Tuesday, Dec. 9th, 2008 (or: The Zoo)

Complain about your schedule. Apparently people like that sort of thing.

Yesterday he said:
Generic wrote:So. I finally got in touch with my local Zoo office, and managed to reschedule the interview as requested...........The new interview is tomorrow morning
Then later (today) he said:
Generic wrote:So yes, the interview was this morning. The interviewer told me that they waited until almost a half-hour past the scheduled interview time on Tuesday before giving up on me. I was maybe five minutes late, so "I'm thinking" maybe the receptionist mistook me for someone else?
He was 5 minutes late to his first interview, but they say he was more like 30 minutes late. Then Mr. Eric says "he thinks" it might have been a mix up.

Funny that we are even debating this as if Jon isn't even here....which he isn't at the moment.

No, it sounds to me like there was a huge mixup. Yesterday, when he got the interview scheduled for today, was already well after the half hour after his supposedly-missed interview on Tuesday.

This sort of stuff happens all the time when there's a lot of interviews and reschedules going on, especially when interviews are being conducted by people who aren't full-time interviewers. At my office we occasionally have weird stuff happen when there's 3-4 different interviews over the next week with different people scheduled to give the interviews, and if one of them gets rescheduled then sometimes things get confused.

Tuesday, Dec. 9, 8:25 A.M.
Jon shows up at The Zoo for his 8:30 interview. Finds the door locked.
Jon waits ten minutes.

Tuesday, Dec. 9, 8:35 A.M.
Jon goes over to the other building to ask the security guard why the door is locked, and the security guard tells Jon that the interview is in the latter building, but he'll need to call in and reschedule for "a more convenient time." Jon resists the urge to tell her that, seeing as he's there, now is a plenty convenient time.

Jon spends the majority of Tuesday and Wednesday trying to get in touch with The Zoo. Finally succeeds, Wednesday afternoon, in scheduling a second interview for Thursday, again at 8:30.

Thursday, Dec. 11, 8:00 A.M.
Jon shows up at the right building this time, and early.

Thursday, Dec. 11, 8:35 A.M.
The interviewer meets Jon in the lobby. Her first question is what happened on Tuesday. Jon explains that he showed up at the wrong building, but wound up in the right place no more than five minutes late. The interviewer explains that She normally gives potential new employees a 25-minute window, and claims that, as of 8:55 A.M. on Tuesday, Jon hadn't shown up. See above.

...

My theory is that when I showed up on Tuesday, the security guard thought I was someone else, someone who maybe had an interview scheduled for 8:00 or 7:30. Hence the guard told me to come back at a more convenient time, because she thought I was much later than I actually was.

So did you clear it up with the interviewer? She might think you were simply lying, and think you're unreliable.

I hope she believed me. I get the feeling that if she didn't, we wouldn't have gone through with the interview.

It's a fine line, trying to be assertive about stuff like that, while at the same time not coming off as too demanding or rude (especially as I'm interviewing for a job that requires a lot of grace while talking to angry customers).

She would have, even if she's already made up her mind right away. I always complete interviews when the candidate bothers to show up, even if within the first 30 seconds I can tell that they are a complete tool.

It's business, and professional courtesy, and also is a way of avoiding lawsuits.

re: "reading between the lines" - Well if you recall I was interpreting events in a way which were optimistic regarding what actually happened and giving Jon the benefit of the doubt, in the meanwhile before he actually posted a clarification.

re: bicycle - Neither, for now I'm riding my old folding bike. It sucks.

Ah yes, the old folding bike. I see people riding those around here. They always look like software writers.

Oh, I forgot to tell you, I was thinking about you yesterday, Fluf. I mean about your bike getting jacked. I just saw a story on the news yesterday about an 88 year old guy in Hesperia that just had his bike stolen. He rides 6 miles everyday, each way, to go visit his young hot 73 year old girlfriend. It was such a cute story and I felt so bad for him, I contacted my news station via the web and offered to buy him a new bike of his choice. I planned to buy a bike online that would be shipped to him along with an "uncuttable" lock. I had it all arranged and they emailed me back to let me know that the local bike shop in his town is giving him a new bike and that they had a number of people also offering to help him out. That made my day knowing that there are so many people willing to help out in these tough times.

Oh great! Thanks for letting the monkey out of the cage, Oats! Now we all know where Jon works! He's going to be devastated and most likely scarred for life. He's probably going to go on a hunger strike.....
........ and eat nothing but food for weeks!

Then more than likely he'll lock himself away in his room every night and not come out....
....until morning when he has to get ready for work!
.....at the ZOO!
....which is really AT&T!

Oats posted that because, yesterday, I announced in another thread that The Zoo finally gave me their formal rejection, five days late, and in light of that, I decided to go ahead and tell you guys that they're actually AT&T, to let Songfighters make their own decisions about how that reflects on the company.

So yeah, I don't work for them.

And yeah, I'm a little bitter about it.

The only reason I use AT&T is because I have an iPhone. As a customer I hate them (and I actually liked T-Mobile!), and it's completely unsurprising to hear how they treat prospective employees... about the same as trying to get through to their account support, really.

I think I know what happened, Jon; when they interviewed you, they noticed that you actually speak clear and fluent English, so they passed you over and gave the job to someone named Gurvindersingh Dahliwahl. (I had a Roger's Mobile account for a few years some time ago, and they are a subsidiary of AT&T, so I know what the phone support is like)
