I'm not a pretty singer and I live by the above theory. I'd like to add "own it" to catchy melody. Mainly because one person's catchy melody is another person's bore fest. So I say own it on the delivery. Believe in what you sing with all of your passion that makes us do this in the first place, our love for creating music. Own it when you're on the mic and people will listen. A unique voice with passion is beautiful in it's own way.PiGPEN wrote:Sing a catchy melody and no one will GAF what your voice sounds like.

My two cents, don't care if someone sings too well or not, I enjoy the feelings and emotions in their voices. When I am intrested, i hear every word, then ask my friends (did you hear that, that was sum good shit). and they say what? They dont listen like i do. I get into lyrics more than the voice.

I think that people, by and large, have difficulty conceptualizing what they want. I'm hearing a lot of statements tantamount to: "It doesn't matter if the singer is any good (meaning on-key), as long as they're emoting and singing a catchy melody." I therefore present you with this:
That guy found a pretty catchy melody, and he sure looks like he's getting into it.

That's very insensitive, Jon! Just because people are fat or swing both ways sexually, is no reason to stereotype their ability to form concepts of what they want.Generic wrote:I think that people, by and large, have difficulty conceptualizing what they want.
...sure, it's true, otherwise they wouldn't be in their particular predicament. But insensitive none the less.

Re: Occupies the Place of a Review Thread (Occupy reviews)
Voice is the #1 thing that makes me hit 'next'.
Not generally because someone is out of tune. Most people are not that far out and even if they are, pitch is relatively easy to learn. There are a few exceptions like the one posted above but they *are* exceptions.
Mostly because, to be honest, if I don't LIKE the sound of someone, I'm not gonna make it through the song. It's one of those things that's intensely personal. The best example I have is the guy who used to sing in my band. Lovely man with a big voice who sang in tune and we got on musically like a house on fire. I just hated his voice. I stuck with it for years but I could never make myself like it. If I'd heard it on the radio I would have switched channels.
Another example: the Hold Steady. Love the band, hate the singer.
Another example: Jeff Tweedy. I don't care what he sings, I like it.
It's weird and it's not fair. But there it is.
I once had a blind date with someone who I met through a personal ad (long before the internet). She wrote me an AWESOME letter. We had an AWESOME phone call. I was so excited. So there I am waiting where we had arranged, and she crosses the road towards me and in that moment I discover that you can pretty much tell whether you are going to hit it off with someone THAT way in about 3/4 of a second. We had a really awkward date and it was never spoken of again.
Voices are like that.
I will say this: I am much more interested in what someone's voice says about who they are than about the technical quality of their singing. Get in the ballpark of the note and we'll talk.

I'm not super familiar with the source material but it does sound like he's hitting the notes (close enough) and i imagine with backing music and without a video of him dancing it would be even better.Generic wrote:That guy found a pretty catchy melody, and he sure looks like he's getting into it.
You're a bit superficial for thinking this guy is bad actually.

See Jon, you owe Hillbilly 1 dollar via paypal for upsetting him. Sure, he added a smiley face. But he can't help it that he is fat and so desperate that he'll fuck anyone that offers. I bet he conceptualizes just fine.hillbilly wrote:fat and swing both ways , upset me
Now that I think about it, I'm upset too and deserve 1 dollar. Check your inbox, paypal info included.

...and just because that guy in your vid was "trying" to sing a "good" (which I don't think is good) melody, but butchering it into a horrible melody, does not fit into the "good melody" theory. So I'm afraid your myth is busted. So this upsets me. You have my paypal info. Good day, sir.
......I said good day, sir!
edit: oh, and you owe me 2 bux.
Re: Occupies the Place of a Review Thread (Occupy reviews)
Yeah i know William Hung...he's the guy who auditioned for American Idol, was laughed out by the judges like so many others but then went on to actually be popular. I think that's gotta count for something. It's framed as people making fun of him en masse but you know damn well there are people who like him for serious.sportswriters wrote:You're a bit superficial for thinking this guy is bad actually.
Do you really not know who that is?
What i dont know is the material he's singing. BLT says he butchered it but sounds alright to me....he may not be singing the song right but he's on a scale...if you don't know what the melody is supposed to be like me then it sounds fine.

Re: Occupies the Place of a Review Thread (Occupy reviews)
to actually be popular
He was popular in the same way a freak show is popular. I have nothing against the guy at all -- I love his love -- but he was a novelty act who was laughed at and not with, for the most part. I found it kind of revolting. I hope he made some money out of it but I do not think he is a great role model for your argument.

I am just saying that using WH as your example is not going to win you many converts to your point of view.
Most people here, I'm guessing, do not aspire to be William Hung.

Re: Occupies the Place of a Review Thread (Occupy reviews)
And if you look below the controversy section which is full of bullshit views from people taking shit too seriously you'll find that his debut album reached number 1 on the US Indie charts and sold over 194,000 copies.
Think about that for a second...that's 194k+ people who were willing to shell out money to own a full album worth of songs from him. You're probably just jelly that you can't even get that many people to download your music for free.
And while i know jackshit about William Hung's musical output i do know there are artists i truthfully enjoy even though other people consider them joke-acts. For example Taco and Jasper from OFWGKTA are not even considered rappers by a large majority of OFWGKTA-fans even though they've been featured on multiple songs... for me they're my favorite rappers in the whole group because they're hilarious and i value humor in rap music very highly. I don't feel as strongly about humor in other forms of music but plenty of people do.... it's the sole reason Weird Al Yankovic is still in the music industry.
