Well I'm glad people like my singing voice. I personally find it annoying. So I got two or so votes so far... I predict I'll come away with around 6 when it's all said and done. Reviews are helpful though. Keep them coming. Might do one of my own, but I'm afraid to piss people off.

Don't be afraid of what people will think of your reviews. You're entitled to your opinion, and review threads are a forum specifically for voicing that opinion. And we can always use more reviews (says the guy who flaked out on writing them two weeks in a row).

Actually, "Death Be Not Proud" made me think of the song "Death is not Peace", which is by one of my favorite songwriters, the unfortunately not-well-known Richard McGraw. So I guess I'm trying to say I liked the band title.

CLFPM = Composition, Lyrics, Feeling, Performance, Mixing/engineering. 0 to 3 each. The sum has arbitrary weighting in it. Without further ado:

Abominominous -- 12/15
C:2 (weird development), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:3, M:2 (vocals a bit buried, otherwise excellently crisp)

Andrew Reist -- 10/15
C:2 (would have enjoyed more variation in the arrangement), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:1 (the crunch sort of steals all the attention), P:3, M:2 (vocals a bit buried, crunchy rhythm guitar perhaps too crunchy)

Andy Sucks -- 10/15
C:2 (not much happening here. Nice songlet though), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:2 (somewhat weak vocals), M:2 (cheap-sounding reverb, lo-fi recording, otherwise not too bad, though the reverby guitar is a bit too present in the mix, particularly the higher notes, and the vocals are buried)

Caravan Ray -- 12/15
C:2, L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:3, P:3, M:2 (I think the guitar is a bit too reverby, rest is fine. A bit more power on the vocals?)

Chopped Liver Meat God -- 12/15
C:2 (not really much happening here), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:3, P:2 (vocals are inaccurate where I think they shouldn't be), M:3 (nice panning on the drums/percussion, cheap-sounding reverb on one of the guitars near the end)

Chthonic Chthock -- 13/15
C:2 (the speed changes seem a bit pointless or at least a bit extreme), L:3 (nice take), F:3, P:2 (higher notes in vocals sound a bit strained), M:3 (pretty hot mix but okay)

Cobalt Stomach -- 10/15
C:3 (cool arrangement, e.g. some of the backup vocals), L:0 (not yours), F:2, P:3, M:2 (cool synths, cool ambientness, clipping)

Death Be Not Proud -- 11/15
C:3, L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:3, M:1 (asymmetric vocal mix: most of the vocals are in one channel only; and perhaps a bit buried vocals. The mix is pretty busy in the mid-frequency range; try cutting a bit of mid from some of the tracks. Generally, corrective EQ might do a lot of good things here. The guitar playing the fourths is a bit too present).

deetak -- 11/15
C:3, L:2, F:2, P:2 (vocals are a curious mix of held back and strained), M:2 (vocals buried in some places, clipping)

Elaine DiMasi -- 12/15
C:3, L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:2 (some pieces of the vocals sound like you were up way too long or way too short before you recorded), M:3

FABULOUS PRUNES -- 2/15
C:0 (semi-random score. Mind the pun), L:0, F:0, P:0, M:2

Fartin' in the Club -- 4/15
C:1 (the things the synths play don't seem to fit together, repetitive, pointless?), L:0, F:1, P:1, M:1 (lots of harsh reverb)

Gnome Alone -- 8/15
C:1 (arrangement too sparse), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:1, P:2 (it's hard to classify this as singing), M:2 (A/C hum)

the Hinsdale Patent -- 13/15
C:2 (cool backup vocals in this arrangement, more buildup would have been cool), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:3, P:3, M:3 (really clean mix, good job)

Howl Down the Chimney with Todd McHatton -- 12/15
C:2 (something about the arrangement is too busy for my taste), L:3, F:2, P:2 (something is out of tune there, I think), M:3 (I think lots of vocals are hurting this, especially if they are reverbed. It's hard to tell what makes it mushy, though)

IndiAdamJones -- 12/15
C:2 (I like the last minute and a half or so best), L:2 (minus points for self-references, otherwise lots of fun), F:2, P:3, M:3 (stylish old-school reverb on some of the vocals)

Jake Lions Band -- 9/15
C:2 (more interesting than I thought but still too long), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:1 (vocal echoing of synths is pretty far off, other vocals aren't much better. It pains me to say this but the falsetto vocals are about the best thing in this, but some parts of that are pretty painful too), M:2 (do I hear pumping? I like the synths, when they're not giving me a headache)

Jan Krueger -- a rather spontaneous creation; more of an AAD song, considering the timeline. Written and recorded in four hours. 13/15
C/L:3 (otherwise I wouldn't submit it, would I), F:3 (that other life seems a lot more lively), P:1 (problems in vocal performances (I was curing out a cold. Still am. I was coughing a lot while recording) and big problems in guitar performances), M:3 (doubling works even better than expected)

John Kloberdanz -- 13/15
C:3, L:2, F:3, P:3 (powerful stuff! Awesome. The distorted guitar is a bit shapeless, sounds more like background noise than anything else. Try slightly harder distortion or a different amp or whatever), M:2 (way too much reverb on the guitar)

Kasper -- 11/15
C:2 (a bit more changes would have been great), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:3, P:2 (are those chorus backup vocals in tune? Otherwise cool), M:2 (the bass has the perfect place in the mix, vocals are a bit buried at times. Perhaps compress them a bit more)

Larry Knox -- 11/15
C:2 (nice arrangement, stylistically not my kind of thing, L:2, F:3, P:2 (strainy vocals), M:2 (thin vocals, those lots of phaser/wah things are a bit much for me, pretty harsh fade at the end)

LML -- 13/15
C:3 (I didn't think I would but somehow I like this), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:3 (slightly nasal vocals), M:3 (vocals in verses feel a bit distant compared to the rest of the mix, try tweaking EQ/levels. Lots of silence at the end!)

Lucky Spoon -- 14/15
C:2, L:3 (the phone call in particular got me), F:3, P:3 (pretty nasal vocals, that's not necessarily a bad thing though. Vocals are actually pretty good), M:3

MC Milk Plus -- 12/15
C:2 (more fun than it should be, almost), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:3 (interesting vocals), M:3 (slight plosives)

Melvin -- for being late, you only get a brief review. 14/15
C:3, L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:3, P:3, M:3

Night Elf Mohawk -- 8/15
C:0 (way too long, nothing's happening, weird arrangement), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:2, M:3

Paco del Stinko -- standard fare, sort of. 12/15
C:2 (nice progressions as usual; some phrases don't make much sense to me), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:3, M:3

Pathetic Wannabees -- 9/15
C:2, L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:1 (lots of weird things are bleeding into the recording, bad vocal timing, mediocre vocals), M:2 (phasing much?, clipping)

Ross Durand -- 14/15
C:3, L:3 (I want to join your religion! Seriously, excellent martyrdom thingy. Good thing I didn't implement this idea), F:3, P:3, M:2 (guitars are a little bit boomy, perhaps)

The Sky Looks Pissed -- 10/15
C:2, L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:2, P:2 (backup vocals are way out of tune, somewhat boring guitar playing), M:2 (vocals are a little bit buried, glockenspiel too present in the master mix)

SomeGuyCalledNoel -- 11/15
C:2 (too little happening too late, e.g. two-part guitar only after the song is pretty much over), L:2, F:2, P:2 (some of the vocals are a bit weak), M:3 (pretty low bitrate, though)

Todd McHatton -- 14/15
C:3 (nice rhythm in some of the piano playing), L:* (not rated; post your lyrics next time to change that), F:3, P:3, M:3 (plosives; have you tried cutting away the low end of the vocals? I do that a lot these days)

The Weakest Suit -- 10/15
C:3, L:2, F:1 (sorry, this sounds more mangled than anything else), P:2 (I think. It's hard to tell), M:2 (the effects don't make it better. Vocals hard to make out)

Bonus review(ish): Jon Eric -- 13/15
C:3 (more arrangement would have been ace), L:3 (I can't quite figure out what you're saying but you're being so nice about it that I have to like it), F:2, P:2 (strained vocals in places; falsetto near the end isn't that great), M:3

Voting for: Chthonic Chthock, John Kloberdanz, LML, Lucky Spoon, Melvin, Ross Durand, the Hinsdale Patent, Todd McHatton. And myself.

I posted the lyrics just now. Glad you enjoyed it "somehow". Yeah I hate my vocals. But nasal I have always been and will always be unless I take some singing lessons. I also sound whiny if you haven't noticed. Part of my charm I guess. Thanks for the review though.

See, it's called a metaphor.

Anyway, thanks for listening.
I thought it was pretty good. It's just that it grossed me out and the green eleven line cracked me up. I found myself laughing at the lines and delivery, but wasn't sure if I should be laughing.

Grading goes from 1 to 5. Five meaning perfect, and 1 meaning I couldn't finish the song. Hope I don't piss anyone off. You all get an A for effort! :D

Abominominous 4/5
Nineties vibe 100 percent. Sounds like it should be played in a dark club. I like how this song feels, I don't feel the need to comment on the vocals as I was more focused on the feel. I really liked this one.

Andrew Reist - 3/5
I couldn't understand the lyrics very well, so it was hard to follow along. Guitar was a little distracting but it reminded me slightly of Ween... don't know if you want to take that as a compliment or not. I mean it in a good way.

andysucks - 2/5
Wanted to like this one really badly. Fun riff, but it just doesn't feel complete. Vocals sound apathetic, makes me a little uneasy. It's the skeleton of a good song, but it's not 100 percent what I wish it was.

Caravan Ray - 3/5
Bongos. Gotta love them. Interesting composition, reminds me of Jack Johnson. Mellow and charming, but doesn't make too much of an impression on me.

Chopped Liver Meat God - 2/5
I wanna rate this on the beginning alone. You had me at the Thriller cover and then lost me when you started singing. Damn good idea though.

Chthonic Chthock - 3/5
I like this. Reminds me of the Power Rangers. Is that good? I don't know. I give it a three.

Colbalt Stomach - 2.5/5
Is this NIN? You had me going for 10 seconds and then the gothic vox began. Damn... great arrangement though for most of the song. I can't just give this a 2 so I give it a 2.5. I thought of taking it away because of the long and strange vox close to the end. But yeah. 2.5

deetak - 3/5
I listen to indie enough that this song didn't bother me. I don't know how anybody else could take it though. But yeah I give it a three just for the bravery involved.

Elaine DiMasi- 3/5
Female singer! Yay! Reminds me of a children's song. Maybe I've been listening to my nephew's cds too long. But children's music isn't bad though. You hit the notes right. So I give a 3. Uh huh.

FABULOUS PRUNES - 1/5
Am I listening to someone who just got a new synthesizer?Would be great for a 60's space movie sound track though.

Fartin' in the Club - 2.5/5
If I was into Trance/house/whatever this is I would like it. But I'm not. So I give it a 2.5.

Gnome Alone - 1/5
Lyrics are interesting. But work on it. You have talent there... but you could have tried a little harder. Just a little.

The Hinsdale Patent - 4/5
Ooh studio magic. Well produced, try to put some more mmph into your singing. Feels a little empty. Gets a 4.

Howl Down the Chimney with Todd McHatton - 2/5
Man I wanna like this song just because of the harp sounding backgrounds. But Just doesn't do it for me. I give it a 2.

IndieAdamJones- 1/5
What...? Nasal spray? I can't listen to this whole song.

jake lions band - 1/5
What... is this? I can't listen to this whole song. Ow. I'm sorry but 1 out of 5.

Jan Kruger - 4/5
You're all good but you're a little off key. But it's a pain in the ass to be in tune so I sympathize. 4 out of 5.

John Kloberdanz - 5/5
Listening to Horse With No Name lately? But vocals are wow. Perfect score. Got my vote.

kasper - 4/5
I like the guitar. If I was really sad I'd be listening to this on repeat. Hmmm. If I were a 17 year old teenage boy with a broken heart I would be jamming with this on my ipod.

larry knox - 1/5
Ow. Work on staying in tune.

LML - 0/5
I suck. Let's move on.

Lucky Spoon - 3/5
Interesting but... I'm unsure if I like this. Don't make the weird drums a habit in future entries and you'll get my voice next time. Rap reminds me of 90's environmentalist PSA's. Made me laugh. Though.

MC Milk Plus- 5/5
English rapping. Yes. More of this in the future.

Night Elf Mohark- 1/5
Erg. Uh... I can't listen to it. Maybe I missed something great but songs usually involve singing... right?

Paco de Stinko - 4/5
This sound is so early 90's. I give it a 4.

Pathetic Wannabees - 2/5
I bet you had fun making this song but I didn't have much fun listening to it. Lo-Fi is fine... I mean I'm the # 1 fan of it... but it's too muffled.

Ross Durand - 4/5
I want to steal your guitar skills. Gilligan's Island. Narrative. 4/5.

SomeGuyCalledNoel - 4/5
Death Cab For Cutie could have made this one. Cute and endearing. I don't care what people say. I give you a 4. And a hug.

Todd McHatton - 3.5/5
I enjoy the piano. Arranged nicely. Very indie. I'm gonna be looking for you in the future.

The Sky Looks Pissed- 2.5/5
Singing will improve over time with effort. Lyrics are very Juno Soundtrack. Ish. 2.5

The Weakest Suit - 3/5
6 Pence None The Richer with a male singer. Get a good compression mic. Lyrics are pleasant.

Did I get everybody? Tell me if I didn't. First time reviewing people. Return the favor por favor. I doubt these were helpful to anyone since I'm not very knowledgeable about recording or music production but that's my opinion and blah blah blah. I suck. The end. John Kloberdanz you got my vote.

Hey LML, thanks for your (so far one) vote! I think it's cute, and I don't even need to pander to you...I would suggest you vote early and often (for John Kloberdanz) but that wouldn't be in the spirit of songfight!

A Pathetic Wannabee here, While our exact recording technique is a secret sauce we do record pretty much live, with a bit of pixie dust sprinkled on. The lyrical content is purposely cloaked and is only understandable with the purchase of the official PW secret decoder earbuds. Please send cash (and lots of it) to Pathetic Towers and we will send your earbuds as soon as we figure out technology past 8tracks.
We do have tons of fun and shun.

I think Jack Johnson is good.
He plays a particular style of music very well.
The Curious George movie wouldn't be as good without him.
He records in a 100% solar powered studio.
The man's not afraid to be barefoot.
There's nothing wimpy about being mellow.

You guys are being internet.

Re: Like a pair of sunbathing mambas (Green Eleven reviews)

Post by Reist »

Reviews. Do I like or not? Yes=I'd listen to it again. No=I'm not touching it again. Votes are noted.

Abominominous - No. It's interesting, has good production - but doesn't engage me in the way I feel music should. Would it rock live? Probably not.

Andrew Reist - Not my tightest performance or mix, but I feel like it has more energy than anything I've submitted to SF.

Andy Sucks - No. Guitar is semi-engaging, and vox fit the chill atmosphere, but I don't enjoy this.

Caravan Ray - Yes. But you deny a Jack Johnson influence? This sounds straight off the curious george sountrack. Doesn't blow me away, but it's pretty chill man.

Chopped Liver Meat God - Hell no. I don't think I can deal with this kind of plagiarism ... it's like kid rock man. If I could give this a negative vote, I would. Is this LoO? Cause you can do better, man.

Chthonic Chthock - Yes. This is sweet. Kickass even. Drums are good, but the crash is too far forward in the mix for it to sound real. Forgive me if they're real - either way they sound pretty solid. This is like the theme song for a cartoon I'd watch in elementary. I give it a hearty VOTE!

Cobalt Stomach - No. It's way too long, vocals are really weak. Peace.

Death Be Not Proud - Yes. Haha, cheesy snare. One of my weaknesses. Vox too low in the mix. Pretty solid songwriting. You gotta get some real drums and some mixing lessons to showcase this songwriting though. No vote, but the writing's good enough that I'd listen to more of your music in a heartbeat.

deetak - No. Do you take yourself seriously when you sing? Because it sounds like you're mocking your voice out of self-consciousness. Decent writing, but it's pretty boring.

Elaine DiMasi - Yes. Chill, voice a bit flat sometimes, and some weak notes when you get down in your register. It's good, but I'm not voting for it because of the forced nature of some rhymes, and the lack of variation.

Fabulous Prunes - No. Are you wasting my time on purpose? I could be studying or something. Not fabulous, by the way.

Fartin' in the Club - No. The title wasn't fartin in the club, it's green eleven. Holy hell, people. This is why I don't review songfight anymore.

Gnome Alone - No. I don't know what you were going for here, but either you step it up, or you step down. Sorry.

The Hinsdale Patent - Yes. Vox painfully loud and unenergetic sometimes, but the backing guitars sound so good that I can't help but be intrigued, even if it's too long. I'll give it a VOTE, since I'd like to hear more of those.

Howl Down the Chimney with Todd McHatton - No. If I was still in my genesis phase, I'd probably enjoy this. Vocals don't sound serious. Believe what you sing, mang. Even if it's psychedelic you're going for.

IndiAdamJones - Yes. Long intro, lyrics are funny, but the rap parts piss me off. This is more genuinely psychedelic when the guitar parts get going than Todd McHatton. I thought I hated this, but it turns pretty sweet once those guitars get going. Advice - ditch the rap stuff, and stick with the music that you're good at. I give it a VOTE, as long as you promise to stop rapping. :P

Jake Lions Band - No. This makes me mad. The synths at the start are alright. That's it, I can only handle like 30 seconds of this. Don't do this to me ever again, thanks.

Jan Krueger - Yes. Nice and pretty. I keep forgetting you're german, but I hear the accent here. It'd get a vote if the vox were stronger and more passionate.

John Kloberdanz - No. Sounds like a case of immature songwriting. At least you've got confidence in vocals, I'll give you that. But no, I don't enjoy this.

Kasper - Yes. Weak vocals. Nice guitars, though. Haha, I relate with that angsty sad love stuff, so at least the lyrics work for me. I'll give it a VOTE because it connects with me pretty thoroughly.

Larry Knox - No. Solid backing music, poor vox and not amazing songwriting. Proof that production isn't everything.

LML - No. Not bad, your voice is good, but that shaker is pretty intrusive. The whole thing's a bit repetitive. It's borderline enjoyable for me, to be honest. I'd dance to it.

Lucky Spoon - No. Dude, this reminds me of banjo kazooie. Harmonies are kickass, but I'm not so big on the environmental message - I'm from alberta, keep in mind. I liked it until the white guy rap came in. Sorry, no vote.

MC Milk Plus - Yes. Haha, I always love your stuff. NOTE FOR OTHER RAPPERS AT SF!!!! Listen to the wordplay, and take note. Love it. VOTE.

Melvin - Yes. Even though it's not your best, I still am intrigued. No vote, since you don't sound like you care at all about it. I guess it's like that once you reach the top, right?

Night Elf Mohawk - No. Are ... you serious? Keep this shit to yourself. Or put it on myspace or something.

Paco Del Stinko - No. Guitars are sweet, snare sound isn't my style. Chorus is sweet, but I'm getting the feeling that a lot of your music sounds the same. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe it's your style, but I'd be pumped to hear you branch out and do a different style.

Pathetic Wannabees - No. Sounds like you guys had fun. But did you have to sent it in?

Ross Durand - Yes. Finally someone with good guitar tone! Hooray! But holy crap guys, do you all care about the environment this much? It's pretty standard folk stuff, but I can dig it. VOTE.

The Sky Looks Pissed? - No. Weird vocal stylings, but it works. When the vox follow the chords so closely, I just assume you haven't written a lot of songs. This is alright, but I wouldn't listen to it again.

SomeGuyCalledNoel - Yes. Your sheer melody-writing skill always amazes me. I'm jealous. No vote until you can polish up the mix - a clean mix and guitar tone are pretty much required for this style, in my books.

Todd McHatton - Yes. So you entered this twice? It's alright, and has interesting production, but the truth is I wouldn't listen to it again, mostly because of a few sloppy harmonies and weak melody in the verses. Tighten those up and this could be really awesome.

The Weakest Suit - Yes. Man, this always frustrates me about you. I love your songwriting, I like your voice, but your production is so lo fi that there's no way I'd listen to it again. Are you just using these as demos, planning to record it well someday? Because your songs deserve better treatment than this.

Verdict:
As usual, three or four winners, some decent stuff with terrible vocals, and some really awful stuff. Got a question though - if I feel obligated to review when I send in a song, but I have to sort through this much garbage to find a few good tunes, is it wrong for me to stop participating in the review threads? Because there's a lot of crap. And the people submitting obviously know it's crap.

Given the vast outcry for our lyrical content we have checked with the Pathetic Management team and our Pathetic Lawyers they have approved the release of the following. Please eat this message after viewing it. Bongo, Pathetic Musician.

Green Eleven

I've rolled the dice
I've tried Black Jack
Been on the street
came crawling back

It's a brand new game
My Offense' de Tet
A special twist
on wheel roulette

[chorus]
To hell with number seven
Lay it on Green Eleven
Lucky like Andre Previn
Put it on Green Eleven

What the hell's Green Eleven?
Some say there's no such thing
But Kermit says believe
Close your eyes and sing

It's likely I'll lose
But what if I win?
Every number's gonna be green
All your virtues will be sin

[chorus]
To hell with number seven
Lay it on Green Eleven
Lucky like Andre Previn
Put it on Green Eleven
