This question is for a friend. I'm not familiar with Reason, so I can't really help him. He has Pro Tools, M-Audio and Reason. He can plug into his M-Audio with his bass, etc, and he can hear it fine with Pro Tools, but he says that he gets no sound when he tries to use Reason with Pro Tools. He uses a keyboard that hooks to the computer via USB which I think he used with Reason in the past. Is it a midi issue, maybe?
Is reason like Cubase or Pro Tools, or is it a sound FX type program? I've never quite understood what Reason is. If I knew, I could probably help him over the phone.

Re: Reason with Pro Tools
Reason is basically two things:
1. multiple tone modules (Synths, samplers, drum machines)
2. a sequencer for these modules
I don't know ProTools, but you can use a protocol called ReWire to use Cubase and Reason at the same time.
What is your friend trying to do ?

Re: Reason with Pro Tools
I believe he's trying to add tracks to Pro Tools from Reason, so I'm guess synth samples, not sure. But he gets no sound on play back, but he can hear his bass and vox that he brought in to the tracks via his M-Audio interface.
I'll find out more today and get back here.

Re: Reason with Pro Tools
In my limited experience with Cubase and Reason on the Mac, I have to make sure to start Cubase -first-, before Reason, in order for ReWire to connect Reason to Cubase. Is your friend launching ProTools first, then Reason? Also, in Cubase there's a special "Reason" window, which lets you decide which output channels from Reason you are going to route into Cubase. The ones you select show up in your Cubase mixer. In Cubase by default the 1st and 2nd output channels are selected, and routed to one stereo track. Maybe there is some equivalent setup in Protools that your friend needs to look at and make sure is configured properly? Also, there are preferences in Reason that he may need to make sure are set up right. If he looks at the Reason prefs it should say that it's in "ReWire slave mode" or something like that, when it's working. This article might help, though the versions of the software they're using are probably older than what your friend has:

Using ReWire should still be the same, even with newer versions of ProTools and Reason.

Re: Reason with Pro Tools
Ok, this is getting me more familiar with Reason, etc. I don't think he has ReWire, unless it comes with Reason. I'm guessing it doesn't, so I found a D/L link.

Re: Reason with Pro Tools
Rewire does come with Reason (being that it's a Propellerheads product), and damn but it is fun! Doing an audition for a local filmmaker's soundtrack and it's sweeeeeeet.

Re: Reason with Pro Tools
I just started using Reason 4. So far I haven't dug into it too much but it seems like the sample set that it comes with is even better than in v3. Plus the "Thor" synth is totally crazy looking.

Sounds like an on screen Casio. Be great when I decide to break into my hip hop career.

But you have to admit, those synth sounds are so sonically awesome and fat. Privately they inspire me to be dramatic. Maybe I need to stop fighting the power and give in to my synth desires.
