Unless.... you're a poser dork....you're not a poser dork 8legged.* , are you?
Damn, you do have a more irritating to type name than Abominominous though! Gotta create a good shortform...
See? I'm clogging the thread with absolute crap and no one has done a sinlg.llt.seef......
(symbolname): uhm... some of the vox is kinda out a tune... but not the whole time..
just a few noticable spots here and there... the song really isn't bad at all...
it's just not as solid as i'd hope it to be...
but the song really doesn't have any really solid spots... it seems like a lot of the
instruments wonder on and off beat the whole song tryin' to find eachother...
maybe work on that a lil'... like the guitar solo riff thing...
ants: really good for 10 seconds
baconmaster: i like the wanderin' guitar riff solo thing in the background...
but the song itself is kinda muddy and hard for me to get into...
not to say it's a really bad song or nothin'... it's just the production is really hard
to look past... there's probably a decent song under there somewhere
... (work on bein' a lil' more vocally solid... (should take my own advice on that))

i like the vocals for the chorus... but i think you should've done them
seperately from the verse track... cause the way you go into it...
isn't as solid as i'd like... but it... itself is done vocally well after
the start... maybe it's just my ears tryin' to readjust to the change...
all and all pretty good song... with some production problems...
better production and this probably would've been pretty good
maybe add some more riffs here and there for atmosphere
would've been cool... cool solo... deffinately mess around

maxthecat: wow... this intro didn't sound like a maxthecat thing... keeps goin'..
some of the sounds are really attracting... some of the vocs sound a lil' muddled

pipefist: wow... this is deffinately one of your best songs so far
you have incredible amount of range with your voice
you have a great voice... i think so far the only reason your songs

this... is really pretty amazing and a shockingly good surprise
(i'm not sure about the beatbox part... sounds kind of out of place)
could've done without that... besides that... really strong song
weldele: pretty cool... (is the piano real?)... it sounds like it...
but i guess it could just be a really good sample...
i dig the music... i think it was done really cool...

Quickie comments:
Keepers: The BeWells, Freddielove, Max the Cat and WreckdoM. WreckdoM definitely had the best approach to the title - the song didn't exactly appeal to me musically, but I felt compelled to keep it 'cause someday it's going to be... important.
Jack Shite, couldn't quite tell if you were aiming for a minor or major key. The lyric is competent, but it never surprised me, never made me go, "hey, that's clever..."
Onion Patrol, the lead guitar in the opening probably worked against you rather than for you... very beginnerish...
BeWells: consider an ABAB lyric structure instead of AABB... the "string of couplets" approach maybe draws too much attention to the rhymes at times - which works in a novelty sorta song that's going for "clever," but gets in the way of a more serious story line.
Lot of stuff in this fight that just didn't do anything for me... kudos to Max the Cat for making a complicated arrangement / style work so well.

TWG Reviews
Ants (Invisible)
I love these song sketches. I think I would love to hear more of this one, but then I think I almost prefer the wondering of where the song would end if it were finished then actually hearing it.
Andy Balham
I like the writing here but the arrangement and performance detract heavily from it. Nice chord progression through the verses, though the chorus seems a bit predictable.
Baconmaster
This is one of those songs that was more fun for the person who recorded it than it is for anyone listening, or at least I hope it was. Decent production, if a bit quiet.
The BeWells
This is nice. Wistfull, smartly written lyrics with an understated delivery. The way you come out of the bridge is outstanding. Both musically and lyrically, one of the best small moments I've heard in a while. I think John Lennon said words to the effect that the bridge is where you get around to saying what you really want to say in a song and this does it . The line "wondering if she's with me or merely dreams of what should be" is perfect. If I have one nit to pick it is that the electric guitar is sometimes intrusive, though I like it in the solo out of the bridge. Oh yeah and the production is great, didn't even notice it, which I think is a sign of a well put together song. Excellent.
Eight Legged Oedipus
Another good one. This is cool. I like the stutter stop beats and guitar samples. One problem. Hello! is someone singing in there, I can't hear you. Otherwise good song.
Hoosenbergler
This is awesome right from the start. The chorus is great with the nas, or are they las, no matter. The guitar fits in perfectly, and the electric piano line is great. This sounds like a Blur song that was never recorded reinterpreted by Cornelius as club anthem. In other words I love it. And the self referential ending, it just had to didn't it?
Jack Shite
Sounds like Jack is taking us down to the delta like John Fogherty, another San Francisco native. A well put together song, I would have prefered to hear it with more tension. Think Tom Waits, he would tear this one up. Overall, nice job.
LonBobby
The piano playing the single line slightly reminiscent of, is it Moonlight Sonata, with tabla is a nice juxt of position. Nice, the way the production opens up is class. Reminds a bit of Mono with the pulsating synth bass and looped drum beat. Great breakdown with the guitar. I will have to check if you posted the lyrics, though from what I can understand they are great. I also like the way they are delivered with machine-like deadpan. A lot of people complain about the over use of vocal effects, but here they are used to great effect. This is quickly becoming a favorite. You know, Lonbobby has been quietly making some great music here for a while, I think this the best one so far. Looking forward to more songs.

Were there any especially off beats in this one? I didn't think there were any, but I could be biased. I tried to fix most of the problems in this one, and they were largeley to do with the lyrics and the syllabels. Otherwise, with the exception of the scat, I was pretty happy with this one. And I thought we did a pretty good job on Wrath of God, too. But of course, the other ones have had some pretty glaring flaws, and it's mostly because of our tendency to do everything at the last minute, and I, for one, am pretty new to this sort of thing. Hell, before songfight, I hadn't written a song in 6 months, and before that it was about 2 years.i think so far the only reason your songs
haven't been goin' over so well... is because of the offbeats
and a lot of production problems
Anyway, thanks for the nice comments. Here's hoping I can only improve. I'm probably gonna take a couple weeks off, though. Spending too much with this lately.
Hey folks...been a long time. I think I'm going to submit tomorrow, so I thought I'd do some reviews. Doing these without reading previous reviews, so pardon any repetition.
Andy Balham
The drums are pretty cool. I like the little break around 1:15. Kinda sloppy overall. I like the guitar tone and the solo. Some good stuff here, but needs to be refined.
Ant (Invisible)
Good start. Wish it continued
Bacon Master
Not for me. I the lyrics could have been funny and a good concept if you were more suggestive rather than just stating it.
The BeWells
Very pretty. Excellent production values all around. Finding it a bit repetitive and wishing for something surprising. Cool e-bow guitar. Good overall.
Eight Legged Oedipus
This is cool and different. A good bit of distortion here. Overcompressed maybe? Enjoying this. You're doing a good job of bringing sounds in and out to keep it interesting. I like the singing and the vocal effects, but you could put a little more passion into it. Very good.
Freddielove
I like this a lot, but some tempo issues are bothering me. I think it's those guitar chords not quite staying on time. Or maybe it's everything...just not quite tight enough. Still, I really like the choice of instrumentation. I like your voice, but I'd like to hear some higher notes here and there. Like, maybe go up an octave at some point. I could almost love this if not for a few mentioned issues.
Hoosenbergler
This is weird and quite Zappa-esc. I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it or cringing. I think I'm crinjoying it. Yeah. Elves.
Jack Shite
This has a dark sound I like and good production values. I like the guitar playing. I'm wanting it to go somewhere though. This is too much of one color for me.
Lonbobby
This perks my ears up immediately. Looove that tabla with the sad piano. Sounds like something off the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Is that you singing, heavily processed, or a vocal simulator? It's pretty cool either way. And the guitar arpeggio is really nice and subtle. Ditto the triangle. You gots talent and well-defined voice. My only criticism is that the vocals are little weak-sounding. Maybe just compress them and bring them up in the mix a little? Real good.
Magnetbox
First of all, "Magnetbox" is a good name. I think there's a good song here, but I'm not so hot on the production. I'd like it to be faster, not so plodding, more variation in the drums, more variation in...well...everything. But, yeah, I do think there is definitely a good song in here.
Max the Cat
What is this reminding me of?...Art of Noise?...No...Yello! There's something very 80's electronic about this. I'm enjoying it. There's something about the vocals that's bothering me. Maybe they just need some reverb or something? Not sure. Not liking the talking part. I like the instrumental track.
Onion Patrol
Something very refreshing about hearing real drums from time to time. Wishing for bass and maybe some keys here -- this is sounding a bit thin. Still, liking it. Cool vocals which could be a hair louder in the mix. Good thrashy guitar tone. Pretty good.
Pipe Fist
Cool chopped instrumental track. Vocals definitely not doing it for me. I think you're better off keeping it simpler unless you can really pull of all the slides and falsetto and such.
PISTOLERO
Nice bass synth there. And pretty cool drums. I like all the analogy synth sounds. This isn't bad, but feel like the electronic-track-plus-soundbites thing is a bit played out. You would have to do something pretty special with it to catch my ear.
Prepubescent Canada
This made me laugh.
...that's "laughing?" Hmmm...Looks more like nerve damage. I miss Topato.
Song Fight Orchestra
Oooh. Scary. Woops. It's over. Keep going guys!
WreckdoM
This is melting my brain. Thanks.
-----
Oookay, well, listening again to my favorites...
Eight Legged Octopus -- Love it, but the distortion makes it an almost for me. Even if it's intentional, it's too much.
Hoosenbergler -- This is seriously the stadium rock of the elf world.
Lonbobby -- This is excellent all around, but it's the emotional quality that really makes it the vote winner for me.
Thanks everybody!

Song Fight Orchestra
Oooh. Scary. Woops. It's over. Keep going guys!
WreckdoM
This is melting my brain. Thanks.

Andy Belham: Something isn't quite right here. The sound quality is good. I want to say that I 'm liking this one, but I honestly can't. I like the tones... something about it reminds me of Julian Cope... but the disjointedness of everything is just too difficult to get into.
Ants Invisible: Songwriting. Not "bits" writing.
Baconmaster: Yes, yes I do. What's your point? ...oh! I thought you were singing "you have a penis". ..Hmmm. Upon "rewind" it appears you ARE commenting on my penis. This is unusual, as I do not believe we have ever met. Seriously, I was all set to like this one, because some of the musical elements are neat, but overall, this isn't.
The Bewells: Very nice intro. Great sound right off and so far everything is well played. This is not the kind of music I get into, that's just the way it is, however, this is well done. I'm in the process of cleaning up the studio, doing my tax preparations... and this is very nicely written, well played and well recorded music that fits into the background really well. The only thing is, I'm truly not the kind of guy that's going to bust this track out in the future, because there is nothing compelling about it. It's tender, it's good, that lead is sweet... why is it that the best tunes are the ones I stylistically am not attracted to I wonder? Well, criticism aside, this is a definite CONTENDER.
8LO: I like your style, sound and voice. If you ever get the urge to add another element to your sound, pm me… I’d love to drum or bass or something on a collab with you. This is a cool tune, very nice use of what I shall refer to as wacky elements. A CONTENDER.
Freddie Love: You are a songfighter that I haven’t heard much from, for what ever reason. Which is too bad, (as in I’ll have to check the archives for you) cause you do stuff that rocks my world. There is something rushed about some of the performance, but the mood, tone and writing is great. I like your voice too. I’m getting a whole “Girl for Ipanima” vibe …especially when you hit your bridge…in fact, I kinda figure that’s your inspiration trip here…I dig it. If it wasn’t for the rhythmic tension in places, you’d be a contender, as it is; you’re definitely in that company.
Hoosenbergler: Elements of what you do remind me of Future Boy. Your vibe and sound and …weirdness are great. So far, I’ve just loved your stuff. It’s silly, and grabs my ear. This song doesn’t beg for a vote, so I’m not inclined to label you a contender in my world, however I still think your stuff and your style is happening.
Jack Shite: I love your voice, especially when you’re singing this style of stuff. I have no idea why you didn’t pm me to drum on this….(hint hint) cause they are a little out of sorts. Now see, if I got my hands on this, I would have rocked out part way through… cause it sits in the same zone through out and never gives me a climax… not that I expect you to make me climax you savage, I meant as a listener… even though my love for your style and music is great, I can’t slap contender on this baby, cause it just doesn’t sound finished… it ‘s like a vehicle for your voice and the words, but the vehicle is a monorail train that only moves at one speed…yeah, you have tons of tunes that I dig, but this one sounds unfinished or something… apart from that, it was good music for the studio cleanup though…
LonBobby: Nice mix, and sounds. Seems to meander around, as a chill out vibe tune it ‘s cool, but it’s kinda the same vibe I’m getting off of Jack’s tune… good ideas and sounds, but a linear concept that ends up fading into the background. There are some really cool ideas here, and the overall mix is excellent. Seems to go to a very limited place though.
MagnetBox: Guitar is out of tune right out of the gate, which is too bad, because I liked the way the whole thing kicked in. I was getting ready to be rocked out… this tune suffers from mixing issues, as far as I’m concerned. Vocals too quiet, inconsistent dynamics. The song is ok. I like the melody line, that was cool. Hard to follow the lyrics cause they are so buried… it’s ok, but it needs some medical attention.
MAxtheCat: I love the intro… right off; I’m all totally ready to listen to this. It’s crazy. Nice bass tone. This doesn’t sound like the typical maxthecat tune, but I’m digging it inside and out. CONTENDER. Love the ending.
Onionpatrol: I like the guitar tone, but it’s all I can hear, as in way way way too loud. Nice groove and vibe, but the tune itself is not something that gets me all excited, and the mix just makes it tough to appreciate. It’s ok.
Pipefist: Interesting. I like the groove on this one… this tune lacks, (as always, in my opinion) bottom end. I like the energy in it, and the vocal performance is compelling, although that falsetto is risky, you JUST make it work. There are too many better works in this fight for me to label you a contender, but it’s good, and I may even listen to this one again, because I liked it. The scat part does nothing for me, mostly because I am so fed up with scat… sounds like you had fun doing it though, that’s good! Yeah, I liked this, cool.
Weldele: At first I thought it was a Wrekdom clone… I like the progression. I like creepy, heavy grooves. I really like this. Sometimes this type of thing doesn’t grab me, but this one does. The samples are not connotative of “wrong girl” to me however. I think what I liked about it the most was that it was fun to work too (cleaning studio and such, as previously mentioned). Ok.
Prepubescent Canada: Change your name you unpatriotic dweebs.
Songfightorchestra: Chick Corea’s in the house… reminds me of Dave Weckl’s first solo album when it started… nice JOS… that was cool… especially as it’s really the start of your wacky project… good start.
Wrekdom: Please oh please share your weed with me. Stop ripping off Jack’s singing style while you’re at it. Are you guys like cracking to the review pressure or something? It’s more like a song than ever…. Seriously, this one… well, it just wasn’t.
I think I'm voting 8LO...

Intriguing why so many people mis-read Balham. Any clue as to the origins of this mysterious Belham?Leaf wrote:Andy Belham

Yeah, the scat part definitely sucks. I'm gonna give it up for a while, I think. Tried two weeks in a row, and it just didn't work either time. Of course, I don't think I'll be entering songfight for a couple weeks after this. The scat part does nothing for me, mostly because I am so fed up with scat…

haha! Sorry man! Funny thing is, I actually wrote that bit in word so I could (shudder) spell check it and I added "Belham" to the list of excluded words!! ah well... I'll get it right next time... can't even blame that one on a lack of spell checker or whatever!!!Andy Balham wrote:Jordan wrote:Andy BelhamIntriguing why so many people mis-read Balham. Hey, welcome back! I was singing your praises to someone just the other day and bemoaning your lack of musical presence (here anyway.) Yay!Jordan wrote:Hey folks...been a long time. Hmm...sorry. I get a similar thing when I spell my last name (Yaruss) to people. I say "Y," they write "W." Waruss. Hmph.Andy Balham wrote:Jordan wrote:Andy BelhamIntriguing why so many people mis-read Balham. Any clue as to the origins of this mysterious Belham?Leaf wrote:Andy Belham

Thanks, Johnny. I did submit for Fell Out of the Sky, but about 15 minutes past the deadline. If it doesn't get accepted, I'll put it on Somesongs. Wouldn't be so bad -- I had about 5 minutes to mix, and would still like to add some harmonies and stuff.
