Got the album a few weeks ago and have had it in the car ever since. At first listen I thought "hmmmm...same old Green Day" - but a few more listens and this really started to grow on me. My opinion now is that this album is quite wonderful.
My initial disappointment was in that they are still using that 3-piece-pop-punk-sound - which, as good as Green Day are at it, a little bit goes a long way. But this seems a much more complex album than they've ever done before - and to achieve that, while still sticking to the sound that made them famous - I think is quite an achievement. Anyway - this album still gets better every time I listen to it - that's a true sign of a very good record.

For a Green Day album, I found the writing to be surprisingly rich, and the longey-long songs the best on the disc. Of course, the rock-solid production doesn't hurt either... very good sounding record.
To hear Green Day reeeally stretch, check out The Network. It's like the 2nd coming of Devo...very cool.

don't know i digged the second single...15-16 puzzle wrote:The first single was a fun song. The second one sounds boring, like something the Gin Blossoms did after they kicked out the alcoholic who wrote all the good songs. The longy-long songs I downloaded from the internet sound like a bunch of half-thought-out ideas stitched together.
and i thought the guy that wrote the good songs for gin blossoms killed himself?...

I've been listening to this album for the last few weeks now.. and I love it. It blows me away how much parts of tunes sound so much like other tunes.. I wonder if it's on purpose? "Holiday" sounds so much like it belongs on London Calling, "Blvd of Broken Dreams" reminds me of either an old Judas Priest tune that I can't recall, or "How soon is now" (Smiths), "Give me Novocaine" starts out like Bullet the Blue Sky minus the flams... Extrodinary Girl reminds me of a ton of stuff! But "Whatsername" is the most blatant. I don't know alot about mashups but sing "One Headlight" by the wallflowers juxtaposed with this track..
None of this annoys me, I think it's pretty cool.. Dana made a comment that the album had a very familiar, but not in a boring way, sound to it.

I loves me American Idiot, the album. And I also like the single by the same name, mainly because I've only ever really heard it as part of the album (I don't listen to the radio, it is evil). If you know the music from Jesus Christ Superstar, then you are probably as amused as I am.
Also, it totally rocks. It is tied with Add's "Divider (why are you doing this)" for my personal Awesomest Album of the Year-Like Thing Award, which is a prestigious award, I assure you.

Also, it is lots of fun to bop along to. Both albums, I mean. I'm done now.
