McCartney Half Time Show

Post by Dan-O from Five-O »

Once again Paul proves why he's the best entertainer alive. That show was friggin' awesome. I can't wait to see him live again. Your thoughts everyone?

watching live performances on tv does nothing for me. "hey jude" seemed to perk up a bit, but up until that i felt kind of meh about the whole thing. in my opinion, superbowl halftime shows should be more like the opening ceremony of the olympics, with a big spectacle and a cast of bazillions, rather than revolving around one major-label performer with an album out. i dunno if Sir Paul has an album out, but the whole thing so far has felt a little desperate on the commerce side, especiallyl with that PA announcement after "America the Beautiful" about the Ray Charles albums you can buy. That was pretty f-in' disgusting.

I thought it was a great performance, his voice was really kickin', which surprised me. What I thought was shameful was the use of Sunday, Bloody Sunday (U2) for a Superbowl promo spot right after...I'd hate to think U2 ok'd that, but they must have for it to be used. My my, how far they've come....there was a time they would NEVER have permitted that.

Sorry for going off topic a bit...

It was fun. First two songs were prettycrappy, but "Live And Let Die" was awesome, just 'cause that' fun to sing. Then "Hey Jude" was fun. Mum randomly got a glow stick. I don't know where she got it though... Either way, we waved it about and sung and such. It wasn't really too interesting this year. And at least he didn't get naked :D Yay!

It was pretty good, which is surprising for a televised event. Certainly leaps and bounds better than last year's boredom.

I actually have come to like watching live performances on TV. Don't get me wrong, it never will have the same "feel" as being there. There's something intangible about a live performance, in honor of the Super Bore I'll call it the electricity of the audience. TV definitely doesn't convey that. But with rising ticket prices, the hassle of getting to and from a concert, and the risk of entering traffic with those who may indulge to much in spirits and otherwise, watching concerts at home on a wide screen Hi-Def in surround sound for 10 to 15 bucks is pretty appealing. Especially when you can stop the DVD or Tivo to hit the restroom anytime you want and not miss a thing.

I did think Paul was in great voice tonight, and actually I liked the version of "Drive my car" he did, although "Live and Let Die" made it for me. Great pyrotechnics. White Snake must be so jealous, if only they hadn't had that roof.

Also wondering what the folks that got Eagles Championship Tattoos are gonna do now...

I thought it was the best Superbowl halftime show I've seen, but more for what it wasn't than what it was.

some people at our party got excited when he took his one shirt off. i think they were joking but you never know.
i think the show was good. i've never been into the huge production aspects of the halftime show, so this one was more understated and had more to do with the music than anything else. and it's funny to think of saying that, because it was still a pretty big production.
i agree that it took to "lald" for the thing to really pick up.

I like halftime shows that are like a cavalcade of stars esploding all over the screen at breakneck speed, but having Paul McCartney involved kind of puts the kabosh on that sort of spectacle. That kind of show lends itself better to flashy acts that are high on name recognition and low on talent. You let someone like Paul only sing 1/2 a chorus of two songs, and it would be a waste.

Those first two songs were weird choices. "Drive My Car" is such a weird song, and "Get Back" is just a bit too low key. I think he picked that one because it has like one bass note for the entire song. I liked the show, but I probably would have liked it more if it was "I Saw Her Standing There", "Obladi Oblada", "Live and Let Die", "Hey Jude".

His band was good. I really liked the drummer.

From the two seconds I saw on Fox News it seemed okay. I might try to watch a replay or something now that I know he did Drive My Car.

I saw Paul the first tour he officially revived the Beatles songs and he was great, but Linda REALLY sucked (in fact she held most everything back). Now that the grave has cooled, I am curious as to how the show was yesterday. But not that curious that I would suffer through a football game, or even bother to program my Tivo. Glad to hear he impressed.

I thought he was excellent. I mean, his voice is just amazing. Live and Let Die is such an overrated song and Hey Jude is so predictable. So, in contrast to my brother-in-law, I will say I really enjoyed Drive My Car, which was a nice surprise, but I could live without Get Back, which Paul seems to like more than almost anyone I know. But Erik, you are right--Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da would have been fun. JBB, you are too fucking jaded man if you couldn't enjoy that performance.

I didn't see it. I rushed in the house and turned on the TV to see "3rd quarter, 14:49 remaining". Damn!!!!!

I'm really glad to hear so many comments about his voice. After the horrible Driving Rain album, I thought his voice was over forever. I mourned it. Maybe that was just a bad voice episode or something.

I will say that he sounded good. I listened from the other room while I read a book. So I will admit I didn't give myself the whole "live" experience. It sounded solid but uninspiring, except for "Hey Jude". From the other room. While reading a book.

Ob-la-di is one of my favorite Beatles tunes, so that would have been neat to hear.
