I assume it's piano. You're really embracing the Weird Al on this one. Polkas on '97. Anyway, this is catchy and fantastic!
Thanks Glenny! I wasn't aware there was a rule against this otherwise I never would have asked Jon. Yes he is playing the keys. I think he did a great job! Thanks again Jon.

I also recall the "rule" in past years being that you could not have a current einer As a guest, but it was not discussed.

I guess Jon must be pretty confident that (a) he is gonna stay in this round even if Chris beats him, or (b) Chris was gonna beat him either way.

I have been trying to find any evidence of secret hidden messages Jon may have planted in Chris' song.

I'd like to hear you explore some new vocal harmonies, I'm hearing the same harmonies maybe too much, but that's partially because I always keep your tracks and listen to them much more often than the usual fighter. I like the guitar tone this time!

Tell me about it. Had I known my lead guitar guest was going to have tech issues, I would have preferred Steve on the main bridge solo. I had this whole thing planned out with Steve on the intro solo, between verse bridge solo and a power outro where I drop the lead guitar down low. Then my lead guitar player was going to handle fills and the main bridge. After I knew my guitar guest couldn't come through and it was too late for Steve to do anything else, I had to stick my lead in. Also, tech issues with Steve's track made me have to do something that would make all the studio gurus here vom! I had to use an mp3 Steve sent me of his horn track with my original track that he used to play to. So it had the song low in the background. So I had to blow up the tracks and line them up on the beat PERFECTLY so they didn't sound all weird. Then I had to do everything I did on the rough track I sent Steve. I suppose I didn't have to tell anyone that. But I'm now laughing about it. But yesterday I was straight trippin', yo!

Finished song>intended goal

Thanks Glennny

edit: Regarding the above. I don't want to get into it here. But I do here > Help a brutha ooot, if you would. Thanks.

Too late for anyone to do anything about it, but check out this article I just read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_Oak ... ,_Texas%29

Specifically, that after an attempted poisoning of the tree in the 80s, and desperate attempts by the community to save the tree (including blank-check funding from Ross Perot) that prevented its death but caused it to lose 2/3 of its canopy, acorns grew on the tree for the first time again...in 1997.

Or (c) I care more about making good songs than I do about winning or following the rules. :)

I wasn't around when Nur Ein II happened, and thus never saw the conversation in question. When Chris asked me to contribute to his song, the first thing that came to my mind was the minor outburst that Frankie had on the subject last year, which led me to believe that even if controversy did arise, at least two of this year's five judges would be sympathetic to such a collaboration. And hey, Cogott's song came out really great! It was fun to work on! For a guy who doesn't know his music theory, he sure knows a lot of chords!

I was not trying to imply that any rules had been broken, it was not discussed this yearnso it was clearly fair game.

Presumably anyone can follow Ween, then? I remember playing selections (El Camino, in particular) from God/Satan/Ween on WZRD-FM back in '90 or '91 -- and Poop Ship Destroyer still cracks me up, as does the entirety of the 12 Country Greats album.

In fact, the "bring a guest" challenge from this round instantly made me think of Powder Blue, a song which apparently exists entirely to introduce the performers much like The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's The Intro and The Outro, but with more subtlety: "Bobby Ogden on the piano...[piano solo]...thanks, Bobby. Mister Charlie McCoy, harmonica...[harmonica solo]...ah, Charlie. Russ Hicks, steel guitar...[steel guitar solo] And ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to present...Muhammad Ali...[ludicrously long audio clip of Muhammad Ali boasting about his prowess after beating Sonny Liston, that keeps going even after the song ends]"

Having said that, my favorite Ween song of all time: http://slice.seriouseats.com/archives/2 ... lease.html

Yes it was.

I never got around to doing a song that round, because apparently I broke a tooth and was preparing to go to USA. But, it seems:
Caravan Ray wrote: I had even started work on a "song" - which basically featured a speech by Kevin Rudd, defending his backdown of an Emissions Trading Scheme, put to a drumbeat, and with me screaming abuse at him over the top. No really a "song" as such, more a form of personal therapy...
Heh! A year later I finally got there! Except this year, instead of being angry about a crap ETS, now even the crap ETS has been shelved entirely - and I got Wages to do my ranting for me. I have no idea what I did last year. Whatever it was, it has been long since wiped from my hard drive.

That's what I thought too.

I don't know if it was an outburst, Jon, but I hate rules that never end. Here's your challenge. Oh, and you also can't do that either. No, we didn't say you can't do that, but you should have known better. If you asked about it, then you can't do it. It just never ends.

But the biggest problem is that you have to keep your eyes on the boards the entire week in case the rule is clarified in some way that you didn't anticipate while you are writing the song. (I seem to remember one time when the title actually changed after it was posted.) I say just post the challenge and if you weren't specific enough when you posted it, too bad.

Time to quote Jack from "The Lord of the Flies" again:

"We'll have rules!" he cried excitedly. "Lots of rules! Then when
anyone breaks 'em-"
"Whee-oh!"
"Wacco!"
"Bong!"
"Doink!"

In a bit of a beatle mood, today Frankie?

But seriously, I agree. My frustration is when the rules change or get clarified without anyone telling me. If the rules are going to be "loose" so be it, but don't act like they are tight if you didn't say so. This is one reason I like to be up front about my biases, no gotchas. I used to grumble, but have let it go, still I totally relate to the einer's pain.
