Guilty Pleasures

Post by Adam! »

What music do you secretly enjoy, but keep hidden under your bed in case someone ever found out?

I’ll kick this off with a doozy: I thoroughly enjoy the new Papa Roach single Getting Away With Murder. Just the song. The lyrics are garbage, obviously, but I totally love the tone of the bass, the mechanical-sounding drums, and the whole faux-industrial feel. Also every time I hear the verse I think I’m listening to Baby One More Time.

Which is another song I love.

Now you:

(Hmm… I thought we already had one of these threads)

Platinum Blonde.

I know, I know... I can't help it. One of those bands that happened at the right time in my impressionable music taste-developing years... I can't not like them.

I hate Corn really bad (and I refuse to misspell on purpose). But that song "God hates Me" I dig. Sometimes, while crusing I'll fip to the butt-rock station and find a gem. Mostly it's Creed, Nicklebag and other assorted crap--but once in a while...

Don't feel bad Puce. I dig that tune too.

My current musical guilty pleasure is "Bonjour Kitty" by Mr. Bicycle and the Magic 5.

Check out the brilliant lyrics, yet I love this song:

(sung)
My cat likes to get high
Use Heroin
Use Heroin!
(spoken)
Vox 1: Andrew, I've been thinking about your problem
Vox 2: Yeah, I've been thinking about it too
Vox 1: What about...the intervention
Vox 2: Yeah, the intervention. That's, uh,definitely an option.
Vox 1: Andrew, this is serious
Vox 2: More serious than you think
Vox 1: Even so, we need to get help... for the kittens
Vox 2: Yes, for the kittens
(sung)
*random screaming*
My cat likes to speak french
*undecipherable french*
(spoken)
Vox 1: Andrew, it's been two weeks and your cats- they are still speaking french and taking heroin. What are you going to do?
Vox 2: Well, my father always said- if you're old enough to use heroin, you're old enough to get a punch in the throat.
Vox 1: Andrew, the kittens need your love
Vox 2: Well, punishment is a form of love so I guess they do.
(sung)
*random screaming*

Musicals for me too. But I'm happy and proud of that. (Especially when in a car park and belting out Thoroughly Modern Millie. And then turn around and my World Lit teacher is there)

And... well... The Spice Girls. I saw then live when I was teeny tiny, and I still love them. Blame it on my age, but I still get a kick out of singing SG and dancing about.

I always like things like Spice Girls and Britteny on first listen, then societal awareness kicks in, and I denounce them as frauds and lackeys.

Dammit!!! See? It's these new bands that think misspelling is good. My communication is going to revert to a cave man style of gestures and grunts. "Ha ahhhh unnghg!!"

This was the song where I realized that you didn't have to be a good singer to make music.

Last night I was watching music videos and a Good Charlotte song came on. I've never heard anything by Good Charlotte (except the Undergrads theme), and I know they are universally derided, so my expectations were laying on the floor; Suprisingly, the song seemed totally good. I don't remember the name of it (the video involved people dressed up as food) but it was catchy dance music with a string section and a fun falsetto chorus.

That new Taking Back Sunday song. The one where it feels like drums are pretty much carrying the song.

I feel a little guilty about liking the Streets. Not too much though.

Oh and Jamie Cullum. I feel the same way about him as I do the Beatles, they're both so freaking accessible. Except I really do love the Beatles and don't feel guilty for liking them.

That Linking Park remix album Reanimation. Everyone thinks it's total shit, but I refuse to call it bad.

Manilow.

Although I'm growing less embarassed about this, as I run into more people who admit to liking his stuff.

yah...man oh man, I did buy the N-Sync album, POP I think it's called. Iwanted to see what a disgusting amount of money could do with music production...and I ended enjoying much of it. The production is a bit mind-blowing.

shameful, I know...but Timberlake is pretty talented dude.

Frankie Laine. And Al Jolson (I am also quite partial to dressing up in black-face, though that's probably frowed upon nowdays in other parts of the world)

Every once in a while I get a hankering for Queen's the Game. Almost every track is killer, but dated at this point. And aside from the potential that he could be convicted as a pedophile, I sometimes really get into Michael Jackson (Off The Wall or whatever it was called). And I have a soft spot for Foreigner 4. At one point I knew every lyric on the record.
