I voted by mail a few weeks ago, because California is cool like that.

Thanks for the reminder! We had received our early ballots a while back and spaced on getting those in on time, and probably would have spaced on today as well. Only two things to vote for this time and they had to do separate ballots for each one - a mayoral runoff election and a school budget thing. For those who had early ballots and just hadn't sent them in, they had a box there to put those in, didn't have to do a fresh ballot even - tho' there wasn't anyone there to vote when I stopped by a few minutes ago, and the five volunteers at the polling place acted like they were thrilled to have anyone come in.

You all have local government elections on the same day across the country? That is weird. And vote for school committees? I have often heard that you seem to vote for public servants like sheriffs etc. How does that work?

In other news - we just got a new puppy.
A poodle.
Named Genevieve.
If anyone sniggers I'll kick them in the nuts.

Poodles can be just as tough and cool as other dogs. And she got her first taste of human flesh last night when she bit my ankle. Though the phrase "Kill Genevieve" doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

No, didn't vote. Evidently we have no local elections this year. So nothing to do, ho hum.

Standard poodles can be very scary the first time you discover they exist and they're that freakin' big :-)

"The monster, which the locals call Frunobulax - apparently a very large poodle dog..."

- Frank Zappa, "Cheepnis"

What we were voting for today was some sort of a budget increase or override for the local school district. There's some sort of law that if the school district wants more money, the voters (taxpayers) have to approve it. Usually, it passes no problem, though a couple such bills have been voted down here recently. Arizona is 51st in the nation in school funding (behind Washington D.C. but still big supporters of education compared to Puerto Rico). Some people here don't want that to change...

Keeping local elections in lock-step with national elections cuts down on paperwork and confusion and such for when there's a national election as well.

I've never understood the whole "elect a sheriff" thing, either.

There were no local elections about which I could make an informed decision this year, so I abstained. Next year, though. Hoo boy.

It looks brown to me - but it is apparently "apricot"

That seems like a bizarre thing to ask the public to vote on. Are education bugetory issues popular water-cooler conversations topics amongst the general Arizonan public?

We only ever vote for representatives. Not directly on issues. Except in the case of a referendum to change the Constitution - but these are rare and rarely pass.

Ha! One of me and my sister's oldest shared memories is when she got bit by Jay the Giant Poodle when we were very young. Frunobulax is a better, and favorite, name of mine. Good luck with her, Ray. What happened to that handsome giant dog you had before?

Jon Eric: Yeah, 2012 oughta be a pip! The local election started, like, two weeks ago. The national one started in, like, 2009!

The Chief is still going. His breed (Maremma Sheepdog) normally only lives to about 10. He will be 13 next month. He has various tumors and arthritis but still happy, very handsome and loves a daily walk. Vet says he is in good health and no pain. Loving having a new puppy to look after. We are just hoping he stays healthy for a whilelonger to show Genevieve the ropes.
