recording in mono?

Post by Koushirou »

i am recording videos of me playing acoustic songs using a webcam and windows movie maker. i'm trying to avoid using my webcam mic, and instead i'm trying to use an sm57 through my alesis multimix interface to record audio.

problem: the multimix has 8 tracks. the first two tracks are treated as the L and R tracks for a single stereo track. this is fine when i'm recording in Sonar or whatever because i can choose to record from just one of these tracks. no such option in moviemaker. when i've tried using the multimix, i only get audio on the L channel, obviously because the mic is plugged into track 1 but not track 2.

so, is there any driver setting or something somewhere that could possibly let me record ONLY track 1, even in moviemaker?

Don't know about your software / camera, but could you just use an XLR Y-cable to record to both tracks 1 and 2 at the same time? In my studio setup, I have a mic Y'd into channels 1 and 2 like that so that I can record onto odd or even numbered tracks...

Alternately, Movie Maker should have a "bin," which is the editing term for your pool of media files being drawn from to create the finished video. In that "bin" should be the video of you singing, which you should then be able to copy to the audio-2 (right) track. That way, the R and L are the same file. Insta-stereo. It's a little kludgy, but at least you'll have audio coming out of both speakers.

I've used WMM before; it's clunky as all get out, and I haven't found "elegant" solutions to most of the problems it creates. If you keep dragging things around from the bin, you should eventually get it how you want it.

Next time I boot to Windows, I'll try and draw up a quick tutorial for you.
