And the votes from the Balham jury are as follows…
Ants (Invisible)
Works quite well as a gentle intro. You’re alphabetical position suits you well.
Boltoph
A little melancholic for my tastes, but pretty well done. Your voice reminds me of Badly Drawn Boy – and that’s a good thing. Actually, it’s growing on me as I listen.
Caravan Ray
Ah Mr Ray! Are you trying to be the new Rolf Harris here? The poor beardie isn’t even dead yet. It’s a pretty inoffensive and mildly amusing ditty. Bonus points for getting barramundi into a song.
Cashmere Cat
Interesting opening. The overall feel is reminding me of half a Kinks song.
Casio Choir
God bless Bontempi.
The Cat Boys
Oh dear another conceptual piece. What was it about the title? Please a song next…
Chingaling
Damn! It’s a ‘singing’ Speak and Spell. C’mon Deshead save me…
Deshead
Was the double meaning on the ‘still’ at the end of the chorus deliberate (like the ‘behind’ in ‘Big Bottom’?). Kudos if that was the case. Whilst I think the build up in instrumentation is good, I prefer the more spare early parts. They have a more wintery feel.
Johnny Cashpoint
Good to have you back Mr.$, where have you been. I like the background sounds and the double-tracked vocals. I’m enjoying this well-restrained performance – it has a nice brooding quality to it. The whole arrangement builds well all the way to end.
Johnny Cochran's Lo-Fi Blues Experience
C’mon lads, let’s try next time shall we. Only the eternal beauty of the blues is saving any slivers of your bacon here.
Kamakura
Good rhyme of promised and honest. This would be a make a good end of set song with the lighters in the air. Nice work.
Layman
Something to cleanse the palette I guess
Masters of Grip (Us)
Thanks to Mr Windsor for the folk-rock stylings. I don’t know how I ended up writing about mountaineering, but that’s the interesting part of the journey of writing a song – the unknown. Thanks also to Sarah for the backing on the chorus.
Null Dynamo
Genre bias kicking in here. This is a little too ponderous for my tastes. If this is a pastiche then fair enough, but I would rather hear you do something funnier or something straight. Too long too.
Pileus
This style is hard to pull off well and this comes pretty close. There’s enough going on in the background to keep me interested and your flow isn’t bad at all. It gets a little repetitive by the end, but good work.
Revel Yth
A nice change of pace here and some lyrics for me to read. The combination of the beats and the voice remind me somewhat of Bjork’s oeuvre (in a good way). A pleasant listen, but not a strong enough song for the vote (the lyrics are too vague for my tastes).
Silk Bikini Mussolini
Did I miss a meeting or was there an optional challenge to enter songs like this?
The Sleazy D Collective
This is much better. I’m digging the laid-back drums and bass. The cheesy organ’s fitting in and the lyrical delivery sits well. I’m getting a smoky bar at around half three in the morning. Good barfly music.
You Pour a Pearl
No lyrics = no vote. Nice snow print sound though.
Thanks to all the people who entered songs and in the end the vote goes to… Johnny Cashpoint!

Thanks for the kind words folks.

hi there
well, i got some good feedback here.
but yeah, i gotta advise not to vote for me, when there's a ton of better stuff on this one
no kidding, but seriously, my setup is far from professional, 20 buck mic and an open source editing program... no excuses though.Johnny Cochran's Lo fi - i think I should change to lo fi too, that way no one will gripe about my lack of recording skills.

Glad to be of service. Make sure you get the doctor to check if you've started growing a third leg.Caravan Ray wrote:Andy Balham wrote: It is dangerously Rolf-esque, isn't it. I hadn't really noticed - thanks for the warning - I'll see my doctor first thing in the morning.

BTW, CR, this is what I meant when I was talking about the 'Over-Australianness' of the song, only Balham summed it up more succinctly and accurately than I ever could. I was waiting for the didgeridoo solo to kick in! Still a good song though. Lovely guitar tone.
And Masters of Grip, it occured to me last night when I was fretting over that choice of flute patch, and bemoaning the lack of kick-ass guitar, did you accept the optional challenge on this fight? If you did then damn, that was well done. Still not my favourite MoG song, but as a 'deep cut' it makes a lot more sense ....
Just some 'at last new headphones that don't kill my brain' observations ...

As we close in on a album's worth of material we felt needed some respite from the incessant rocking. Be assured, the 12th and final album track will be rock - we're thinking single here.j$ wrote:And Masters of Grip did you accept the optional challenge on this fight?

i've never done this, and dont know if i'm good @ reviews, but i'm gonna give it a shot. here goez (1 - 10)
Ants (Invisible) Really happy, and kinda spacey. i enjoy the overall feel of this toon, just wish there was more of it 7
Boltoph I'm not sure how i feel about this, it does have kind of a lounge feel to it, and i can dig that, and any toon you can get mentioning of ninja's into cant be bad. 6
Caravan Ray the whole steady rhythm / chord progression thing doesnt apeal to me, but i do like the lyrics. I would appreciate this more in my car then infront of my pc. 6
Cashmere Cat i can dig this, but didnt think it was all that long. 5
Casio Choir I love this song more then running water. sounds like it could have been inspired by three hole punch tho. still very happy and very diggable, like driveways full of snow. 9
The Cat Boys hmm. its not working for me.. i mean i can hear it, but you know... 2
Chingaling Ok Computer goes A Capella, hard to catch the rhythm, but tottally interesting. 4
Deshead First thing i noticed was killer mixing skills, rock on, second was technical and emotional conveyance. i broke a shovel on this track. 9
Johnny Cashpoint man, a little dramatic, i would remember the day it snowed too after all that. choirr backings are great when done right, dig it, 7
Johnny Cochran's Lo-Fi Blues Experience this song made my head hurt at first, but picked up at about 30 seconds into it. 4
Kamakura to quiet man, i wish i could hear the piano more with the vocals. 5
Layman ack. 2
Masters of Grip groovy man, like in my tune, the level mixing could be worked on (i didnt really hear the backing vocals the first time) 6
Null Dynamo \m/ (>.<) \m/ rock on, not into the cradel of filth vocals, love the drums/guitar tracks. 8
Pileus holycrap it sounds like my toon.. i so need to work on my vocals.. but since its only my 4th track i've ever sang/flowed(or attempted to flow) i'll be nice to myself.
Revel Yth you had me untill the drums started. i love the tonal escapes of this toonage. great vocal harmonies, perfect length. good work Yth, 9
Silk Bikini Mussolini after a that synth thing kicked in, i had to stop. 2
The Sleazy D Collective awe yea, groovin bass, love the organ too, this has all the ingredients for pimpcake, had this track been mastered/eq'd better i would listen to it in my car. another shovel broken. 9/9.5
You Pour a Pearl hmm to to bad but not great, not to big on the bell synths.. 6
all in all i realized that people remember alot of things when it snows. it was tough for me to decide between ants and sleazy d for my vote, but the D gets my V, damn happy bass gets me every time...

They would have been much more prominent if it wasn't for the fact they were recorded with Steve's crappy mic (can anyone point Steve at a decent cheapish vocal mic please?).Pileus wrote: Masters of Grip the level mixing could be worked on (i didnt really hear the backing vocals the first time)

review time... go figure
ant: this is really pretty cool sounding... at first when the vocals come in... kinda off...
but quickly go into tune... so it's still cool... i'm curious as to where
this could've went... but as it is... just sounds like a sample of a song
boltoph: like the piano sound... this deffinately has that side b sound goin' on...
which is cool... cause i'm digging this... it has a really cool feel to it...
this'll deffinately go on my tops... you really do have a good voice... really nice
kind of reminds me of counting crows for some reason
caravan ray: this is actually pretty entertaining... and the lyrics flow really well
and i think that's awesome... what i don't like is it's really muddy... it needs
something to kind of even that out a bit... because this is a really catchy sort of song
maybe eq would help that some... really has a catchy feel just needs mixing help
cashmere cat: i'm not really feeling this at all... i can tell the b side feel...
but it just sort of reminds me of everything else you do...
basically it sounds like your normal songs... with low quality...
casio choir: haha... this is like a novelty sort of thing... which is entertaining
but i just can't get myself to be able to say serious things of it...
hahaha... entertaining for sure
catboys: i don't really like how any of this is said... it has that.. trying to flow feel
that just doesn't fly very well... and it gets pretty annoying fast... and
the chorus is awful...
chingaling: ok... interesting...
deshead: this is awesome... of course i don't think i have yet to be disappointed
by one of your songs... but i don't think it fits the side b thing... but it's really
still awesome... nothing i know to say that would be constructive...
just amazing... and i dig it...
johnnycashpoint: i dig the guitar... not really huge on the lyrics... they're cool
but at some points it just sounds a bit awkward... but vocally
this is probably one of my fave vocal songs of yours... pretty cool...
johnnycochranetc.: rough rough guitar... really rough... vocals..
ehhhh... interesting... work on like... tuning... and uhm... stuff...
some cool riffs... just really really rough overall... take out some
of that horrid distortion... or work on gettin' it to sound better
kamakura: nice mellow piano... i can't really understand a lot of what
you're singing... but your voice sounds nice...
wished the piano was up a bit more... but not too much...
pretty decent... not sure about the 'woosh beat thing'... cool sound
i just don't think it really works with the song...
layman: can't think of nothing to say...
masters of grip: like the overall sound... some of the vocals sound just a bit
off... sound nice... just kinda not in perfect timing... but close....
some stronger background vox would be cool for a few parts... dig the weird whistle sound
that comes in around 1:40... i like the chorus or bridge or whatever that is...
(oh really dig the empty part where the music sort of cuts out around 2:30... really nice
feel to that)... kinda helped with the length of the song... cause it kinda drags
i think it's only minor technical problems that cause the dragging... because the overall
idea is really awesome... just would love to hear it be perfectly executed cause it's pretty cool
nulldynamo: sort of has a re-load sound to it... the vocals could be brought up some... or music
brought down just a tad one... but interesting sound...
i wished the crowl kinda vox... were more of a muffled scream... and not a sick dying
sort of thing... still sounds cool... just think it could've sounded better...
i expected this to be really bad with the intro... but honestly this is pretty good...
the drums are really awesome... it would've been nice for a kick ass solo or something
(but i do like the odd sound that comes in around 3:30... maybe brought up a bit... in the mix
would've been nice)... but i would'v loved to had heard a solo... cause it was the perfect
kinda song for one... maybe try to work one in... as it is... still pretty entertaining
good job
pileus: maybe not exactly my thing... but honestly this is one of the better sounding ones
of this kinda style that i've heard come through here... some of the lyrics sound kinda
cheesy... but it's still interesting... it has some obvious minor things goin' on
that i can't quite put my fingers on... maybe it's cause your vox sound a bit muddy...
but i can't promise that... haha...
not as bad as i thought it was gonna be by how you talked... all and all...
was surprised... keep it up man...
revelyth: you really have an awesome voice... it's soo... dream like...
i like the drums... but they sound kinda manufactured...
and think they could've been brought down in the mix some or something...
cause they kinda take away from the music... a bit...
music quiet... drums were just kinda distracting
i do like how they kinda cool down around 1:30...
really amazing... besides some minor problems with the drums...
this is overall pretty awesome (could've had a better ending)
silkbikini: interesting... kinda painful at parts... somethings would've just been better without
and the vocals sound like you have a volume control on 'em... sounds kinda rough...
and some of the tracks in this... don't match up... with the music...
it's kinda like 2 songs playing at once... and it's not got a good thing goin' on...
let loose vocally... and uhm... try to be more particular on what you put together...
and maybe add more dif. sounds... needs a lot of work
sleazydcollective: the bassline is pretty cool... the rap it's ok... but some of the lyrics
are borderline not fitting well... not sure if it's delivery of it...
or what... overall i have nothing i know i can say contructively about this...
not really my thing... has some interesting music elements goin'on though... well produced
you pour a pearl: really dig vibes... sooo i'm cool with this... it's not really so much a song
and i think it's good that it was short... since it was just a little bit of stuff...
but all and all... (probably enjoyed it cause i liked the progression...)...
pretty cool...

Yes, I see - but when it comes to Australian country music - there is really no such thing as over-Australian. Some of the stuff that gets played on country radio is cringeingly jingoistic and cliche ridden. Here is a snippet from True Blue, one of the biggest hits for John Williamson, one of our most 'respected' country artistes:j$ wrote:BTW, CR, this is what I meant when I was talking about the 'Over-Australianness' of the song, only Balham summed it up more succinctly and accurately than I ever could. I was waiting for the didgeridoo solo to kick in!

True Blue
Is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad
Is it a Cockatoo
Is it standing by your mate
When he's in a fight
Or just Vegemite
True Blue
If Mr Williamson can make a million bucks with that tripe - hell, I'm gonna give it go to.
Anyway, I've had 'Rolf' comparisons before, and I would like to try to move away from those. Mind you, I do consider a 'Rolf' comparison a compliment - it, to me implies a certain amount of wit in the lyric, which is what I am aiming for. Better Rolf than John bloody Williamson.
dear songfight: when it snowed, eric and asya decided to write some reviews for you!
ants (invisible) - the music is pretty cool mostly, but i'm wondering if maybe this is comprised totally of garageband loops? i don't know if garageband has this capability but you might want to look into transposing some of them so they're all in the same key.
i'm guessing this took about an hour to write. the music is real cute, sounds like something you'd hear in a frosty (the snowman) cartoon... but didn't take real talent to write.
boltoph - these lyrics are pretty stupid as far as i can tell. sorry. the piano sounds pretty good but you may want to play with the mic placement a bit to see if you can get a little more treble out of it...
i love your voice. the piano is pretty but the words are kinda lacking. with a bit more work it could be a really nice song. it needs something though, some kind of drum or something.
caravan ray - the guitar and singing are both really good, I like the lyrics they tell a good story... but too much drum, really good song otherwise.
lyrics are cute, just the drum is a little loud for me and it over powers your voice.
cashmere cat - okok the old-time radio eq thing is really cute when done right. but dude you really overdid it. the freakout thing at the end doesn't quite work for me.
umm you just took everything I dont like about some beatles song and rolled it into a song, I really dont like the ending.
casio choir - you really got the cuteness thing down but it sounds like you're trying too hard sometimes. also you're kind of infringing on carol cleveland and future boy territory. but be that as it may, at least the lyrics got me chuckling a bit.
okay the doggie part is cute... how come I feel like I am trapped in a video game and I want to kill you first though?
the cat boys - nonono don't start a rap group. seriously. please. do yourselves a favour. because if you do i'll just make fun of you. incessantly. like i'm doing right now. oh dear god no i'm too lazy to make fun of you i'm just turning your song off. like now.
how often do you wax your chest... cause i dont imagine this gets you very much tang so whats your side job... cause i am guessing eminem isnt going to be calling you on stage anytime soon
chingaling - (i left the room about two seconds after this started. i hate hate hate novox the robot and at least he has well-programmed pitches and melodies and stuff. death to TTS!!!)
Were you the guy who did fitter happier? seriously really do you know radiohead?
deshead - dear mister head your vocals are pretty fantastic here; i can definitely see why you get so many josh woodward comparisons (i mean that in a good way). this was sounding pretty great until the electronic drums came in and almost ruined it for me. i still liked it pretty much i guess.
the lyrics are a little awkward, I mean the chorus is nice though, but something doesnt really flow, but otherwise a very well produced song.
johnny cashpoint - as i've said recently, your vocals keep getting better... i like the music here (especially the sound of the bass) but the vocals blend into the background too much and the guitar sticks out a little too sharply in places. terrific drums, though... have you come up with a new technique -- or just found a new sample source? either way, it sounded good.
the visual is kind of grotesque, but the vocals are nice but they blend too much just like eric said.
johnny cochran's lo-fi blues experience - i don't know why people seem to equate "lo-fi" with "bad". they are two distinctly separate things. this is both. the guitar playing is pretty decent but it all sounds like crap.
negative points already for the intro. seriously, again this week somebody needs to grow some balls.
kamakura - nice stuff, like the doubled vocals a lot. but i wish i could understand more of the lyrics, the vocals are too bassy and reverby (ok not too reverby really but i get that impression anyway) and it's tough to understand. this song is begging for a 34-piece orchestra to jump in on the chorus or the second verse or something. it starts out great, but then really needs something added to it.
totally getting a visual of a drag queen here. does she tuck? luckily when it snows, there's shrinkage 8)
layman - the intro is a bit too new order, the lyrics a bit too indistinct, the song a bit too ... lacking. and short.
i can't hear a damn word you said. not a damn word. oh wait, i heard "fuck".
masters of grip - i like the flute, as fake as it sounds. even more than that i like the really tremoloey organ-sounding thing that comes in on occasion. decent job all around.
the flute is pretty but I am thinking jethro tull when I hear this, and that's just a disturbing visual. all perverted old men with runny noses. yuck. anyway, all and all not bad though really.
null dynamo - can i get a "fuck yeah" from the congregation please. thanks. you got my vote.
(threw her pen across the room in disgust when the second vocal part came in.) sorry but i don't like shit like that, it makes me think of creepy people molesting children and eating their hearts and stuff. the song's pretty interesting besides that; musically it's awesome. just get rid of the creepy child molester dude.
pileus - oh wait, nevermind YOU got my vote. my vote for "most annoying intro"
didn't understand a damn word you said. had to stop it about halfway through.
revel yth - you sing real prettily. i wish you could sing prettily AND loudly.
what is with people covering up the nice voice that they have... are you shy? you sing really nicely but you need to suck it up and turn the background music down a little, all and all this is a pretty song though something I would even listen to if I needed a track to slit my wrists to.
silk bikini mussolini - amazingly this is the first incidence of sleigh bells i've heard. i figured this title would have had them coming out in droves. everything after the sleighbell part didn't sound very good to my ears. especially the part where you were singing, i'm afraid.
do you touch yourself and think of your otter pop? yeah I dont like this thanks moving on now..

Thanks for your reviews (or is that your (pl) review? heh.)tviyh & asya wrote:johnny cashpoint - production ... drums
I didn't produce this song. I recorded the guitar, keyboard, bass and vocals then mailed them off to a lovely person who mixed it for me, added the colour, and the drums. They do sound great don't they? I gave an indication on the demo track where I wanted them to come in, roughly, but other than that, they're nought to do with me.
So all the cool background noises, fullness of the guitar tracks, general overall impression is down to my producer (who I believe wishes to remain anonymous, and I will honour that). I think he did a fantastic job. I don't quite hear where the vocals start blending (I know the song well enough by now that I can hear everything, see?). Is it a general thing or are there specific points?
For anyone who is interested, you can hear my original demo (with a first take vocal, no backing vocals but with a dubious Pixies drum sample towards the end) here

Thanks. Unfortunately the Orchestra were on holiday. Plans are afoot for re-recording with the London Philarmonic at some point in my wildest fantasy. Speaking of which:tviyh wrote: kamakura - nice stuff, like the doubled vocals a lot. but i wish i could understand more of the lyrics, the vocals are too bassy and reverby (ok not too reverby really but i get that impression anyway) and it's tough to understand. this song is begging for a 34-piece orchestra to jump in on the chorus or the second verse or something. it starts out great, but then really needs something added to it.
It seems I should be buying some new clothes. Any advice as to dress style, or perhaps a twin set? I have large feet so do bear this in mind whilst you dream. Btw thermal underwear helps with the shrinkage problem, so I'm told.tviyh wrote: totally getting a visual of a drag queen here. does she tuck? luckily when it snows, there's shrinkage 8)

I Just though I'd summarise The Grip's reviews so far:
"Dig the weird whistle sound, as fake as it sounds. I am thinking Jethro Tull when I hear this, and that's just a disturbing visual all perverted old men with runny noses. I'd like to hear guitars going insane all over this song's metaphorical ass. Groovy and somewhat comical in its psychadelia."

"Some may say I couldn't sing, but none may say I didn't sing" - Florence Foster Jenkins
Thanks for the reviews. Any way to elicit something more specific from Asya about the awkwardness? A specific phrase or word that made her think that?tviyh wrote:i still liked it pretty much i guess.

I agree. I'm changing my name to Desh.Poor June wrote:for somereason i always say 'desh-head' ... think it sounds cool that way
