I see how that could be a problem, but I think totally worth it since it insures that your songs are available at full quality. I mean this would take you a couple of hours to upload your album, but that isn't too much, it would probably take you longer to drive to the post office, stand in line, and mail a CD.

You're probably right, but is there a batch upload feature I haven't found? If I could just queue up twelve songs I want to upload, then go to the grocery store, that'd be pretty cool, but as it is, I have to babysit it to see when the upload is complete. And since it freezes my browser (I guess I'm the only one who experienced that problem, huh?), I can't just browse elsewhere online while it's uploading.

Oh well. Maybe I'll do one a day, then in a month I'll have both of my full albums up there.

No, they are working on the batch uploader.

I guess in my mind, you are watching TV or a movie while you upload the tracks. No big deal.

Bumping this thread - given the pace of change on the Internet, the hosting situation is probably all different than it was in January...

What are people using these days? Is Bandcamp still good? Are there any hosting solutions you'd particularly recommend to somebody who would probably be directing relatives and other technophobes to his songs on a regular basis?

I'd like to mention a few sites I've been using lately:

www.getdropbox.com This is a cool online storage space where you can share folders with other. BSS uses it a lot and I've found it works great on a number of projects if you need to share files.

www.mp3tunes.com This let's you upload mp3s and then access them on the web. There is also an iPhone app that lets you listen to your mp3s on the go.

www.muxtape.com You need an invite for this, but simple to create websites for music. Free I think.

Be well,
Ken

I just found Posterous, the most brilliant blog/hosting site I've seen. It's free and essentially unlimited. Just email stuff and it's posted automatically (you can also use a web form). It does smart stuff with pictures, links, MP3s, videos, etc. It automatically displays players, download links, embedded videos, display images that click to the source, etc. You can direct link to the files you post there, although the URL is huge, but whatever. It's also iPhone/mobile friendly.

Here's mine with a hosted MP3, an MP3 URL, and photo URLs.

It's free and insanely easy. Plus, you get a blog that can automatically update all your (or selective) social media sites, other blogs, etc. Oh, and when you want, you can configure it to use your own domain. Freakin!!!

Oh, and another thing...you can assign multiple contributors via their emails. WTF? Brilliant...

SoundCloud looks very useful for hosting tracks as you collaborate with people. It's free for up to an hour of tracks. You get an "in box", email notifications, and nice listings with players for all the tracks. You can limit who has access to the tracks, so this seems like a nice way to collaborate, with everyone posting tracks to one place. SoundCloud supports Mp3’s in any bitrate, 16 bit, 24 bit & 32 bit wav/aiff files in just about any samplerate, Flac, Ogg and more.
