T-Mobile G1

Post by Lunkhead »

It's official! I'm having a hard time getting a couple of the details I'm looking for, though. Does anybody have a link where they state definitely whether it has GPS or not? Also it looks like pre-orders are available only to current T-Mobile customers? That's kind of annoying. This phone is probably a motivator for a significant numbers of folks to switch (like me, I'm on Sprint at the moment), so it seems silly if they're not offering it to new customers right away.

Got mine tonight. Now I'm just waiting for my number to be switched over from Sprint before I can use it.

Oh, I didn't know there was a topic for this, or I would've spoken up.

I've had mine for over a week and I love it. The keyboard is great (reviews saying it's too low-profile are wrong), the notification bar is amazing, the apps are already extremely good (Jeff Hamilton's Video Player means I have a portable anime viewer), call quality is excellent, the connectivity with everything Google is perfect... I mean really, I'm in love with this phone.

I'm waiting for a decent unlocked Android phone to come onto the market. Either that or for Palm to finally release one of their new Linux-based phones. I'm still more or less happy with my iPhone but I kind of feel like there's some things which it could do a lot better, you know?

How's the calendaring? Does it sync with anything (e.g. Google Calendar, Plaxo, etc.)?

Unfortunately, AT&T is a bunch of stupid and I'm under a 2-year contract even though I bought my iPhone used and got my service with them completely unsubsidized (in fact I had to pay money to get a SIM with new service!), but really I was getting pretty sick of certain T-Mobileisms anyway and so if I'd just waited a couple months and gotten a G1 with them I'd still be stuck under a stupid 2-year contract. Although I think T-Mobile gets better service at my place too.

Anyway, due to Android's nature, I'm sure there'll be quite a few excellent Android-based phones on the market sooner rather than later.

I don't use a mobile phone - but I am about to commence a legal rumble against my previous landline provider.

Cocksuckers want to charge me a penalty fee for breaking our contract. The way I see it - they broke the contract by being cocksuckers.

I'm itching for a scrap. I am disputing roughly $350 of various fees they have sent me, that I have in return suggested that they jam up their arse.

I feel so alive!

Wow, contracts for landline service? I've never heard of such a thing.

I've got that bundle too, but no contract. In fact, the first 6 months of the land line was free to sign up and they give me 5 bux a month off my broadband if I keep the phone service. The only reason for my land line is for my arti-fax machine, pretty much.

fluffy, you have to have a Google account to activate the phone. It then automatically synchs your Gmail, Gmail contacts, and Google Calendar. It also sets up Google Talk for you automatically (and signs you in...). There is a dedicated app for Gmail, and a separate app for other POP/IMAP accounts. (The general mail app is pretty basic but serviceable.) The IM app supports Yahoo, AOL, and MSN IM, in addition to Google Talk, but it doesn't have plain Jabber support built in. Supposedly that's easy to create yourself if you're a l33t h4x0r since the Google Talk code uses a Jabber API (Smack). Someone has written another POP/IMAP client already that the author claims to be better than the one included with the phone. I haven't tried it yet. So far it seems like there aren't a whole lot of apps, but the number is growing steadily. It's definitely leaning more towards apps and less towards games so far, though. No one has written Tetris for it yet, for example (can you believe that?!).

Lack of Tetris is probably due to not wanting to be sued by Atari or whoever the hell owns the portable gaming rights these days. There's been some pretty major problems with that on the iPhone.

Does the Google App support work with Google for Domains? And does it support multiple simultaneous accounts?

Re: Domains, I don't know as I don't use that service. I haven't tried multiple Google accounts, but I don't think that's supported either. Hm, in fact I can't find anywhere to change the Gmail account that the phone is linked to...? That's kinda lame.

Ha, fortunately I learned of that bug the easy way, on Slashdot. I used that bug to launch telnetd on the phone then telnet into it from my Mac Pro and poke around a little. If I were more of a hacker that would have been more interesting to me, I suppose. Hopefully they'll push an update to fix those bugs soon...

Looks like I spoke too soon about Tetris. EA has released it for the G1, but since they want $7.99 for it and the Android Market currently only allows free apps, it's only available direct from www.eamobile.com.
