Or even try to anticipate what his song will sound like and see how close you can get. Or you can just try to see if you can get Jon Eric to turn the song off 1/3 of the way through.

Or you could just stalk Melvin.

Last suggestion: If you're listening to the mix loud while mixing (and who doesn't ), after the mix gels for you, turn the listening volume way down and adjust the levels on each track again for that lower listening volume. You might be surprised...

I know this and always forget. Then later, I'll hear my song quiet and cringe. Good tips, by the way. But I don't think Rone takes advice, he just gets defensive and continues down his path to superiority and greatness.

Oh goddamnit, no. I'm in a John Lee Hooker/Muddy Waters sort of mood for this fight (and yet I have no lyrics) Did just pick up a harp that blows E if I'm playing it cross, to go with the guitar... If I were to be Roneing (and why is that in my vocabulary?!? Insidious!) I'd break out the Yamaha DJX-IIb and make something at least as embarrassing as "Honeymoon in Polynesia". Again.

@BLT: Yeah, loud for the rough, quiet for the fine-tune, and then the loud sounds even better. As to Rone, well, he's got the doggedness, the insistent persistence that's necessary to be all 8 Mile or whatever-the-fuck his r^ole model is... oh good grief, I'm being encouraging, aren't I? Really, I'm being selfish here. I intend to enter this fight, and while I'm not the greatest at some parts of the SF unspoken contract (like reviewing), I do give each entry one full and complete listen (aka the first pass) paying complete attention. I'd like to hear a somewhat balanced product, yo, with an extremely low cringe factor. Besides, he has progressed/improved, even if it's at a geologic pace.

What the hell was I talking about? Glenlivet = fdrink... what ever happened to that Poor June character... I miss his ellipses...

@Rone: You need to arrange your life to make it to Spokane this year. Performing live is something you need to do for your... errr, growth. I'm totally serious here. p++ will back you (or do one of your songs in our set, with you on the mike, or something... we like to do at least one 'fighters cover each set/event, including them in it whenever possible). Also, "Insidious" would be a cool "album" title.

I don't think I'll be going to Spokane. It's a bit far for me to travel on my min wage job that they'd fire me from if I missed any days (meaning no vacation days.) Hell, they don't even allow sick days. If you get sick you have to come in to work and then they tell you to go home like 2 hours into your shift.

Anyway, I think it's kinda kewl that there might be multiple songs with my lyrics. And as far as fixing the vox... ack. Well Spud knows this because we've been PM'ing all day but I forgot to save my vox track and so I have a drum/bass beat track and a guitar track but no seperate track saved for vox. Meaning I can ether a) leave the song as is or b) Do a new vox track.

You can actually still change the volume of your vocal track. What you need to do is get each of your separate tracks, reverse the phase and then mix them in with the full mix. This will cancel out everything but your vocal track, which you can now feely adjust the volume of. Then add that track to your normal mix an you're set.

As for my song, sadly don't think it will be finished in time. Haven't quite gotten the hang of the guitar parts (some fast/akward picking there) and can't seem to keep on key with the vocals. Ah well, might submit a sub-par version and take the time to improve it later.

You could time warp faster to hit your key before you lay vocal tracks. I personally just rerecord my guitars when this happens. But I have also just went for it and sang the best I could to the key I recorded in. Sometimes it works, and other times it's a big fail. I had a review on one occassion from those 3 Italian girls (can't think of there names) and one said I'm standing on my tippy toes but just can't reach what I'm grabbing for on that top shelf, lol. The other one was my low range on "All We Could See At The Window". I can't remember what all was said, but it was in the realm of not quite pulling it off.
