AVATARS
So what's the deal on avatar etiquette anyway? I usually find an image I like and just link to it... then a friend pointed out that maybe this was n't the greatest thing. Like would it strain someone's bandwidth or something? My supposed 10 meg webspace still hasn't been assigned to me through my internet provider, else I'd just link to there... but I thought I'd ask the pool of minds here: Am I breaking some unwritten internet code?
..this would explain why my avatars disappear after a while though...

I make little copies of the pictures and put them on my web space. I didn't know there was any other way to do it.
But while on the topic of avatars, I decided a few weeks ago to start using my avatar as a pictorial representation of my most recent song.
Hence, my Les Anchois was accompanied by a portrait of Jacques Brel. He has now been replaced by Mr Fourex, an iconic Queensland image relevant to my Things to do in NY entry. (Obviously I am labouring here under the mistaken belief that anybody out there could really give a shit about my avatars - I've got to fill my time in at work somehow...)

It's courteous to host it on one's own.
Also, the rules state that avatars are sposeda be 80 pixels by 80 pixels, max. Though it isn't automatically enforced, people should abide by it anyway.

You know I'm gonna have to do that to you now....joshw wrote:Whenever I notice somebody doing that to my site, I set up an apache rewrite to serve them a different image. A very goatse-y image.
Ok, ya, this is what I've started to figure too. Now if my internet provider would just give me my damn space back this would all work out just fine.. though I totally dug that christian nudest avatar thing I had going on... I never even realized it was too many pixels by the way... kinda assumed in my ignorance that if it worked, it must be right... so... I think I have a friend that will "lend" me some avatar hosting until I work out my webspace issues... they've only taken like three weeks to respond...fuckers.
..please don't go suggesting various webhosting places by the way, I don't have a credit card so I'd much rather do it through the cable company whose bill I already pay...
gotta google these so called "free" avatars .... good bye superman....

In that case, I will not suggest that you try http://www.photobucket.comLeaf wrote:please don't go suggesting various webhosting places by the way, I don't have a credit card so I'd much rather do it through the cable company whose bill I already pay
I will just point out that it is totally free (you are never asked for credit card information) provided you give a working e-mail address.

On another note, the cable company gives 10 mg free, and for 20 they want 15 bucks a month. Top end is 300 mg for 80 bucks a month. I don't have any experience with getting webhosting, but that seems pretty expensive. So fuck it, I may have to go and get a credit card afterall!!
Grrr. Any thoughts on webspace costs would also be grand.
That is too expensive, by like a factor of ten. If I were you I'd use the money to buy a new camera instead; get one that doesn't take such blurry photos of songfighters.Leaf wrote:On another note, the cable company gives 10 mg free, and for 20 they want 15 bucks a month. Screw that! That's an awesome photo...taken by a truely talented L.A. photographer... of a man moving faster than ... uh... yeah, funny.
As soon as I posted this I get all this great info on webspace and prices.. that cable company is out of their freaking minds! Funny thing is, they give out 7 email addresses, and they each have 10 mg associated with them, so I can link em together for one super amazing 70 meg site for free!!! HAHAHAHA!!!! I HAVE THEM NOW!!
Thanks for all the tips and sarcasm.
EDIT: Oh for fuck's sakes, now I gotta work out "stealing your photo" karma??? shheesh.

Umm. No you don't. There is a distinct difference between email storage and web space (ftp).Leaf wrote:they give out 7 email addresses, and they each have 10 mg associated with them, so I can link em together for one super amazing 70 meg site for free!!! HAHAHAHA!!!! I HAVE THEM NOW!!

unfortunately, while you can technically "use" all of those 10mb per email address spaces, it's a real pain in the ass, 'cuz they are all seperate ftp accounts, so each 10MB storage has a different access. At least that's how it was with Rogers and me....Leaf wrote:

Plus, 70 MB isn't gonna house nearly enough of your pron.....
I use a couple of them for my page. It isn't bad. You just store different things on each site. site 1 = pictures, site 2 = html and scripts.. ect...
p.s. where do you find Pr0n on the internet?
