Okay, Hi, Hello
Hi, I'm Ethan. I make music sometimes and people have said it's okay? I dunno, it's gotten to my head, and now I've up and gone and wrote a song for this song fight. What a terrible thing! I play folk punk? That is what people have been calling me.
A spacey hello to you, Song Fight!
Oh, also "The Sky Looks Pissed" is a band name I just made up. I kind of like it. I usually use one of the following: Ethan, Flying Unicorn Ninjas, and 1141 in Poetry for a while there. And my friend and I's band is Wonder Nuns? Gosh, there are a lot. A proposed harp/guitar band is speculated as The Secret of Motionless Exercise. Band names are hard for me.

Re: Okay, Hi, Hello
Welcome - as someone who's had various friends through the years call their music folk-punk, anti-folk, etc. I am interested in what makes your folk punky and I look forward to hearing your entry.
I guess I am also required to say - please be awesome!

Re: Okay, Hi, Hello
I am pretty sure there is no such word as "I's". I admit, this is a tough one. What are the possibilities?
1. My friend and I's band is...
Yes, there is such an entity as my friend and I, and my friend and I can have a band, but the possessive just doesn't work that way. Would you say "I's band"? No. It would be "My band". Which leads us to:
2. My friend and my band is...
Well, now it seems like you have both a friend and a band, which is true, but not what you are trying to say, I don't think. How can we pull the friend into the band?
3. My friend's and my band is...
Close, but it could be that you and your friend each have a band. Not necessarily the same one.
4. My friend's and my's band is...
Double possessive. Don't even go there.
Let's try inverting it.
5. Me and my friend's band.
Oh boy. Now your are talking about yourself and your friend's band, which you are not necessarily a part of.
6. My and my friend's band is...
Oh wow. Unexpectedly, that almost does it. It works in every way, except that it sounds damned awkward.
I have almost become convinced that it can't be constructed this simply. Let's try expansion.
7. My friend and I have a band. It is...
Easy. Obvious. Perhaps too formal.
8. My friend and I have a band called...
I think that pretty much does it.
My work here is done. Welcome. Expect this.

Oh, but of course. It's just that in this time of text talk and leet speak, my literacy has inevitably lost a bit of its character. So, now I write like I have to explain things very slowly.
oh jeeze I am having a conversation about grammar with the admin. I feel under the gun.

Re: Okay, Hi, Hello
that doesn't matter anymore. public schools and the internet have killed grammar as we knew it. math, too. as long as you can quote Bright Eyes, and grow bangs long enough to be in your eyes, what else really matters.Spud wrote:I am pretty sure there is no such word as "I's".

Re: Okay, Hi, Hello
As you can tell, I have not given up. There should be a question mark at the end of that last sentence. The Weakest Suit wrote:that doesn't matter anymore. public schools and the internet have killed grammar as we knew it. math, too. as long as you can quote Bright Eyes, and grow bangs long enough to be in your eyes, what else really matters.Spud wrote:I am pretty sure there is no such word as "I's".
I asked my 11-year old daughter to evaluate your post. She noted that the sentence "And my friend and I's band is Wonder Nuns?" has at least three problems, two of which I did not bother to note, because I'm not, you know, a total asshat.
1. She had a problem with starting the sentence with "And".
2. I's
3. Why the question mark at the end?
BTW, her suggestion for fixing the sentence was this: "Wonder Nuns is the name of the band that my friend and I have".
My daughter attends public school, and spends a minimum of 2 hours a day on the internet, usually more. I am unconvinced that either are failing us.

Re: Okay, Hi, Hello
I thought it goes "my friend and I" if that is the subject of the sentence and "me and my friend" if it is another part of the sentence (for example, the direct object). Grammar, though, is not my strongest suit.Spud wrote:"Wonder Nuns is the name of the band that my friend and I have".

Maybe it actually is "The Wonder Nuns?". Like the band "Therapy?". Oh, bands with wacky punctuation, what has become of you?,;Spud wrote: 3. Why the question mark at the end?
