Here are some quick ideas:

A little early for beach weather, but Montauk(eastern end of Long Island) is pretty nice for a visit, and May is early enough not to get caught up in too much traffic, etc. The ocean, small town feel, sand dunes, and very comfy Bed & Breakfasts can relax a stressed-out 4 year old no problem.

The Catskills (north of NYC) are beautiful rolling hills (flat-landers call them mountains) with pretty wonderful scenery, hikes, B&Bs, etc. Consider the Mohonk area near New Paltz, but find a B&B rather than pay resort prices at Mohonk Mountain House. The views, hikes and eats are great around there.
thanks - yeah, that's the sort of thing i'm looking for. Those are the areas I was thinking of, but I had no idea where to start looking. I will investigate.

My sole knowledge of NY pretty much comes from watching Seinfeld - and I remember episodes talking about going to the "Hamptons" for the weekend. I looked up where that was - it looks expensive (is the Montauk you mention Roy part of the "Hamptons" - or is it different?)

And as Hinc suggested, Sth Jersey - I was looking up Cape May last night - is that what you mean?

We might need somewhere we can get a train/bus to. I'm not sure if I'm really brave enough to attempt the whole driving on the wrong side thing. I have done it in New Caledonia, but I'm guessing that the traffic on small Pacific islands may be slightly different to New York.

Actually, don't I recall you posting photos from Ireland Roy - do you drive much when you go to "lefty" countries?

It's different. Farther out, less ritzy. You can take a train there, BTW (Long Island Railroad).

Yes, I can drive on either side. It takes a few minutes, but it's almost like a switch for me, just toggle it "left" or "right" and I'm off.

There's a sweet band stand in Prospect Park (Brooklyn) that gets little use. What about a Saturday or Sunday picnic/performance, rain or shine? All acoustic with lots of wine. It's in a beautiful spot and I'm sure we'd attract lots of passers by.

That's a consideration and definitely could be fun. An earlier little show, a joint trip to Manhattan, some dinner and then the big show at Sidewalk.

We could always see about getting a parties permit. http://www.prospectpark.org/parties_permits/permits

Something to think about.

I thought the link would lead to a 'nevada'-style jpeg saying 'DON'T!' :) Sadly, it's more likely to be like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skU-jBFzXl0 Though at least my hair isn't that long.

Meant to say - for Brooklyn Park thing, I can do Saturday OR Sunday, if it's lunchtime. I would have to head off for the work do around 3pm. Sunday i need to find some practice time with Bill and Roy, but we can work around other things, I'm sure.

Yup, that was the next move. I've left a message to find out if it's available that weekend, and will submit the form based on the team's response (Sat or Sun?).

I'm thinking Sunday, so it's like a total Songfight Sunday. Like I said: Prospect Park show/ a good meal/ Sidewalk show.

A Sunday event works best for me and my droogs. We might stay in New Haven with friends (and book a Saturday show if we can find one), and then head into NYC early and out late.

I told some friends about the potential early Sunday event and there was some definite appeal. Good idea Roymond.

Sunday day event would definitely be awesome. Then I'd probably get a late-night train back to Boston instead of 3am(then I'd actually make my 8am class too, woo!)

I haven't done any new SF material in a bazillion years, so I wouldn't play the evening thing for sure. A low key acoustic thing during the day I could probably do though. I am not bringing a guitar. Someone bring a lovely guitar.

M is now advocating that I drive to NYC for the show in case I have to leave unexpectedly. Is there parking near the venue? M's brother said he thought the area was relatively safe. Also, Niv, if you want a ride into town or something I'll be going past your area, I think.

The Music Pagoda (which is what I found out it's called) is not available on the 17th. However, the Oriental Pavilion/Concert Grove is :) I am sending in the application for Sunday 5/17, noon - 6:00 pm.

I've been lamenting the fact that I can't come to this show (it's a Sunday night and I can't miss work the next day). But a Sunday afternoon acoustic thing in the park? I think I can do that! I'll let you know for sure as we get closer to the date.
