Myna - web-based audio recording/editing system

Post by roymond »

I'd like to be checking it out to see what this is about. Might be cool for creating scratch track and getting ideas down when on the road (read: at work) or for collaboration. But it required an intel box :(

It is completely awesome. I haven't tried recording with it yet, but considering this is a web app (free, for now) and it appears to be a full DAW (minus effects) I'm quite impressed. The sample song and sample audio to play around with is pretty good.

Yeah, holy crap. It looks impressive indeed. Your work is essentially public and others can build off it, though you retain copyright and they create derivatives. Anyway, certainly worth fooling around with. I wonder if the premium accounts get to protect their work in different ways.

I took a quick look at this yesterday and will explore it further today. Did anyone see if it had MIDI? That would be really helpful for me.

I don't see how midi could work, timing over the net is...not kind. But I don't know about virtual instruments, etc. and playing midi data.

Well, none of it is happening over the net. It's all in-browser I think, with some kind of latency compensation built-in for anything they have to stream because of memory limitations in the browser, right?

Isn't it a Flash app? I didn't think Flash had any support for working with your local MIDI hardware, unlike audio and video input. I could be wrong, though. Searching for "midi flash input" was not conclusive for me.

I didn't mean to interface with midi hardware, but to run softsynths and such.

I tried to upload some audio from our BSS jam last night. I started with the overhead track from our song. It uploaded, but I couldn't insert it into the audio editor. I think this is because Myna is made for audio clips and not audio files. So Myna reminds me of ACID, which was basically a way to organize loops. Cool, but not what I had hoped for...

I tried it and had the same issue as Ken. But I was able to add clips from their library. I thought maybe because it's a beta right now. But it could be the length of my files.

Myna will come in handy when I need extra voices from people that don't record or know anything about music. Just send them a clip, have them lay it on a track, then they can record their voice right off their laptop mic on to a track. The record feature works very well.

I was wondering. Being a web based daw, would I be able to lay a clip in track 1, then just send the link to with the clip already on the track, ready for someone to record on track 2? Or will they have to start from scratch on their end?

I think you are able to save and share entire projects.

huh? acid works just fine with full-length audio files. you just don't want to treat them as loops, but you can do loop, one-shot, or full-length (whatever they call that mode). acid is my main recording solution.

I haven't used ACID in a long time and whatever version I had years ago, my memory of it is as above. This is not to be confused with fact or current feature sets.

I finally got around to trying this out, and it wouldn't run. It says only Intel-based Macs are supported. So no love for those of us still in PowerPC-land.

I did not try it on Linux, but if it doesn't work on a PowerPC Mac, Linux seems even less likely to work.

I'm running Hardy Heron Ubuntu, and it worked for me.

Which, now that I think about it, is pretty amazing.

it's probably something like a big-endian/little-endian problem (didn't want to byte-swap the audio files?), meaning that linux would work fine if it was on an intel system since that's the same processor etc. as windows.

Did I mention that I'm running Linux on an Alpha?

Anyway, my audio interface is also unsupported on Linux, so it's not a big deal.

It does seem like this would be a neat way to do long-distance collabs.
