SSDs are awesome

Post by fluffy »

I just upgraded my music computer to an SSD (Crucial C300). The difference is immense. Logic starts up in about 5 seconds (down from 30-45). Even really complex projects load in about half a second (instead of taking 10 or so). Switching between projects is no longer painful. There are no glitches or dropouts during realtime playback. The "HD" usage indicator stays pegged at 0. The CPU meter shows a HUGE amount of active-preprocessing, because now it's able to prefetch as much audio data as it wants. I am no longer frightened of realtime bounces or recording a new track immediately after waking my system from sleep.

They're still a bit spendy, but it's under $2/GB now if you know where to look. I got a 256GB for $445 shipped.

This is the single largest speed improvement I've ever seen in a computer upgrade, ever. Orders of magnitude faster! We're back to the CPU being the bottleneck, which hasn't been the case in a long time.

*holds mic to fluffy's face* Are they offering them with such small storage to get the upgrade business in a year and so on? Why not start them at 1T? But I bet it's quiet. What's your opinion Mr fluffy?

Yeah, I really want to make the plunge, but they're still way expensive for me, and the amount of memory you get doesn't stack up. When they make a 500GB one for under $500, I'll do it. Or when I get a job that doubles my pay.

Yeah, I was trying to hold out until that price/size point but I was just getting too fed up with magnetic media. It was getting to the point that I was yelling and swearing at Logic pretty much every other minute. Obviously my "throw money at the problem" threshold is a bit more relaxed than for most people.

Oh also this thing is completely silent. I hadn't realized just how much noise was coming from my laptop's hard drive!

Hey, weren't we just talking about that with BLT?

I've got a potential salary jump coming up, so I might celebrate by buying myself a little sumthin'. I would still hang on to my spinners for the time being, though.

Perfect for studio computers. What about heat? Are the fan(s) running harder or the same?

The CPU fan seems to be the same or lower. Less hdd heat and the CPU has to do less to compensate for bad hdd performance.

Nice. Now if they can make a power supply generate less heat.
