R.I.P. Jim Carroll
Geez, I just heard about this. Maybe more relevant to older folks, but plenty of people know of The Basketball Diaries, which I must've read five times in high school. Give it a read, disturbing and fascinating. Some good tunes, and great lyrics in the Patti Smith type vein, People Who Died and It's too Late are definitely classics.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Heard about it this morning from ujn on the chatroom.
I heard People Who Died on the radio in my yout and it blew my mind, compared to most other stuff that was being played at the time.
RIP Jim.

A local alternative station here played "People Who Died" in commemoration of his death. I'd never heard it before, but it really struck a chord with me. Plus, it felt really creepy, given the context.
