Mediafire offers free unlimited file hosting. Good for transferring large files to folks. The paid version lets you use direct hot links.

I think I need this

I am in the middle of a big fight with my previous internet provider and I now have no web space.

My new provider - telecom NZ doesn't do it.

Where can I get, say 50 - 100MB or so to put songs on from time to time to share, side-fights...etc so I can send links to people.

I have a lot of accounts on music sites like The Sixty One etc... - but they don't let you just send a link to a song

I am happy to pay whatever. I just want it easy and reliable.

Is Roymonds suggestion the go? Or does someone know something better?

There's a 10MB file size limit, and bandwidth limits that they don't publish (they'll just tell you/disable your site when you exceed it). So, for most SF needs, this is great. But for sharing source high res audio files, video, etc. this won't help you.

The google thing is good for most SF hosting, and personal/band website stuff. But it is limited to files < 10MB.
The mediafire site says unlimited filesizes, so sharing production files for collaboration should work well. Also for even larger files you mention, although connection status and bandwidth on either end will play a big part in that. We have had a bunch of audio/video up to 500 MB after SFL shows to edit so that could help out. But no, you can't host websites on it, nor direct link to media files for streaming, etc.

If you want to be a grownup and pay for your own hosting instead of feeling like the world owes you something, there are several low-cost options:

Dreamhost is $8/mo or so if you pay in two-year increments. Use discount code ILOVEPLAID and get a big ol' discount (which I see not a single cent of). Pretty reliable, and can be used for all your webhosting stuff. They also have one-click installs for many useful things like WordPress and Movable Type and so on. They have occasional outages but for the price it's excellent.

Amazon S3 is intended more for backend storage of web service assets, but you can also use it for generic file hosting. They charge a reasonable monthly rate for storage and then also charge you wholesale prices for the bandwidth you use (yes, it actually DOES cost money to serve up files). Another nice bonus is that if you want to distribute a huge file to a lot of people (e.g. a complete album or whatever), it has a built-in BitTorrent tracker so you can just link people to that and so you won't have to pay so much for the bandwidth.

Has anybody tried Bandcamp? I found it just now on waxy.org, which was linked from Todd McHatton's reviews for the current fight. It looks interesting, and I think I'm going to try it out.

Hm, Bandcamp looks neat, and the fact they've got a built-in revenue model makes it pretty interesting too. It certainly wouldn't hurt to have yet another distribution mechanism, at least.

It's a little weird that they only let you upload high-quality audio files (.wav, .flac). It froze up my browser for the duration of the upload, which took about ten minutes. I'm not sure I'll want to do this for a whole album's worth of songs.

I see how that could be a problem, but I think totally worth it since it insures that your songs are available at full quality. I mean this would take you a couple of hours to upload your album, but that isn't too much, it would probably take you longer to drive to the post office, stand in line, and mail a CD.

Also, you can always compress it with FLAC to speed it up 2-3x.
