A Popular online encyclopedia says:

"Digital clocks and computers commonly display 12 a.m. for midnight. While that phrase may be used practically, it helps to understand that any particular time is actually an instant. The "a.m." shown on clock displays refers to the 12-hour period following the instant of midnight, not to the instant itself."

Silly Nur Einers.

Non-optional Challenge: Song must include (human) whistling

It depends on whether you are talking about a one-minute period of time or the instant that minute begins. In my mind, 12am does in fact exist for exactly one minute, and that minute is the minute immediately following midnight.

I look at it the same way with respect to the fight deadlines. The stated time is 9:59am, but I feel that 9:59am is not over until it is 10:00am, so I don't reject any entries that come in during that list minute.

Standard Time, not daylight savings time? so the deadline is really 8 pm by my current clock? I assume you meant Daylight savings time.?

[I'm assuming the deadlines are actually daylight time - and no - I am not worrying, or trying to eb a genuine pain in the butt - I just enjoy a little meaningless technical blabber.]

or 20 April at 4PM EDT NZST

Funnily enough, another area also on NZST is the New Zealand Antarctic Territory, otherwise know as the "Ross Dependency".

I think the a.m. controversy is about midnight, not 12. Midnight occurs at the moment the clock strikes 12, it doesn't last for the 12:00 a.m. minute. It doesn't have a duration at all. "12 midnight" is redundant except to differentiate it from that other 12.

I'm sure this does nothing to clarify anything relevant. You're welcome.

I did, but I didn't want to say anything because I usually send mine in after the list minute.

It is a strange way of writing it, but I don't think there is an error there. He is referring to the minute after the deadline passes. This is not the last minute, that was the miinute from 9:58 to 9:59. He is referring to the minute after the last minute. I guess he must have a list of various sumbission rules documeted somewhere, which is why he refers to this minute as the "list" minute.

Indeed, Mr. Ray. Thanks for helping to clarify. However, it's even simpler than that. It's the minute which is listed on the front page as the deadline.

In regards to the confusion about what exact time the deadline is, I would like to add that I actually own the domain 12midnight.com, and I agree that this a confusing topic and it is good that is was discussed and clarified.

Last year there was some controversy because after less than 25 songs were submitted for Round 0, I suggested we make Round 0 Round 1 instead. It seems like a big waste of time and effort for everybody to submit and judge the songs if everybody in the field is going to get through (which happens if there are less than 25 entries). Last year, the powers that be said that sounded like a good suggestion, but it was too late to do it because the entries had already beeen submitted. So, I formally submit this proposal now before it is too late.
