Complain about your schedule. Apparently people like that sort of thing.

Weekender: Friday Aug. 28 thru Sunday Aug. 30, 2009

Post by JonPorobil »

Today was the last day of training, and I just (finally!) got my schedule.

Tuesday through Thursday: 1pm - 10pm
Saturday: 10am - 7pm
Sunday and Monday off.

The bad news is that this schedule sucks. 1-10 is even worse than the schedule I had when I was a DNC canvasser! I don't mind working Saturdays (especially since that means getting Monday off), but wow.

The good news is that, because of the way the schedule change implements, I get a three-day weekend! The other good news is that I may become eligible for a schedule swap any day now, because the turnover at the company is high (both from firings and from promotions).

I also spoke today to a co-worker with whom I spent some time shadowing last week. He's been at the company about three months. They told me that in general, employees have to wait about nine months before trying out for other positions (and that exceptions are sometimes made as needed), but this coworker of mine just got promoted today. That's good news for me, as I had the highest exam grade in my training class. :)

I'm sure it's been asked before, but since things change (as does the lineup around here), it bears occasional redundancy...
Question of the Weekend: What's your work schedule like? Are you happy with it?

My schedule is something like this:

M-F: Get in any time before 10, go home when I've done enough damage for the day
S/U: Obsessively work on comics and music and catch up on TV and so on

Damn! Now I'm gonna have to buy an iPhone. Just so I can have this:

http://air-o-matic.com/

Pull My Finger does what you would expect it to do--it generates numerous flatulence sounds from your iPhone. When it was first released it produced about five unique sounds, but it has been re-released now with a total of 18 high quality sounds and cartoon characters per the vendors website. The sounds can be played randomly, in Chorus mode for a continuous loop and it even vibrates now to add to the realism.

QotWE: My schedule changes every week. But this next week's goes something like this (actually it goes exactly like this).
Sunday: 8 to 2
Monday: 8 to 4
Tuesday: 9 to 3
Wednesday: Off
Thursday: 8 to 4
Friday: 9 to 4
Saturday: Off

I get anywhere from 34-38 hours a week. They give me as many hours as they can without having to pay me like a full time worker or give any benefits.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style. :D

My work's flexible so I work whenever, however I'm in class MWF 8-9:50, TR 9:30-11 and 3:30-4:45.

So. Talking of classes?

One of my professors(and the adviser for my major[which has ~10 sophomores in, so we get to know him pretty well apparently]) is Mark Volman who was in The Turtles. Who wrote "Happy Together". Mad cool, no? He's a super super cool guy, and the class is fantastic. Oh my gosh. Why did no one tell me that university could be spectacular when you're not learning about super boring stuff? My classes are amazing. I'm taking one on the history of the recording industry and it's just... ah. So cool. So very cool.

You guys, college is awesome* :D

* Someone remind me of this fact when it's finals and I'm stressing out :P

I'm on vacation until Thursday. Then it's back to 9-6ish, this job having started in March, it's been a nice change being able to have a family life again.

qotd: I hate my work schedule. It's completely random. Sometimes I get "the call" at 5 in the morning, sometimes I get it at 6 pm. Sometimes it means an hour in town, sometimes it means a month in the bush.

JB, feel free to stop by my house at random times in the hopes you can take my shit ;)

My dad and step mom got robbed the other night. So you may have some explaining to do, John. If that's your real name...
