I think of it as a Tom Lerher ending, where he sticks one last clever rhyme just before the end. But it's older and more standard than that.
Hard to explain but this is what I'm talking about.
What do you call it?
What do you call that cheesy thing in the coda?

Hmmm....I don't know. In theory class, we would probably just call that an internal phrase extension. But it would be nice if it had a cooler name than that.Mostess wrote:I think of it as a Tom Lerher ending, where he sticks one last clever rhyme just before the end. I had a counterpoint teacher who liked to talk about "the subdominant gesture" that usually signaled the imminent end of a Bach piece. Doesn't really have anything to do with this, but you made me think of it.

Re: What do you call that cheesy thing in the coda?
I've got a non-Songfight song in the works called "Swallow You Whole." The last two lines of the chorus go:
The golden rule is get some gold
Or else they'll swallow you whole
But in the last chorus, I shake it up a bit, and change it to:
The golden rule is get some gold
Or else they'll swallow you
Husk and hollow you
Else they'll swallow you whole
Mostess, is that kind of what you're talking about? That "Husk and hollow you" part? I don't know what it's called either, but I use it often enough that I'd be interested in finding out, too.
Also, in that sound clip, you sounded a lot like Jim of Seattle. It amused me.

I don't know what it's called either. But the first thing that came to mind was Larry David's writing style for Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. At the very end of each show, there will always be one clever thing said or done that brings the whole show back around and gives a perfect funny conclusion. Kind of a "leave'um laughing" or Leave'um thinking" kind of thing.
I do it in my music on occasion. The last one that comes to mind is Shoelace Soup. I make the whole song full of sexual innuendos without actually saying anything naughty. Then my last line in the song is "and then we'll fuck". I like doing stuff like that. It makes me laugh thinking about parents listening to my happy little ditty with their kids, then their panicked faces and reaching for the volume knob, while mom is trying to cover their kids ears when I say something real inappropriate, lmao!
....it's the little things in life that make me happy.
