8-3-09 (The Greatest Hits Question)

Post by Niveous »

Gosh, what happened to the Daily Roll Call. Well, I'm here and for the next few days (at least) I'm gonna try and toss up some questions and generate some conversations. But first, the Daily Roll Call part.

DRC: I'm doing okay. Been kinda depressed lately because of all the divorce stuff and the life changes that surround it but I'm surviving. Trying to keep myself positive and busy.

QotD: We may have done this before but I think it's worth a second look/ a look from others.
If you were asked to put together a 10 song Greatest Hits album of your work, what would be on it?
(Include links if at all possible)

Then after you people start answering this question, others can answer this supplemental question:
Are there any songs that you disagree with on their list/ would switch on their list?

Hm. Interesting question, seeing as I'm currently putting together an album, and for the sake of unity, I have to exclude some of the songs that I believe are my best. Still, the new one will be a strong selection of songs, but if I had to pick my ten best ever, they'd be as follows (in no particular order):

1.) Violet Wants it Her Way (studio version ft. Glenn Case)
2.) Back from Juvie (studio version)
3.) Schadenfreude (The only recorded version so far)
4.) Phantom (full band version)
5.) Say the Word (studio version)
6.) Waiting for the Other Show to Drop (demo version)
7.) What a Horrible Thing to Say (studio version)
8.) St. Expedite (New version)
9.) Gas Tank (studio version)
10.) Maritime Winds (new(er) version)

drc: Today I learned that naked mole rats, along with their distant cousins the Damaraland mole rat, form eusocial colonies, meaning that like many insects they have designated breeders, workers, and soldiers. I found that interesting enough to share.

qotd: I think I already did that (okay there's 11 songs on there so just remove Convalescence or something?)

Well maybe not. More like, in no particular order:

1. Run Faster
2. Gin or Ginseng (I really gotta get around to recording it someday)
3. Sunny Again
4. Rhymes with Lucia
5. Fool in the Middle
6. tw3rp
7. Bad Cat
8. Night Terrors
9. Baby, Be Quiet
10. Sorry to Inform You

Incidentally, one thing I noticed at Songfight Live in Spokane was how so many of the songs were unfamiliar to me, even those which everyone else seemed to know by heart.

So c'mon, everyone, please participate in today's QotD! I'm going to make playlists of these and listen to them all

If I were to pick 11 of my songs, to re-record and remix and get professionally mastered - then package into a CD that will hopefully be finished before the end of August, assuming I hear back from the dude at the studio in a few days - then the track list would probably look a little bit like this:

1. Sleeper
2. Don't Break My Heart Again George Lucas
3. Clause 5 Sub-paragraph b)
4. So Blue
5. In The Ditch
6. Control Yourself
7. Under The Horse
8. Pencil Me In
9. Sugar Shaker
10. Get A Life
11. Moonshine

Though I would probably change the titles of a few of them

Well, from Songfight! proper, it might look close to this. a;though certainly subject to change.

Big Success
Kim Deal
Terror In Tiny Town
Ignorance Is Bliss
Beauty is a Burden
Cryptic Comment
A Scary Thing
Back From Juvie
Half a Million Nerds
Outside Paradise

I might add Sister Cocaine from Nur Ein a year ago. Funny, I have thought of recording backing tracks of songs I like and doing live vocal and guitar as a video taped 'concert' or to do an album like Jon and CRay. Could jump off of this list.

Good list, Charles. Glad to see "So Long, Atticus" and "Troublemaker" on there. I'd have wanted to see "Foam Rubber" and "Sunny Again" on a King Arthur's Greatest Hits Collection as well, and I probably would have cut "WTF" and "Lavender Splendor" to get 'em in there.

Thanks for adding those links, Generic. I was going to do the same thing.

I may have been the one to ask this question but I have found it hard to answer it. For me, the issue is rthat over the years I have become much more focused on being a songwriter. And then there's all of the collaborations I've done.

So in the end, I've chose my greatest hits abum based around songs I wrote. These are my lyrical faves.

1. "God's Thumb" - Billy's Little Trip f/ Paco del Stinko
2. "I am the Color & Shape" - Zinkline (I can't seem to find a link for it!)
3. "Overexposed" - the Cow Exchange
4. "Niv" - Loiano (note: I would rename it for my album)
5. "Don't Think I Don't Miss You" - X-Tokyo-River-God
6. "Cute Boots" - Niveous
7. "While They Fade"- Jim of Seattle
8. "I Wish I Was So Sure" - Niveous
9. "Revenge of the Nerds" - Zinkline
10. "A Problem with Perspective" - Merisan

Now to listen to everyone elses.

Me too. I am really over this by now. Re-recording songs is nowhere near as much fun as recording new ones. A few more days and I should be able to put this bastard to bed and start getting sleep again

I'll bite. Roughly ordered the way I might do it on a real album:

1. Green Eleven
2. We Keep Them Alive
3. Fortune Cookie
4. City In Fog
5. Paper Thin [not submitted to SF]
6. Half A Million Nerds
7. Love Me A Little Bit More [not submitted to SF]
8. In The Tank
9. Dry Spell
10a. Back From Juvie
10b. Elegy From Industry [... or this one if I had no time for desuckification; also if I really made an album out of these songs. It's a slightly more positive note to end on.]
