I'm going to see Wicked at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in downtown ATL tomorrow!
Which is context for the question of the day: what musicals have you seen performed live?
My list is rather short:
- Cats
- Les Misérables
- Mary Poppins
Bonus question: which one(s) would you like to see but haven't yet?
I'd love to see Chicago done live.

Re: September 16, 2011
Hmm... saw "The Rothchilds" and "Cats," I think. Maybe "1776." Saw "Pirates of Penzance" with James Belushi and Jo Ann Worley and had front row seats, which for me was cool. I'm not much of a Broadway musical fan - spent 9 days in New York City many years ago and didn't go see any shows. Saw a local production of "Sunday in the Park With George" here in Phoenix and video'd high-school adaptations of "Into the Woods" and "Singin' in the Rain."
Would probably enjoy a live "Tommy" if Roger Daltrey was singing, but no interest at all in one of those big all star disasters...

in highschool i was in the band for productions of "pippin" and several other musicals, and had a role/ in the chorus for "pullman car hiawatha"... ive seen the nutcracker a lot (little sister was a ballerina for ever) ... other than that, i honestly hate musical theater. it bores me, the songs (imo) are cheesy, and annoying. even the musical numbers in family guy annoy me. im a jerk.

Re: September 16, 2011
I've seen a lot of musicals live, because I knew this one kid in middle school whose parents had season tickets to the local university theatre and they specifically had one extra for the kid to bring a friend along. And I guess looking back I was his only friend, or at least the only one interested in seeing musicals. I don't think I really appreciated the full weight of it at the time.
So anyway I've lost track of all the musicals I've seen and I can only think of a few offhand. Most of these were not from the arrangement above:
- Hello Dolly
- Little Shop of Horrors
- Wicked
- The Sound of Music
- Die Walkure (opera is, after all, the original musical theatre)

Sat on stage for HAIR at the Old Vic in London and got to dance with the cast at the end. Kept my clothes on.

The Wiz
West Side Story
Lion King
Aida
Little Shop of Horrors
A couple others, but I'm not really into musicals. Watching how they put together the production, however, is often pretty awesome.

Re: September 16, 2011
I saw Beatlemania at the Colonial in Boston in '76 or so, Chorus Line on Broadway a couple years later, Grease in Boston around the same time. LOVED Beatlemania. Last year, a friend of mine's husband had his songs turned into a musical. He goes by the name Melvern Taylor and would be great here on SF! if he operated this way. Anyway, the show was well done and he and the band stuffed themselves into the corner of the stage at the small rep theater and played just the music as the cast sang. Neat.
I wouldn't mind seeing Wicked, I got a kick out of the book a few years back.

How could I forget Jesus Christ Superstar? One of my favorite musical anything. Saw it at the Wang Center (cue BLT) in Boston maybe 10 years ago with the late great Carl Anderson as Judas, and earlier this year in a very excellent local production.
Bringin' the stink since 2006.

Re: September 16, 2011
Quick update: Wicked is AWESOME. One of my biggest peevs with most musicals is that the numbers are just place holders: they rarely advance the plot or tell something that isn't blinding obvious about a character. Not so for the vast majority of Wicked's songs. And the big Act I closer, "Defying Gravity" is stupendous:

- Rumpelstiltskin. Best play I ever saw. My son played the part of Rumpel in 5th grade. And he nailed it!

Musicals suck sh*t. End of.
Seen far too many, thanks to job mainly.
Two honourable exceptions (both film versions, thank you very much) -
West Side Story. (walked back up the aisle to instrumental version of "Somewhere", the gayest song ever written, bar "my heart belongs to daddy")
Cabaret.
The rest belong in Hell.

Really? No mention of Avenue Q yet? I thought even people who dislike musicals liked Avenue Q.

Worst ever was the Wynnum Musical Society's production of "HMS Pinafore". The one with me in it. Never doing that again (OK....I did audition for Spamalot last year - pricks didn't want me - their problem)
