Re: connecting firewire without restart?
What's the exact scenario you're going through? I have a FireWire A/D device (a Tascam FireOne) and a Mac Pro and a MacBook and I don't have to restart my Macs to use for the FireOne to be usable. I do have to restart Cubase if I start Cubase before I've turned on the FireOne. I also have to launch the program Audio MIDI Setup (in /Applications/Utilities) to get the OS to switch the audio output to the FireOne every time, which is annoying. But no restarts for me. Do you have the latest driver for the Alesis?
Re: connecting firewire without restart?
sorry i wasn't clear. i don't want to just leave it on all the time because it gets really hot and i'd have to go through audio midi setup every time i wanna switch to the macbook's own audio drivers. i'd like to just be able to turn it off... and then later turn it on and have it recognized automatically. right now, if i turn it on, it doesn't even show up as an option under audio midi setup unless i restart. i guess if it sounds strange that i'd have to restart for this, i must have some sort of old firmware problem or something... but yeah.

Yeah, something isn't right if it's plugged it and turned on and isn't showing up in Audio MIDI Setup. Have you tried a different FireWire cable? Reinstalling the drivers? Those are long shots, but they're what I would try next.

I'm with Lunkhead, something isn't right. I have a G4 PowerBook and PreSonus Inspire 1394, which is recognized automatically when I plug it in, and I'm reminded that my setup has changed when I unplug it.

This could be a bus-power issue? Are you powering the interface from the wall, or from the laptop? (If laptop, plugging in the wall wart for the interface may take care of this problem.)
Re: connecting firewire without restart?
i updated the driver, my firmware was always the most recent, and everything's plugged in to power outlets. still not recognizing

I'm not saying every man who owns a Mac is gay, it's just that every gay man I know... owns a Mac.

We've an open marriage. I have two of each, and my wife has two macs, and on one she runs windows. And I won't get into the whole OLPC thing on a public board...
