January 16, 2009

It was a long day - things get tough near the end of a semester in high school. Especially trying ot keep momentum with the kids who have given up.

QOTD: What's the worst you ever did in school and why?

Layoffs suck. I've lost three people in the last couple weeks. Two more are on the short list. I will be soon enough. Should be an interesting month.

QotD: I think the day I passed out in grad school. I was over booked, working full time, school part time, fried and burnt out. I can't remember any other real bad days.

I suffered some serious senioritis in college. I wasn't planning on going to grad school, nor did I have any specific career plans, so I didn't particularly care about my GPA in that final year, just so long as I got that diploma in my hands at the end of the year. I still managed to do quite well in my English classes (within the major, though I'm positive I benefited at least a little from grade inflation). I took exactly one course outside my major in that whole year, and I basically treated it as though I were auditing it. Had some fascinating discussions in class, but I did virtually none of the homework, and phoned in my final paper something awful. Got the only D in my life, and I actually think the professor went easy on me.

I had a lot of fun senior year, though. With the way things have gone since then, I don't really regret sacrificing academic excellence in favor of making the most of the time I had left in college. I focused on doing things that made me happy with my closest friends, knowing we'd all go our separate ways at the end of the year.

God I miss them.

Dude, you're still in high school? You look like you're 97......and a half! Image
J/K....bff, lol. wtf?

QOTD: There were SO many fuck ups for me in every school I've ever been in. It was like I was the lowest common denominator test subject. It didn't matter how hard I tried, shit followed me. BUT, great stuff happened too, so I learned to look on the bright side. For some reason, anytime something bad happened, something good would happen, almost like clock work. The worse the shit, the better the good.
Example: A few days after I got caught accidentally catching our metal shop on fire, I got my first blow job at KFC at lunch the next day. SO worth the trouble I got in.

There is one that comes to mind that I still feel bad about. In 7th grade I snuck into my Dad's booze cabinet and stole some vodka. My friends and I started putting it in our grape drink at every break. We made it to strong and we didn't like it much, but our geeky little buddy Jeff McDougle seemed to love it and drank everyone's. We laughed at how awesome he was, which made him drink more. Well, he was looking pretty drunk by PE and we told him to chill because he was getting out of control, lol. After the next class word spread fast, Jeff McDougle puked all over the place in algebra! I was all like, uh oh, I'm fucked! Sure as shit, David Dornan narced me out. That fat bastard! So I got the riot act and suspended and all kinds of trouble from the peeps. The next day, David Dornan gave me a handle bottle of Bacardi that he stole from his Mom. Naturally I forgave.

You are so damned predictable, BLT.

I had one bad quarter, on purpose. It was the last quarter of my second year of college. I had been keeping my grades up (4.0, more or less) in order to get accepted into the architectural program. I had been accepted before the last quarter started. I had also started researching graduate schools, and almost all of them only wanted your grade point from the point you started you major program, so I could see that I had a quarter to burn. I took all fluff classes, and worked as a cartoonist for the school paper. I never went to a single class, but showed up for the finals and passed them. This got me a D in every class except one. It was a PDP-8 programming class, and the damned professor had the final on a day other than the one published. I had to go and introduce myself to him and beg for an incomplete. For some reason, he gave it to me, and I showed up at the end of the next quarter and passed the test. My other classes were Scandinavian History and Greek and Latin etymology. I have an uncanny ability to pass tests.

BTW - I guess my low point was trying to fail high school physics. It was some sort of rebellion against the teacher, who I felt was not addressing our needs. I did NOTHING! - she gave me a D.

It almost sounds too math-ey. And I'm terrible at math. I'll consider it though. :P

qotd: I've always done pretty well in school, but I sleep in class all the time. People get pissed off at me for beating them on tests and stuff when I'm never paying attention. Yay for me!

QOTD: I was a horrible, horrible student.

It started when I was in 2nd grade, and I decided that 2nd graders shouldn't be given homework, so I just didn't do it. It was also in 2nd grade where my class and the neighboring class were split in to better and less-better readers, and I was upset that I was with the better readers as they had more work to do. I never understood why smarter kids had to do more work. I always hated busywork. Most of the time I just wouldn't do it.

I was one of those students who was naturally smart, and didn't need to give his full attention to the teacher. The problem was the students around me suffered as I distracted them. In elementary school they solved this issue by isolating me. By the time Jr. Highschool hit I was reading fiction during all of my classes, and only occasionally looking up. None of my teachers ever had problems with this behavior on my part. (I got a little better about putting the book down in high school. In Jr. Highschool I had at least one occasion where my English teacher took the book away from me so I would pay attention in class.)

I never applied myself. I was lazy. I could get an A if I tried most of the time, but I was happy with a passing grade -- and I considered passing a D. I had a bad time sustaining any level of effort, as when I'd see a report card stating I was doing well in school, I would start doing less as I clearly was trying too hard. (What was my grade last time? Well, clearly I don't need to do homework tonight...)

I found myself in a "magnet" highschool once, where I could have learned a lot. However, by that time my school skills were so mucked up that I didn't do so well, and gave up half way through. I consider that the "year I slept."

I've been to some college. It was much better. Mostly because they don't usually bother with busywork. Homework really is optional if you can pass the tests. I like classes where there's one research paper and all your other grade comes from tests. Those are the best.

Hmmm, worst I ever did in school....

Wow, I was a completely different person back then so I have a laundry list from the mundane (school cutting) to the wacky (littering the school video yearbook with kids making out) to the dirty (sex in the stairwells) to the violent (a couple of fights, a couple of people with broken bones). And yet, somehow I was considered a good kid and graduated at the top of my class. Go fig.

Strange team name for a high school. Well, unless you went to Newton High.
