[Billy's Little Trip]

QOTD: not a lot of wildlife around here, but there is a local flock of green parrots that frequents our neighborhood. One morning I drove past the wire they were sleeping on and estimated about 300. Occasionally they feed on the seeds from the tress in our backyard.

I didn't know there were parrots in the US. Are they native, or is it a feral population?

Totally feral.

I see those when I'm down your way. Trips me out. I think I've seen full on Macaws too. I'll hear that parrot screech and sure as heck, it's a parrot. Must be the combination of above ground telephone wires, which Orange is full of, and huge eucalyptus trees, which Orange is also full of. Plus wild citrus everywhere, which Orange is also full of. It's pretty cool, really.

Oh, oops, I thought Ross was referring to the San Francisco parrots which Jack mentioned. Still, "The Parrots of Telegraph Hill" is an excellent documentary.

Cockys fly around in big gangs and make heaps of noise and break stuff. When I was a youngster, me and my mates would go on holidays driving around western NSW for a week or so - being noisy, causing trouble and breaking stuff. We developed a close relationship with the birds we saw on the way who seemed to be doing exactly the same thing (though they weren't drinking as much as we were). We became the Cockatoo Camping Crew - and had T-Shirts printed. We even made the Sydney Sunday paper one day. I'll see if I can find a copy and scan/post it.

There's also a flock in Long Beach, ranging from 2nd & Ocean in Belmont Shore down to the Peninsula. If it ain't a palm rat running along the power lines, it's one of them parrots.

There's actually a very good documentary about them, entitled "The Parrots of Telegraph Hill," oddly enough. The theory is that someone had pet parrots and got sick of taking care of them so let them out the window, and amazingly enough they thrived in the San Francisco climate.

Ooh, I gotta find this. We purposely walked the Filbert Steps and looked for the parrots when we were in SF in June. Saw them both awing and, er, atree and thought they were pretty cool.

I can't think of anything fun we have here in middle America. I see a Dan-O from Five-O once in a blue moon if that counts.

Cockys, lol. I've had several Parrots through the years including two cockys. A sulfur crested named Rocky and a Moluccan name Leyla. They were awesome, but so destructive I couldn't deal with it anymore. Before I gave them to my friend, they had chewed every inch of wood molding and trim in my house. Rocky could escape out of any cage. So I built them an out door aviary and specially design to stop him from getting out. He couldn't get out in the traditional manner, so he simply ate his way out the roof, lol. Bastard!

a couple of times, a deer, and twice i saw a fox in the backyard making strange noises.
other than that, just squirrels, rabbits, stray cats... and a crapload of crickets, they get into the basement somehow.
