Re: What are you listening to right now?
For the past few years I've seen the name shellac associated with other music that I like. Don't know much about them, but I just downloaded a few albums and THEY'RE GREAT! I'm having a hard time finding anything new (or old) that I like. Ever Since the melvins have teamed up with the band Big Business, their album "here comes the waterworks" hasn't really left my trucks cd player. it's pretty tasty.
oh, and as far as cake goes... comfort eagle definitely. Just because of "arco arena" and the title track "comfort eagle."

Shellac is one of Steve Albini's bands, right? I've heard a few of their songs and thought they were great, but I have a hard time tracking their albums down. The art is all hand-pressed, which I imagine makes mass-production difficult.

Love Shellac. It may never be main stream, but the rhythm riffs are groovin'. Kind of a guitar players kind of thing, I'm guessing.

Bass player for Yes' first solo album from back in the 70's. Found it at a flea market for $1. and it's one of the best albums i've ever heard... 5 songs, all incredibly epic.

Hoblit and BLT had some babies, with uncles Phil Redmon and Jute Gyte along for visits. They called their band the Whore Moans. Unrelated, the new Neko Case is perty tasty.

A c.layne marathon - this guy did a bunch of SF stuff, but I don't think he's around much these days. His albums "Shark Week" and "a feast of splinters" are incredible.
Then again, if you are ever wondering just what I am listening to, here it is.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
Last week I had The Hazards of Love, the new album by The Decemberists, on repeat in my car. It's dense enough to require repeated listens, but aside from a few standout tracks (the closing number, for instance, is amazing), the whole thing has left me a bit underwhelmed. It's practically a full-out rock opera, but I spent most of it feeling nostalgic for "The Island," a twelve-minute four-song suite from their last album.
That makes this the first Decemberists album I've ever felt this lukewarm about. Ah well.

Because it deftly combines five factors:
1.) Office humor that "everyone" can relate to
2.) Zombies (which have become something of a meme unto themselves these last couple of years... bonus!)
3.) Catchy Melody
4.) Technical profiency
5.) Genuine humor
