Record Club

Post by Caravan Ray »

This is sort of interesting in a Songfighty sort of way:

Beck's Record Club:

Seems Beck and his mates have a combination of Album a Day and Coverfight they play - they pick an album and re-record it in a day

The Velvet Underground and Nico one is interesting. I am a big Beck fan - but I think Songfighters could do it better.

I can't help but wonder how Beck would fare if he entered a song fight. ;)

Assuming he entered under a pseudonym and didn't tell anyone who the song was actually by.... he'd probably get a mix of good and bad reviews, with even the negative reviews alluding to the fact that the song is well-put-together but "just not my thing." Some people would claim not to get it. It would probably win, or at least turn in a strong showing in the the top two or three.

Of course, if he entered it as "Beck," he'd win by a landslide and the Songfight servers would crash.

Yeah, I really like the idea and am glad they're doing this even if I'm not exactly in love with some of the output. But I'm a sucker for covers in general.

We actually did a big Velvet Underground and Nico cover thing over at Metafilter Music last summer, I don't even remember why it happened at this point but we ended up with multiple covers of each song on the album from a bunch of different mefite musicians. Checking the tag page for that, there were 38 different covers recorded that month. Ton of fun.

I did a noisy taking-some-arrangement-liberties cover of Femme Fatale that I'm pretty happy with (as well as a deeply stupid Walken-as-lounge-poet thing that I'm not exactly proud of but, heh).
