i know you probrably don't notice, but your vocals have surely improve(keep singing!), it sounds alot natural that it used to.
also, i'd enjoy your pianos song better than the guitar songs.

<B>Sugarpot Gamelan -</b> really like the sining. the vocals need to come up in the mix, though.

<B>WreckdoM -</b> finally WreckdoM has created something funny, but it also sounds good, and has a good vibe. i preffer this to you regular noise collage.

WreckdoM gets my vote.

15-16: i like the vocals... and i think the lyrics are pretty intriquing... but i wished more would've been done music wise... maybe just a few guitar licks over it or somethin'... but not bad

creep: i gotta go with not liking the 2 chord progression... it has an interesting concept... but i'm not feeling the vocal thing too much... i've enjoyed a lot of your other songs more... the lyrics aren't really keeping my interest...

King Author: damn... your song intriqued me the whole time through... the lyrics were great... awesome story... haha... it's good reminiscing over past odd stories... triple galooly? this gets my vote... how bout this you may win your first fight... \m/ which is much deserved...

Leaf62: i like the guitar and drums... but i'm not really feeling the song as a whole... some really cool mix ups and stuff that i like... and i like the playing of everything... just guess i'm not really huge on the song itself...
by the way pretty cool solo

thelikelylads: really nice production... i like it... think the vocals should be brought up some... some out of tune vox here and there... maybe could use some reverb and another take... (of course i say that... i should really take my own advice)... i like the idea of the song... just wished it were done better vocally... like the production of everything else is so good... but the vocals are cool just need more of something...

LooseLaces: ok... thank you for having a song stuck in my head all week... this is probably just shy of out doing the milkshake in catchibility haha... i strangely enough can't help, but enjoy it haha... this was pretty well done... some of it does sound familiar... but i dig the chorus stuff... really cool... and the lyrics are of course catchy haha... i bought voted for it... it took a lot for me not 2...
but really good stuff i'm glad you/y'all made it

mediteraniem: like the guitar... the production isn't the best, but that doesn't bother me... i guess the only thing that really bothers me is the 60's surf music sound... it's never been somethin' i enjoyed... you did a really good job on the song though... and i do appreciate how well it's done... just one of those songs that i can listen 2... just can't really see voting for it out of personal taste...

Pipefist: the guitar needs more to it... it's interesting... but kind of bland... and repetitive at parts.... i like when your vocals come out a bit more... but overall... it could've been done better... and some of the sounds are really jarring... and take away from the song more then they add 2...
and a couple out of time parts... but not too bad... just needs work...

me: yea it does sound like the music is in another room... i feel bad about that... and i think i should've re-done the second chorus... but i never got around to re-doing it... i actually kinda liked the echo on the ending... but i guess that just comes down to personal taste...
i wanted to add like strings to it and stuff... but also... never got around 2 it...
anyways... i'm still working on ways to bring out the music more...
eventually i'll find someway... some really awesome people are sending me stuff... and giving me ideas... and i really appreciate a lot of y'alls help... means a lot

sugarpotgamelan: the vocals seem kind of muddled... hard for me to understand 'em... could've been done better... wished it would've been sung out... the music has a cool idea... but it seems sort of already done... i guess the music doesn't seem very original to me... sounds like some kinda holiday commercial music... which is cool... but not really moving me... and i still hope the vocals were brought out more :'(...

(player isn't sayin' the name of this one)...: like the fake cello sounding thing... some of the vibes are out of tune but cool... haha... like i'm really enjoying the vocal effect to some degree... i can't understand a word... i just wished it was a lil' less so i could understand the vocals... but it's entertaining for some odd reason

wreckdom: haha y'all are deffinately original... i can respect that... i guess i wished y'all were a little more musically together... but i guess that's part of y'alls catch... kinda brings a real un-real sort of feel, but i guess that's expected from a name like wreckdom... i'm really glad y'all do the fights... even though y'all don't hit me on a personal taste sort of level... it deffinately is different from anything else... and i appreciate that...
other then that i don't have much to say about it haha...
i'm just glad you think 'you're the man' ;-)

haha anyways my top 5

Short Shorts Forever!

Post by Geoff WreckdoM »

Well, I think Pipe Fist had a strong song and deserved the win, so congrats. You were in my top three, but I wound up voting Leaf 62, whose song is still stuck in my head. That totally rocked. Thanks everybody for the reviews, can't believe we got compared to Tom Waites and Octothorpe, thats awesome. So is 17 votes, new high score, Whooo! This has been a most gratifying fight.

Thanks very much :) Yeah I think the vocals did need some more takes and that the chorus could do with a harmony in the upper register I think, we recorded this the day after an all day drinking session though so unfortunately my voice wasn't the best. Thanks for having faith though.

Maybe one day we'll get it all right in one go haha

Incredibly Brief Reviews:

15-16 Puzzle: This one of your better songs. I like it. You channeled TSI in the middle there.

Creep: Beh.

King Arthur: Steel drums! Oh man, I remember all that nonsense. Awesome.

Leaf 62: ohmanyouarehardcorexxx

The Likely Lads: Yawn.

The Loose Laces: You all know how I feel about this already.

Mediteraniem: This is fun in a kinda weird way. The chorus is awesome.

Pipe Fist: It's got some rhythmic hiccoughs. An interesting take.

Poor June: Hooray for walkdowns. Or something.

Sugar Pot Gamelan: This is totally cute and awesome.

Test Tube Steak: Long time no see. Have you been listening to Nobukazu Takemura? I think you have.

Wreckdom: This was way too normal.

How droll. It's still possible to find something boring and provide detail as to why...

Actually, without wanting to stoke any flame wars, or take sides,

Main Entry: bore·dom
Pronunciation: 'bOr-d&m, 'bor-
Function: noun
: the state of being weary and restless through lack of interest

A lack of interest would preclude having something to say, in this context? Or am I reading too much into the definition?

A great many things are possible. That has nothing to do with anything.

I will rephrase my previous point that you have overlooked: No one has to provide details as to why they think a song is boring.
